AND THE GIFT GOES ON

I. GOD GAVE THE SON- John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

A) The Reason for the Gift- God’s Love

B) The Results of the Gift- Jesus Came to Earth to Die

II. THE SON GAVE THE SPIRIT- John 14: 16-17 I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

A) Jesus dwelt among us

B) The Spirit will dwell IN us

III. THE SPIRIT GIVES THE CHURCH- I Cor 12:7-11 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues; but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

A) The Body is One but with many parts

B) The Difference is God Given

IV. THE CHURCH GIVES THE GOSPEL- Matt 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

A) We win some

B) We teach them to live and win others

V. THE GOSPEL GIVES LIFE- Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Eph 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast.

A) Saved by God

B) We now can worship the God who gave His Son!

CHRISTMAS DREAMS IN MATTHEW

Many people dream of a “white Christmas” or “sugar plums dancing around their head” at Christmas but the Bible shows several dreams that made a difference at Christmas.

Five times God uses Dreams in Matthew to give people directions. Normally in the Bible God gives directions to Kings via Dreams [Pharaoh in Gen 41, Nebuchadnezzar in Dan 2, Solomon, David, …] and uses Angels to direct “common” people. Matthew is about Jesus as King so dreams are used but it is also about God becoming Man so the dream contains a spokesman from God.

1) A Dream helped overcomes Dread: But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 1:20).

2) A Dream gave Divine Direction: And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way (Matthew 2:12).

3) A Dream warned of Imminent Danger: And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him (Matthew 2:13).

4) A Dream instructs when to Depart: But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life (Matthew 2:19-20).

5) A Dream reveals a Destination: But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee (Matthew 2:22).

The fear from 4 Angels appearances gave instructions at Christmas:

1. Zacharias (Luke 1) Fear demanded proof and 9 months of silence followed

2. Mary (Luke 1) Fear prompted declared faith

3. Joseph (Matt 1) Fear led to obedience

4. Shepherds (Luke 2) Fear stimulated to observe and testify

A life guideline is to “Have a Dream, Tell that Dream, and Do that Dream”.

  1. What is God leading you to Do?
  2. Who is God leading you to Avoid?
  3. What is God leading you to Believe?
  4. Where is God leading you to Be?

God has a plan for YOUR life but you must learn to listen to HOW He speaks to you and then OBEY what He tells you to do. It may not always make “sense” but it will always be the best option for your life.

CHRISTMAS MEANS:

He became poor that we might become rich (II Cor 8:9, Jam 2:5)

He was born that we might be born again (Jn 1:14, 3:2,7)

He became a servant that we might become sons (Phil 2:7; Gal 4:6‑7)

He had no home that we might have a home in heaven (Matt 8:20; Jn 14:2)

He was hungry that we might be fed (Matt 4:2; Jn 6:50)

He was thirsty that we might be satisfied (Jn 19:26)

He was stripped that we might be clothed (Matt 27:28; Gal 3:27)

He was forsaken that we might not be forsaken (Matt 27:28; 28:20)

He was sad that we might become glad (Is 53:3; Phil 4:4)

He was bound that we might go free (Matt 27:2; Jn 8:32‑36)

He was made sin that we might be made righteous (I Cor 5:21)

He died that we might live (Jn 5:24‑25)

He came down that we might be caught up (I Thess 4:16‑17).

He descended that we might ascend (John 6:38, 14:3)

CHRIST’S CHRISTMAS GIFTS

Doctors tell us that from 30% to 60% of their patients get better just as quickly with a “Placebo” (Sugar colored water or sugar pills that the patient thinks is real medicine) as with real medicine!!! Let’s change the illustration a moment and see how this relates to Christmas. {Give Paula empty gift box and then give her ring in plain box}. Life sometimes does that to us; We think that the brightly wrapped box is the one we want but when we open it we find it all Box and no Blessing!! Let’s look at Christ’s Gift to us on that first Christmas and see what He actually gave (Even though it was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger).

CHRIST GAVE US:

I. HIS RICHES‑ II Cor 8:9 for ye know the grace our our Lord Jesus Christ, that, thought he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor. EXAMPLE‑ Aristotle Onassis was once a household word in our country. He owned houses in half a dozen cities, a tropical island all his own, an elegant art collection, the world’s most lavish yacht (The “Christina”; a 325 foot rebuilt Canadian frigate complete with bathroom lined in marble with gold faucets.), and he was even able to “Buy” the love of a former president’s wife‑ Jacqueline Kennedy. It seemed that Aristotle Onassis had it all‑‑‑until in 1973 his 24 year old son died in a plane crash. Suddenly he became an “Old man” with no concern for life or riches; in 2 years’ time his riches were cut in half and he died a sad, tired old man.

Christ knew that Riches are not what men need (Example of Rich young ruler asked to sell all and come follow Him) so on that first Christmas He gave up His riches that we might find true riches. IS CHRISTMAS SIMPLY GIFTS (riches) TO YOU???

II. HIS REPUTATION‑ Phil 2:7 made himself of no reputation, and took upon himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.

Christ not only gave up His Riches but He also gave up the “Comfort” which came with it‑ “The Word became Flesh and dwelt among men”. EXAMPLE‑George Lucas is a Hollywood director (Which is not a good recommendation for him!!). He produced one successful film called “American Graffiti” and he had a dream. He wanted to produce a modern science fiction movie‑‑ but no one believed it would work. He didn’t have a good enough reputation to generate the money needed to produce the film. Finally 20th Century Fox told him they would give him only $10 million to produce the film. He worked and scrapped and finally was able to release the film flat broke‑ Since then “Star Wars” and it’s 2 sequels have grossed over $750 million dollars!!! Christ gave up His Royalty and Reputation to come to earth among men who disbelieved Him, mocked Him, and finally killed Him. But He did this so that He could deal with our:

A) INFIRMITIES‑ Heb 4:15‑16 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities…Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

B) TEMPTATION‑ Heb 2:18 for in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRFICE FOR SOMEONE ELSE THIS CHRISTMAS???

III. HIS RIGHTS‑ Luke 22:27 I am among you as one that serves Mark 10:45 For even the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many

IV. OUR REDEMPTION‑ Matt 1:21 and she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus (Saviour): for he shall save his people from their sins.

Rom 6:23 the wages of sin is death; but the gift of god is eternal life thru Christ Jesus our Lord.

Man has always tried to accept “Placebos” instead of God’s Way. Cain thought “The best he had” was better than the sacrifice God demanded and thru the years men have put bright packages and sparkling trees in the place of the Babe of Bethlehem and wonder why they feel so empty and sad after Christmas. EXAMPLE‑ A great Viking king decided to build a boat so big and so strong until he would rule the world. He ordered the best craftsmen to build it from the strongest materials and equip it with the most weapons ever on a boat. The entire countryside came to see this marvel the day it was to be launched. Swiftly it slid down the ramp into the sea‑‑‑ and just as swiftly slid beneath the waters!!! The kings had given the boat everything but the ability to float!!!

When Your “Boat” is launched will it take you to Heaven or sink you into Hell?? Christ came so that you might have abundant life and eternal life. Won’t you accept His gift today??

COMMON SENSE CHRISTMAS

Here are some simple common sense guidelines to help you enjoy the Christmas season.

GIFT GIVING:

1. Wrap your gift in Love. That first Christmas gift was given because “God so loved the World and He gave” (Jn 3:16). Your gift will mean more to you and to the one receiving it if Love goes with it. (No matter who the gift is for you ought to be able to send Love with it for the Bible commands us to Love our family, our neighbors, and even our enemies!!. In fact, it might be a good time to “reach out” to that enemy. The Bible says to do good to them that despitefully use you.)

2. Pray for guidance in the selection of your gift. One of the most frustrating parts of Christmas shopping is trying to buy something for someone when you have absolutely no idea what they need or want. Pray for God’s guidance in the selection of the Gift and its use (You wouldn’t want to give someone something that would cause them to sin!). James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

3. Give the Gift of your Presence. I surveyed my elderly shut‑in people several years ago about what their needs were. The answer in every case was not for financial and physical help (even though many had needs in these areas) but for someone to visit and show concern. On that first Christmas the Shepherds did not bring gifts; they brought themselves. Paul told the Corinthians to first give themselves and then give their gift (II Cor 8:5). No matter how expensive the gift it can never replace the personal touch. Don’t just give people the money you spent on the gift; give them yourself with the gift.

YOUR ATTITUDE.

Remember that the real reason for Christmas is Easter. Jesus did not come to earth to put a “Band-Aid” on the world’s problems. He came to give men the greatest gift possible‑ eternal life, free from sin’s bondage and wages (death). He came to suffer and die that “whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting live.” If you’ll remember this instead of only thinking about the things that inconvenience you then you’ll find opportunities to share the real gift of Christmas with someone this year.

Let the Joy and Thanks of this season flood your life as you repeat this verse over and over during these next days. THANKS BE UNTO GOD, FOR HIS UNSPEAKABLE GIFT (II Cor 9:15)

CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDELINES:

1) Do not let the PRIDE of your GIFT dictate the PRICE of your Gift. Do not spend money you do not have to give someone something they do not need in order to impress someone who will not be impressed.

2) Give as you are ABLE: Do not allow January’s DEBT to destroy December’s JOY.

3) Never Forget the Gift is the Symbol of the Savior: THANKS BE UNTO GOD, FOR HIS UNSPEAKABLE GIFT (II Cor 9:15)

DIRECTIONS TO THE SAVIOR

As you go thru life you will need directions for Life. Thank God He has given us The Word to Believe, actions that back it up, and a Heavenly announcement with a confirming sign.

I. God’s DECLARATION‑ JN 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God

II. God’s DEMONSTRATION‑ Jn 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (And we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The Shepherds directions to the Savior:

I. THE DECLARATION‑ As they were doing their daily duties they received directions from Angels

II. THE DEMONSTRATION‑ They were told what sign to look for in order to see God at work: babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger

The Wise Men‑

I. THE DECLARATION‑ Able to recognize that a Star was sent to guide them. Are you listening to where God is leading?

II. THE DEMONSTRATION‑ The Word from the Priest to Confirm God’s Star guidance. Make sure your plans do not violate God’s Principles in His Word.

Christmas is a time when God declared and demonstrated how to find Jesus. Is He declaring something to YOU today???

ENJOY THE SEASON

It’s that time of year again.

Christmas is just ahead.

And, already I’ve heard folks comment

On how, this season, they dread.

It’s too busy a season.

Too much work to do.

Too much planning and preparing.

And entirely too expensive, too.

Too many parties and get‑togethers.

Too many activities to remember.

There’s something happening all the time.

Just not enough days in December.

Too much cooking and dirty dishes.

Too many delicious foods in sight.

Too much eating and stuffing,

Just to face a New Years diet.

Too much shopping in crowded stores.

Too many gifts to buy.

Too many gifts to box and wrap.

Too many bows to tie.

These are a few of the comments,

Of this season, I often hear.

How could one speak such words

About this time of year?

For, it’s not just another season.

Not just another holiday.

‘Tis the giving of salvation.

This is our Savior’s birthday!

It’s a time for great rejoicing.

A time for spreading love.

For, we’re celebrating the birth of Christ

The Son of God from above.

It’s a time for smiles and hope.

A time for gladness and cheer.

A time for fellowship and fun.

A time for loved ones near.

A time to excitedly perform the tasks

Which this season brings.

A time to rush about our duties,

While, our heart, so calmly, sings.

It’s a time to share with others,

And give with thankful heart.

For, as God has graciously blessed you,

To others, you should impart.

It’s a time for accepting comfort

As our fears and worries decrease;

For, we can feel a complete peace,

Thru Jesus Christ, our Prince of Peace.

So, don’t be burdened by the season.

Don’t dread the tasks of each day.

Just enjoy the celebrating,

‘Tis our Savior’s birthday!’

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

GIFTS AND CHRISTMAS

When you ask the kids about Christmas they normally will answer- PRESENTS

When you ask parents the thing they dread the most about Christmas it will normally be – PRESENTS

Let us look at some of the reason Gifts are associated with Christmas:

The Wise Men (How Many) brought 3 gifts – (Mat 2:11) And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Even today we are to bring our gifts to God- (Luke 21:1‑2) And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.

Gifts God Give us because of Christmas

1) ETERNAL LIFE: (Rom 6:23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(John 3:16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

2) The HOLY SPIRIT- (Acts 2:38) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

To try to do the work of God without the power of God is like trying to empty the ocean with a pitchfork. You will work hard and accomplish nothing.

3) A PLACE IN THE BODY- (1 Cor 12:7‑9) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. {8} For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; {9} To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

4) SPIRITUAL LEADERS- (Eph 4:8‑12) Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. {11} And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; {12} For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

What are we to do with our Gifts:

A) ACCEPT IT

B) USE IT- (2 Tim 1:6) Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

C) PERSIST IN IT- (Rom 11:29) For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

GOD MANIFESTED

The Apostle John gave four reasons why the Son of God, Jesus Christ, became a man and was manifested in the flesh. This is the reason for the season.

I. TO REVEAL HOW GOD WOULD LIVE LIFE– I Jn 1:1-4 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the word of life; (for the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the father, and was manifested unto us;) that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the father, and with his son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

II. TO PAY THE DEBT OF SIN– I Jn 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

III. TO DESTROY THE WORKS OF SATAN– I Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

IV. TO REVEAL GOD’S LOVE– I Jn 4:9 In this was manifested the love of god toward us, because that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live through him.

As the world celebrates the Birth of the Babe of Bethlehem let us not get so wrapped up in the PARTY until we miss the PEACE, the PARDON, and the PERSON of Jesus. Accept God’s Gift and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS.

HEAVENLY ANNOUNCEMENTS

The coming Christmas was a time for God to give unusual Heavenly Announcements to many people in many circumstances. What is God trying to tell you this Christmas?

1. To Zacharias about his son’s (John the Baptist) Ministry‑ Luke 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the lord. What is God trying to tell you about someone whom He has entrusted to your care?

2. To Mary about her child’s birth, ministry, and divinity‑ Luke 1:31, 35 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. And the angel answered and said unto her, the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the son of god. Who will make a world changing difference because of you?

3. To Joseph about his marriage and the marvel of Mary’s child‑ Matt 1:20‑21 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. How will God’s announcement impact your life?

4. To the Shepherds about a Savior and signs‑ Luke 2:10‑12 And the angel said unto them, fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. What will you receive this Christmas which will give you guidance about the good you are to do?

5. To the Wise Men from heavenly observation‑ Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, where is he that is born king of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. Will you do what you need to do in order to follow the directions God has given you?

6. To Simeon about a glorious vision before his death‑ LUK 2:25‑32 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the holy ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the holy ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the lord’s Christ. And he came by the spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed god, and said, lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. What marvel does God want you to experience before you leave this life?

James 01:17 GOD’S PERFECT GIFTS

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning (James 1:17). What are some unusual gifts you have received during your life time? We all know about God’s “John 3:16 Gift” but here are some gifts from God we do not normally think about at this time of year.

1. Comfortable Physical Life Gifts:

1. Confident Care- Ps 127:2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so he giveth his beloved sleep. You can trust God!

2. Peaceful Rest- Matt 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Secure Safety and blessed belief that our labor is not in vain in the Lord!

3. A Good Life- I Tim 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. Ability to enjoy the “simple things” in the experience of family and friends.

a) Providential Provision: Leviticus 26:3-4 If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. [God even feeds the birds and clothes the flowers!]

b) Wisdom to deal with life’s situations- Jam 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be give him.

c) Health and Goals: Is 42:5 Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth; and that which cometh out to it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein; (God Holds Breath in Hand- Dan 5)

2. Productive Spiritual Life:

1) Salvation- Ep 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works lest any man should boast

2) Spiritual Power for life and service: If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? (Luke 11:13). Jn 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. (Satisfaction)

3) A Place of Service in God’s Family: Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal (1 Cor 12:4-7).

4) Eternal Life- Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Jn 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. Not just FROM sin but FOR Heaven.

Gifts from Christ:

  1. A Present Comforter- And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you (John 14:16-18).
  2. A Continual Peace- Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27). Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me (John 14:1).
  3. A Future Mansion-In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you (John 14:2).

John 01:1-4 GOD BECOMES MAN

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men (John 1:1-4).

Christmas is about God becoming a man. It is about the Son of God coming to earth to live among men; and eventually die for men. That makes Christmas more important than family togetherness, fabulous trees, or fictitious tales of fat men and flying reindeer.

Christmas means God became a Man:

  1. Christmas means the eternal God who has no beginning or end- who is from everlasting to everlasting; was Born.
  2. He who came to earth seeking a pure clean bride was born to her who was found with child before she was married. [4 ways to be born: Without man or woman- Adam / With man, without woman- Eve / With man and woman- everyone / Without man, with woman- Jesus]
  3. He who was all powerful yielded himself into the total helplessness of a baby.
  4. He who arranges for all food to exist became totally dependent on others to feed him.
  5. He who is light was announced at night to lowly shepherds as they watched their flocks.
  6. He who is now building mansions in Heaven to provide a place for His followers was born in a town that did not have a single room for him.

CHRISTMAS MEANS:

He descended that we might ascend (John 6:38, 14:3)

He became poor that we might become rich (II Cor 8:9, Jam 2:5)

He was born that we might be born again (Jn 1:14, 3:2, 7)

The Son became a servant that we might become sons (Phil 2:7; Gal 4:6 7)

He left His home in order for us to have a home in heaven

The story is told about a great Viking king who decided to build a boat so big and so strong until he would rule the world. He ordered the best craftsmen to build it from the strongest materials and equip it with the most weapons ever on a boat. The entire countryside came to see this marvel on the day it was to be launched. Swiftly it slid down the ramp into the sea and just as swiftly slid beneath the waters! The king had given the boat everything except the ability to float! Christmas is about God realizing our need and giving us the ability to walk on water!

Christmas means God not only CARES BUT HE CONVERTS:

    1. Christmas means the Son of God became a man in order for man to become a son of God (As many as received him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name John 1:12).
    2. Christmas is about God becoming a man and revealing the way to God, the truth about God, and the life God wants us to live (John 14:6-7).
      1. To show the Glory of God- And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
      2. To manifest the invisible God- No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him (John 1:18).

A little Girl was drawing on the beach when a man came by. “What are you drawing?” he asked. “A picture of God.” she replied. “But no one knows what God looks like.” the man said. The Girl replied, “Wait 5 more minutes and you will!” Our “Five Minute” wait is over. Christ is born; and we can be born again! God has a marvelous gift for you this Christmas day; will you accept it???

John 03:16 GIFTS

Give according to your ability, not according to your bank account- (Acts 3:6) Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

Give realizing THE GIVER gets the Greatest Blessing- (Acts 20:35) remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

THE POWER OF A GIFT:

A) To Blind Judgement- (Exo 23:8) And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.

B) To Corrupt Character- (Prov 15:27) He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live. (Eccl 7:7) Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

C) To Establish Relationships- (Prov 17:8) A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth. (Prov 21:14) A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.

THE PRECIOUSNESS OF GIFTS- (Mark 9:41) For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

THE PROBLEM WITH GIFTS- (Mat 15:5-6) But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

(Mat 5:23-24) Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

THE PURPOSE OF GIFTS Show Love- (Mat 2:11) And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

(2 Cor 9:7) Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

THE PROCURING OF GIFTS:

A) Ask- (Mat 7:11) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

B) According to the will of the giver- Holy Spirit gifts- (1 Cor 12:8) For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

What should you do with Gifts?

A) Don’t Treat them lightly- (1 Tim 4:14) Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

B) Make an effort to put them to use- (2 Tim 1:6) Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

Fear Him (7, 9), Keep from lying (13), Turn from Sin, do good, and seek peace (14), Have Humble Hearts (18)

Serve God (22),

Is this really a need? Is this really good for me? Is this the best time for me to have this desire?

John 03:16 GIFTS FROM GOD

GOD WANTS TO GIVE YOU GOOD GIFTS THAT ARE PERFECT FOR YOU: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning (James 1:17).

Here are some of those Gifts:

1. The Holy Spirit’s Power to perform: (It is one thing to labor in God’s vineyard (Church) but another to go forth into the “wilderness” (World) and prepare a place to plant seed for a new vineyard.

a. To those that desire it. Luke 11:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

b. To those that are saved: I Cor 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. Ep 4:8 He gave gifts unto the Church.

2. He wants to give you worry free sleep- Ps 127:2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

3. He gives us the things we need to ENJOY LIFE: I Tim 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.

4. He gives Rain and fruitful seasons- Lev 26:3-12 (Disobedience makes us earn wages to put into a bag with holes…) God even feeds the birds and clothes the flowers: Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? (Matthew 6:25-26).

5. He give us Breath and Life- Is 42:5 Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth; and that which cometh out to it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein (God Holds our Breath in His Hand- Dan 5)

6. He wants to give us Wisdom- Jam 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be give him.

7. He wants to give the REST your Soul Craves: Matt 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

BUT THE GREATEST GIFTS OF ALL ARE THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS:

A) His SON- Jn 3:16 begotten, unique. God became flesh and dwelt among men. Rev 5: only one found worthy.

B) Salvation- Ep 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works lest any man should boast.

C) Living Water- Jn 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water (Satisfaction).

D) Eternal Life- Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Jn 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

WHEN YOU GIVE A GIFT TO GOD He looks at your relationship with others as well as your gift-

A) Your relationship in the Church: Matt 5:23-24 If thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

B) Your relationship to your family: Matt 15:5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

Beware of Human Gifts. Ecc 7:7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

a. Affects our Judgment- Ex 23:8 Thou shalt take no gift (bribe); for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous. Prov 21:14 A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.

b. Affects our Home- Prov 15:27 He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.

c. Affects our outlook- Prov 17:8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

God’s Gift (Christ) affects HIS judgment of Us- It Pacifies His anger about our sins.

Accepting God’s Gift of Salvation affects our Home- It gives us foundation and guidance.

Accepting God’s Gift affects our Outlook- Every way you look at it it’s Great- Holy Spirit to guide in this life and Heaven with Christ in the next!!

God wants to give you some Gifts today—What are you willing to Give Him? I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:1-2).

John 03:16 THE GIFT GOD GAVE

With all the gifts given and received during the Christmas season it is almost too easy to overlook the tremendous Gift God gave on that First Christmas. That is tragic since God gave the greatest gift Heaven had to offer (See Rev 5:-) and we hear about it in this most familiar verse: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).

I. THE PASSION: “For God so Loved the world”

A) The One who loved: “God”, the divine creator, ruler, and ultimate Judge

B) The Ones who were loved: “The World” Whosoever will may come

C) The demonstration of that Love: “He Gave” A gift is not earned, it is given: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).

II. THE PERSON “His only begotten Son”

A) The Unique One: The word “begotten” means unique (God has many “sons” thru Christ: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name John 1:12).

Christ is Unique because of His Birth [4 ways men were born in the Bible- Adam: without man or woman. Eve: with man but without woman. Everyone else: Man and woman. Christ: woman without man].

Christ was conceived of the Holy Ghost making Him the Unique:

1) The Son of God- Emmanuel “God with us” (Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us Matthew 1:23). God became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His Glory! He was truly absolutely God.

2) The Son of Man- He was truly Man: touched with the feelings of our infirmities, tempted as we are tempted; yet without sin. He knew pain, weariness, and the heartbreak of friends and family turning their backs on Him. God became man in order to bring man to God!

B) The Unusual Way: Not a system of belief, a book of practices, or a new “religion”. He was a PERSON who showed us God! (In him was life; and the life was the light of men John 1:4).

III. THE PROVISION “Believeth in Him” A gift is no good unless you can receive it!

A) Available to ALL “Whosoever will may come”

B) Accessible to ALL by faith (Believeth in Him). Not our efforts, or our kin, or our money, or our goodness but our Faith in what God becoming Flesh, dying for our sin debt, and raising from the grave.

IV. THE PROMISE “Should not perish but have everlasting life” (The “Warranty” with the gift).

A) A Saving Gift “Should not perish” For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23). (For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved John 3:17).

B) A Lasting Gift “Have everlasting Life”

C) A Transforming Gift “Everlasting Life”

1) Changed in this Life into new creatures in Christ

2) Promised an Eternal Life of Fellowship with God (And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent John 17:3).

Would YOU like to have God’s Gift today? For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).

John 18:37 WHY JESUS CAME

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice (John 18:37).

As we approach the Christmas season it’s very hard for us to keep “Christ in Christmas” because there are so many things to take our mind off the purpose and meaning of Christmas. We have to buy gifts for people that we have no idea what they want, with money we don’t have, while taking the time to do so with a schedule that is already stretched to the breaking point.

It is hard to keep your mind on the babe in Bethlehem when all you hear about is reindeers, Santa Claus, and pre-Christmas sales. I want to look today at the reason Christ gave for His coming and try to get our perspectives back in order.

(One of the keys to life is remembering that the Goal must come before the Going- Example of man who got in taxi and said, “Go as hard as you can!” When we realize the purpose of his coming we begin to live that goal instead of running around in circles “Doing the best we can”)

I. TO BEAR WITNESS OF THE TRUTH: Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice (John 18:37). What is the Truth? In a world reeling with information, but skeptical of everything, they want to know the truth.

II. TO SEEK AND TO SAVE THE LOST: For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10). This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief (1 Timothy 1:15). To Seek (as a shepherd seeking sheep) and to Save (From sin, self, and Satan)

III. TO FULFIL THE LAW: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil (Matthew 5:17). The Lord’s Law has been paid on the Cross. Christ can now undo the heavy burden and set the captive free.

IV. TO SERVE: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28). The Christmas spirit is giving of yourself. A gift is bought with money which is a measure of time you invested.

V. TO PURGE EVIL: I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? (Luke 12:49).

Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law (Luke 12:51-53). Purge means to burn our impurities in order to make us sanctified and meet for the Master’s use.

VI. TO BRING JUDGMENT: And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind (John 9:39). To show men the way so they will have no excuse- If I offer to pay for your meal and you refuse; YOU PAY!

John 3:16 THE COMING OF CHRIST

There will be many gifts given and received this Christmas. Some will be loved and some will be tolerated and many will be exchanged! But the reason for the season is to celebrate the Gift that God gave us in the person of His Son Jesus Christ. The Birth of Jesus Christ was begun with a Miracle (Incarnation- Gen 3:15 “seed of woman”), clothed in a Mystery, and surrounded by Marvels. Let’s examine the coming of Christ and learn why everyone ought to accept God’s Gift.

I. THE REASON FOR HIS COMING

A) To fulfill God’s Purpose- From Gen 3 until the Birth of Christ God has promised that help was on the way. Prophecy after prophecy told about where Jesus would be born, how he would be born, the results of his birth, etc. Jesus came to fulfil all of these. REMEMBER: What God Promises He fulfills!

B) To Restore man to his place in God’s Plan. God could have discarded man and started over but He loved man and wanted him to become part of His plan. CHRIST DID NOT COME TO SAVE US FROM LIFE BUT TO GIVE US ETERNAL LIFE. Men have compassed sea and land and spent all their wealth to find a “fountain of Youth” to extend the length of their life; but Christ came to give them a greater quality of life regardless of its length.

II. THE RESULTS OF HIS COMING-

A) God is revealed (In the OT man is made in the image of God; in the NT God is made in the image of man!). Jn 1:14 And the word was made flesh, and dwelth among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jn 14:9 He that hath seen me hath seen the Father;

Jn 14:6‑7 I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. What is God like?? Loves sinners, hates sin, helps men, etc

B) Mankind is redeemed (Bought off the slave market of sin). Gal 4:4‑5 When the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the Law, to redeem them that were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Jn 4:14 We have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the saviour of the world.

Saved From Hell, saved For the delights of Heaven.

C) Satan is Ruined (Enemy defeated) “The Birth of Jesus was an announcement of Peace and a declaration of War”. I Jn 3:8 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Heb 2:14‑15 That through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (You can’t cut me off if you cut off my head). I Cor 15: 55,57 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

III. THE RETURN OF HIS COMING- First he came as Savior, Next he will come as Judge. When he came at first there were many signs; Swaddling clothes, star, birthplace (The religious leaders knew the Book but not the Blessing); but they all were shown AFTER HIS BIRTH. His return will be the same; the Rapture will take the Bride while those who remain will see many signs of Judgment.

A Pastor heard that one of his widows was going to be evicted from her home so he collected some money and carried it to her. He knocked and knocked and could get no answer. The next day he went back and found her sitting beside her belongings on the street. He told her he had come the day before and could get no answer. “I thought you were the rent collector”, she cried. Don’t YOU turn down God’s gift!

Lu 2:16-17 SPREADING GOOD NEWS

Lu 2:16-17 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

The PURPOSE of Christs coming is sometimes lost amidst the hustle and bustle of Christmas. This purpose, however, is the reason for all that is done in the Christian community. 1Ti 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

Like the Shepherds, our purpose then is to spread the good news about a Savior being born. How are we to go about doing that? The Bible model is Ac 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

1) Jerusalem- Your Local Community

2) Judea- Your State

3) Samaria- Home Missions (Mexico, US, Canada)

4) Unto the uttermost part of the earth- Foreign Missions

How do you spread the good news in your LOCAL COMMUNITY? 3 Ps Post cards, Phone Calls, Personal Contact- Friendship in India

How do you help spread the good news in

A) YOUR STATE:- Pray, Partner ($), Promote (Addresses)

B) HOME MISSIONS: Short term trips, Pray for someone regular

C) FOREIGN MISSIONS: Remember the emotional needs (Aycock: death, Johnson: Visa, Moore: new marriage, language, location. Gainer: Cramped quarters, deficient account. Pooles: Age and responsibilities, Leader. Hanna: over site of an entire country.

God calls you to spread the good news. But the shepherds had to see Christ before they could talk about Christ. Have you met Christ? If you died today, where would you spend eternity?

Luke 1: 26-56 MARY THE MOTHER

Some denominations have done a disservice to Mary, the mother of Jesus, by making her to be more than human but most of us have done her an equal injustice by ignoring her sacrifice and contribution in bearing and raising the Christ child. I think we can benefit greatly from her example; and at the same time check up on our willingness to be used of God.

I. MARY’S MOTHER– Nothing is said in scripture about Mary’s Parents (except her father’s name in the genealogy of Jesus (Heli) Luke 3:23) but it is significant that Mary went to Elizabeth’s house when she found she was with Child and stayed there almost 3 months. Many fine Christian Ladies have unbelieving Parents and must find that “special” friendship with other Christians (Elizabeth was also having a “special” child so she could relate to Mary’s difficulties).

Note also that when Mary first came to Elizabeth the “babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost”; a sign to Both Elisabeth and Mary of God’s power and plan. Christians have a “special bond” that allows them to see things with the Spirit instead of the Flesh.

Do you know the Bond and Blessedness of being part of the Body of Christ??

II. MARY’S MIND– At a time when it was almost unheard of for a woman to attend school because most women were looked upon as “second class citizens” with few rights and many responsibilities (The Pharisees would pray daily, “I Thank God I’m not a Gentile, a dog, or a Woman!) it appears that this Peasant Girl from the backwoods town of Nazareth had not allowed her mind to be “dulled” by the world. She had:

A) An Humble Mind- When Gabriel appeared to her she cast in her mind what manner of salutation this was (Luke 1:26‑29), Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. The Humble person is one that does not know they are humble!

Mary and Jesus must have gotten along very well because Humility was the constant characteristic of Jesus. That’s something for Christian women to remember today. We live in a society that stresses pride and “pushiness” and the equality of the sexes has pushed many women to take on the bad characteristics of their male counterparts. A woman God can honor must be humble.

B) A Reasoning mind- How shall these things be seeing I know not a man? (Luke 1:34). God sometimes asks us to do some very difficult things that will not make “sense”. It’s important for us to see things as they really are and then appropriate the Faith necessary to accomplish God’s Purpose. Many women use all their “wiles” and wisdom to change their husbands and families but can’t seem to grasp that God would use them if they are willing to do it HIS WAY.

Are you willing to follow God’s Plan regardless of the “Sense”?

C) A Considering Mind- But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart (Lu 2:19). I wonder if when Mary was painfully riding that donkey to Bethlehem she knew that God was moving her to fulfill prophecy? I wonder when she thrashed in the pain of child-birth among the hay and animal smells of that stable if she had any idea Angels were singing a “Hallelujah Chorus” to shepherds on the hill? Regardless, when she saw how God was working she considered and marveled. Do YOU see how God is working in YOUR LIFE and praise Him for what He is doing?

III. MARY’S MORALS- Luke 1:26‑28

A) A Virgin- Purity of Body (She was “Engaged” to Joseph but she was willing to wait to follow God’s Plan regarding the desires of the flesh). Do you live for the Moment or the Master?

B) Highly Favored- “Much Graced” or “”graciously accepted”. God knew Mary’s Human failings but He “found favour” with her (vs 30) and chose her for the Mother of His Son!! (You know something even more amazing, He knew me and yet He still welcomed me to become a “brother” and a “bride” to His Son!!).

C) “The Lord is with thee”- She had a Relationship with God. God chose her because She had chosen God.

D) Blessed art thou among women- Her Morals and her standing with God allowed her to serve God in a very unique way. While this particular act of service was a one time opportunity yet there remain many areas of service for Godly women in today’s society; if they will maintain their purity and relationship with God.

IV. MARY’S MAGNIFICAT (Luke 1:46‑55)- Described by some as “The last Old Testament Psalm and the First New Testament Hymn”, this marvelous “song” by Mary reveals a tremendous amount about her character and convictions.

A) She Gave God the Glory- My soul doth magnify the Lord, and My spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

B) She Exalted God’s Character:

1. HIS NAME- Holy is His Name 49

2. HIS MERCY- Mercy on them that fear him from generation to generation 50

3. HIS POWER- Strength showed with his arm. 51

4. HIS KNOWLEDGE- Scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart 51

5. HIS JUDGMENT- Put down the mighty from their seats, exalted them of low degree 52

6. HIS JUSTICE- Filled the hungry with good things; the rich he hath sent away empty.

7. HIS FAITHFULNESS- Helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy 54‑55

Mary was indeed a “marvel” and greatly to be honored but I want to close today with the words of Jesus when someone tried to “Over Honor” Mary- Luke 11:27‑28 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea, rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Many people today say they would be willing to accept the role given Mary but are You willing to hear and obey God’s word about your need of Salvation and Service? “Yea, rather, Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it”.

Luke 2:11 REASON FOR THE SEASON

(I dislike preaching AT Christmas‑ not ABOUT Christmas‑ because everyone’s mind is so preoccupied and their bodies are so tired. So let’s try to focus today on why we go thru all this).

Why is there a Christmas? We know it’s not just Santa and Sales and Decorations and Dinners. It’s to celebrate the Birth of the Son of God Jesus Christ. But some would ask, “Why would God send His only begotten Son into the world to be born of a virgin?” God had at least 7 good reasons for sending Jesus:

1. To Reveal the invisible God: Jn 1:18 No man hath seen god at any time; the only begotten son, which is in the bosom of the father, he hath declared him. The Gospels reveal Him as King, Servant, Man, and God

2. To Fulfill Prophecy:

A) About a coming Redeemer‑ Gen 3:15 and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. This “Scarlet Thread” of Redemption can be traced thru the entire Old Testament‑ thru every lamb that was slain‑ unto Calvary’s Hill

B) About a Coming King‑ Luke 1:31‑33 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the son of the highest: and the lord god shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Human Kings had come and gone‑ some good, some bad. Now men’s hearts were craving a King to bring real Peace and righteousness.

3. To fulfill Biblical Types:

a. Our Shame: Clothes for Adam and Eve (Christ covers our nakedness)

b. Our Sin: Brazen Serpent to stem God’s Wrath (Christ saves us from serpent’s bite)

c. Our Substitute: Ram provided to Abraham to save Isaac

d. Our Substance: The Smitten rock to provide water‑ Smitten once for water, not twice

4. To provide an example for Believers: I Pet 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps. I Jn 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. He was a man of Prayer, Compassion, Obedience, Righteousness…

5. To reconcile man and God: Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethern, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to god, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. I Tim 2:5,6 For there is one god, and one mediator between god and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Our “High Priest” can be touched with the feeling of our infirmities because He has suffered being tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

6. To destroy the Devil’s Dominion over man: Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil. I Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the son of god was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Jesus delivered us from the FEAR of Death; gave us power and weapons to FIGHT the good fight of Faith; and allows us to capture Satan’s FOLLOWERS by showing them from the darkness to the Light.

7. To take away sin: I Jn 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. But above everything else we need to realize that the reason for Christmas is Easter! The Babe of Bethlehem is the Christ of Calvary. Christ came that you might have Life and that more abundantly. Jn 3:16 sums it up as good as any sermon could‑ For god so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

What are you going to do about Christmas?? Celebrate its activities without accepting its Savior? Become so Busy until you can’t be Blessed? Or Worship the Son of God whose birthday we celebrate.

Luke 2:11 THE BABE OF BETHLEHEM

Luke 2:11 for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the lord.

Bethlehem is a Place of:

1. Fulfillment [God keeps His PROMISES]- Beginning at Eve and weaving thru the entire Bible is God’s promise of a coming Messiah. It was finally fulfilled at Bethlehem

A) God is Dependable- He’ll do what He said He’d do. He said He would provide GRACE and He did so; He said He’ll bring JUDGMENT and He’ll do so!

B) God is Punctual- He has an accurate watch! Gal 4:4 but when the fullness of time was come, god sent forth his son, Sometimes in your heart of hearts you think God doesn’t know or care but He’s working circumstances in such a way that the “cake” of your crisis will come out of the oven exactly done; instead of half-baked!!

C) God is Accurate- When He chose Joseph and Mary in Nazareth He already knew “Tax time” was coming! and they would be in Bethlehem when the Christ child was born.

The “Babe of Bethlehem” means we can rest in Peace about the Promises of God!

2. Freedom [God Provides us PARDON]- A Saviour is Born.

A) The WAGES of sin is DEATH- But the Babe of Bethlehem would die on the Cross of Calvary to pay sin’s Price for all who believe.

B) The WORK of sin is SLAVERY- We become servants of sin and dupes of the Devil until the Truth sets us free! The Babe of Bethlehem shows us that it’s not Pleasures, Prosperity, or Power that satisfies the craving of our heart but PEACE WITH GOD.

No wonder the Angel choir broke forth into song when the Babe of Bethlehem was born; They knew it was the beginning of the end of Satan’s hold on mankind.

3. Fellowship [God comes in PERSON]- John 1:14 and the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the father,) full of grace and truth. God came and dwelt among Men to show Man God and to show God man! Now we can grasp God (who is Spirit) and God can understand man (who is flesh).

John says there are 4 reasons why Christ was Manifested in the Flesh?

I. REVEAL ETERNAL LIFE– I Jn 1:1-4 that which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the word of life; (for the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the father, and was manifested unto us;) that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the father, and with his son jesus christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. Jn 17:3

II. TAKE AWAY SIN– I Jn 3:5 and ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

III. DEFEAT SATAN– I Jn 3:8 he that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the son of god was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

IV. REVEAL GOD’S LOVE– I Jn 4:9 in this was manifested the love of god toward us, because that god sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live through him.

As the world celebrates the Birth of the Babe of Bethlehem let’s not get so wrapped up in the PARTY until we miss the PEACE, the PARDON, and the PERSON of Jesus. And be sure not to miss the Gift He’s giving you- Eternal Life by Faith.

Luke 2:1‑17 A CHRISTMAS DEVOTION

Let’s take time tonight to look again at the marvelous story of the Birth of the Lord and gain some lessons we can use to keep Christ in the center of Christmas.

1. “Everyone went to be taxed”. Time of financial burden.

2. “Everyone to his own city”. Time to be with Family

3. “Her days were accomplished”. Realize God has a Time table. (Christ was born exactly WHEN He should be Exactly WHERE he should be!).

4. “Wrapped in swaddling clothes because of no room in the inn”‑ All things work together for the good to them that love the Lord. (Wrapped in swaddling clothes was a sign to the shepherds).

5. “The Glory of the Lord shone round about them”‑ Time to see the marvels of God: Expressions of Love, Joy in the face of a Child, God’s love manifest thru His Son.

6. “Praising God”‑ Time to sing and rejoice (Be Happy, the Savior is born)

7. “Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known to us.”‑ Time to find and worship Christ.

8. “They made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child”‑ Time to share Christ with someone.

Luke 2:1-20 BETHLEHEM BOUND

Bethlehem= “House of Bread”

1. Mary and Joseph moved to Bethlehem

God’s Plan moves kingdoms- Powers that be are ordained of God

God’s Plan moves Families-

God’s Plan did not force men to change (inn keeper)

2. Angels moved to Bethlehem’s skies

To Announce God’s Plan

To Sing God’s Glory

To Show how to Find Christ

3. Shepherds moved to Bethlehem

To See the sign

To Worship the King

To Spread the news

What do YOU find in Bethlehem??

1. A Way to accept the burden of taxes.

2. A way to accept family separation

3. A way to accept the hardness of people

4. A way to announce God’s will

5. A way to Glorify God

6. A way to Witness of Christ

7. A way to Worship Christ.

Luke 2:1‑20 CHRIST’S CHRISTMAS GIFTS2

Doctors tell us that from 30% to 60% of their patients get better just as quickly with a “Placebo” (Sugar colored water or sugar pills that the patient thinks is real medicine) as with real medicine!!! Sadly, that’s the same situation with Christmas. So many people accept the “Trappings” of Christmas as if they were the real thing and then wonder why Christmas brings them Problems instead of Peace, Sadness instead of Joy [An artificial apple may look even better than the real things but what a taste!!]. Let look at Christ’s Gift to us on that first Christmas and see what He actually gave (Even though it was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger).

CHRIST GAVE US:

I. HIS RICHES‑ II Cor 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, thought he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

DO YOU GIVE FROM YOUR POCKETBOOK; OR FROM YOUR HEART??? HAVE YOU ACCEPTED THE RICHES CHRIST GIVES YOU‑ JOY, PEACE, FREEDOM FROM FEAR…(THROUGH A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM).

II. HIS REPUTATION‑ Phil 2:7 made himself of no reputation, and took upon himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. Christ not only gave up His Riches but He also gave up the “Honor” which goes with it‑ the word became flesh and dwelt among men. The God of the Universe with thousands upon thousands of angels to do His every whim descended from the throne to a stable; from Comfort to the Cross. Why?? Why would Christ give up His Royalty and Reputation to come to earth among men who disbelieved Him, mocked Him, and finally killed Him.

He did this so that He could deal with our:

A) INFIRMITIES‑ Heb 4:15‑16 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities…Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Christmas means God knows what you feel‑ Sad, Depressed, Destitute and He can and will help you.

B) TEMPTATION‑ Heb 2:18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. The Stress and Pressures of Christmas don’t have to find an outlet in a bottle or a “Battle”. Christ will help you.

ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE FOR SOMEONE ELSE THIS CHRISTMAS???

III. HIS RIGHTS‑ Luke 22:27 I am among you as one that serves Mark 10:45 For even the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Christ didn’t come for what He could get; but for what He would Give (Isn’t it strange that we give gifts to everyone but Him on His Birthday!!). DO YOU GIVE THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO OR BECAUSE YOU WANT TO??? ARE YOU GIVING TO SOMEONE WHO CAN’T GIVE ANYTHING BACK?? (Remember that not all gifts come in brightly wrapped packages‑ time, love, food, fellowship‑ most things I remember about Christmas are “People” things, not gifts).

It will make this the best Christmas ever.

Luke 2:6-18 WHAT CHRISTMAS IS REALLY ABOUT

More and more I find myself disliking the Christmas season. The Rush, the Stress, and the poverty from buying all the presents and taking part in all the extra meals and parties all combine together to steal our Joy and burden our life- As I write this my wife has had the entire day at home today for the first day in the past two weeks and her bed time most of this week has been around 2am. Her battery is about to run down and there is still another week of intense Christmas activities stretching out in front of us. How did we let it come to this place? How did Christmas get so far out of control?
I dont know if I can answer those questions to anyones satisfaction–nor do I know if I can provide workable answers about how to change these situations. I can, however, tell you about what Christmas is SUPPOSED to be about; and hope that those instructions will help you handle some of the stress of a season out of control.

In Luke 2:6-18 there are 7 items emphasized that need to be a major part of our life this Christmas:

1) THE SWADDLING CLOTHES (6-7)
A) Faith of God- God came to earth as a man and put his care in the hands of a man! That took Faith.
B) Swaddling Clothes are clothes used to wipe the cattle- Representing the fact that as a man in the flesh, all our righteousness is as filthy rags
C) Laid in a manager because there was no room for him in the inn. Even today man continues to be too busy with his own needs to find room for God in his life.

2) THE SHEPHERDS (8)
A) Their Job- To watch the Temple Sheep that were to be sacrificed
B) Their shift- They had the night watch which was the least favorite job; yet these are the ones God chose to hear about the birth of Jesus-(1 Cor 1:26‑31) For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: {27} But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; {28} And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: {29} That no flesh should glory in his presence. {30} But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: {31} That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
C) Their Location- Abiding in the fields away from family and home- just like men who are lost in sin today.

3) THE SINGLE ANGEL (9)
A) The Angel of the Lord- Probably Michael or Gabriel
B) The Glory of the Lord- God is light and His glory is to expose Darkness
C) The Fear of the Shepherds- They were sore afraid- Angelic appearances always brought fear. Even today men fear when God sends someone to expose their sin.

4) THE SERMON (10-12) The ingredients to a good sermon are found here:
A) Ease the fears of the People
B) Proclaim the Joy that comes from God
C) Announce Jesus- Every sermon must major on Christ to be effective
D) Show people how to find Christ- Look for a sign (Babe in swaddling clothes in a manager). Look to see God at work- Conviction, Circumstances, Concern

5) THE SINGING (13-14)
A) Angels Said- The only place I can find where Angels sing is in Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
B) Heavenly Praise- All songs should bring Glory to God in the Highest
C) Earthly Proclamation- On Earth Peace, Good will toward men- More than Health or wealth, men need Peace with God thru the mercy of God.

6) THE SEEING (15-16) A Message from God should bring
A) A Response- Let us go even now into Bethlehem
B) An urgency- With haste (The Sheep were Home Alone)
C) An Obedience to God- Which the Lord has made known unto us

7) THE SHARING (17-18) When you find Christ it will be Natural to Tell someone (VA Doctor who shared his trip from being an Atheist to being a committed Christian now doing volunteer work)
A) For the Lost- With the heart man believes unto righteousness and with the Mouth confession is made unto salvation
B) For the Saved- We want everyone to know the good news- Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere.

So there you have it. Christmas is all about the announcement of the birth of Gods only Son, Jesus Christ. This babe of Bethlehem came that you might have life- (John 3:16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Your response today should be to turn from your sinful ways and accept Gods Gift of Salvation through Faith in Christ. And if we put Christ back in Christmas we might put Joy back into the Christmas season.

Luke 2:8 NIGHT WATCHES

Luke 2:8 And there were in the same country Shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night

Night Watches give us time to:

1, MEDITATE: Ps 63:6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. During the night watch you have time to rest and reflex on God’s goodness, of His Judgment, and of His Mercy.

2. CONSIDERATE: Ps 8:3‑4 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? You have time to see the marvels of God.

3. CONTEMPLATE: Ps 119:148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word. You have time to Contemplate the Meaning and Method of Life as revealed in God’s Word.

4. SUPPLICATE: Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street (Lamentations 2:19). Time to seek the face of God and hear the voice of God.

Luke 2:8-14 THE SHEPHERD’S SERMON

I imagine these shepherds were like most of us; a little upset at having to work the “graveyard” shift in the fields while the rest of the town celebrated the excitement surrounding the Census Crowd. Sitting by the fire that night, watching the glow of distant Bethlehem, they probably mourned their lot in life and never dreamed that thousands and countless thousands of men and boys would pretend to be them in years to come!

Suddenly the serenity of that fireside was disturbed by a blinding light that brought terror to the hearts of these men. But immediately following the terror came a message; one of the greatest messages the world had ever heard, the message that the Messiah was come!

As we sit calmly in our pews today thinking of the pressure of Christmas schedules and Christmas bills, I want us to look at this message and see The SERMON, the SIGN, and the SAYING contained in it so that we too can see the Savior.

I. THE SERMON: LUK 2:10-11 And the angel said unto them, fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

A) To Calm their fear- “Fear Not”. Unexpected and unexplained things bring fear and worry. Yet sometimes the very thing that brings the fear is the messenger of Good News! (As the Angels were here)

B) To Proclaim the Good News- “Good tiding of great joy”

1. To all People

2. A Savior is born, Christ the Lord. That’s the greatness of our message even today. Death, hell, and the grave have been defeated and fear should no longer hold you in bondage. Like the Shepherds, we too many times face sudden crisis- major disease, death of a loved one, unexpected debt, acute loneliness, etc. God’s message to us is that Christ has been born bringing good tidings of great joy about life and all its problems:

1. Disease- You can live with it [in which case God will give sufficient Grace- II Cor 12:9] or die from it [in which case you can go to be with Christ!!].

2. Death- O death, where is thy sting. O grave, where is thy victory!

3. Debt- Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, Eph 3:20

4. Loneliness- He is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

II. THE SIGN– LUK 2:12 And this shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

A) The Baby- God sent a Baby to conquer the world- A Baby for God is more POWERFUL than any force in the world.

B) The Bundling- Swaddling clothes- PROSPERITY is not how much you own for this was the King of Kings in rags.

C) The Bassinet- a manger- Not based on your PLACE in society. To the Wise men God sent a STAR, to the Shepherds He sent a STABLE. He always points the way to Christ in a way YOU can recognize.

III. THE SAYING– LUK 2:13-14 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising god, and saying, glory to god in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

A) Praises for God- For only in loving and adoring Him do we find what our heart craves.

B) Peace for Men- Because the Baby was born in Bethlehem, Christ would die on the Cross, and men could find Peace and Salvation.

The Sermon for the Shepherds contained a message, an example, and a conclusion (Good rules for every preacher to follow as he builds his sermons!). But a sermon demands a response. How should you respond to the Shepherd’s Sermon? LUK 2:15 and it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the lord hath made known unto us. Come to Christ.

Luke 2:8‑20 THE SHEPHERDS

Almost every boy in Church knows what it is to dress up in a bathrobe and play the part of the Shepherds in a Christmas play. (Most boys like this role because it requires no speaking!!). Most of the time this is considered an unimportant part but we need to realize that God chose Shepherds to be the first to hear the Message of the coming of the Messiah and as such gave them tremendous honor.

Today we are faced with many of the same circumstances that the Shepherds had to endure and it is important that we recognize how we fit in God’s plans.

Called while at Normal Task / Feared because of newness / Were brought Good News / Were given a Sign to look for‑ babe wrapped in swaddling clothes / Heeded the Word, went and found / Told others of what they’d seen.

I. THE GLORY OF THEIR CALL: Shepherds were not considered in the “Ten most desired jobs” of their day. Most people probably felt sorry for them having to sit out on the cold hillside watching sheep while they enjoyed the extra money and excitement brought about by everyone having to come home to register to be taxed. But we must realize that God looks at things in a different way than man does.

A) Famous Shepherds of the past:

1. Abel: The First Martyr. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd, the good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep” Jn 10:11.

2. Abraham: The Shepherd that left home to find a “Promised” Land. Jesus left Heaven for earth so that we could enjoy a “New” earth.

3. Isaac: The Shepherd that became the “Sheep” of sacrifice. Jesus said, “I lay down my life that I may take it again.” Jn 10:17

4. Moses: The Shepherd who was rejected by his people, yet he delivered them. While rejected, he claimed a Gentile Bride.

5. David: The Shepherd who became King. Jesus is King of Kings.

B) What makes Shepherds Special:

1. Their Love for their sheep.

2. The time they have to allow God to speak to them. (Everyone else was too busy to even give Jesus a place to be born.)

II. THE GLORY OF THE MESSAGE THEY RECEIVED

A) The Meaning of the Message:

1. Good Tidings‑ Needed because of:

‑‑‑An unfeeling Government that thought people existed for its benefit instead of the other way around.

‑‑‑Taxes (Money worries)

‑‑‑Uncaring people (Innkeeper)

Jesus came to show us His love for us and how to love one another.

2. Great Joy‑ victory over Death & Despair. No longer bound by Sin or circumstances.

3. Global Impact‑ Which shall be to all people. Whosoever WILL my come‑‑ Wise men, Shepherds, etc.

4. God Incarnate‑ A Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. The heart of the Gospel, God became man to die for man.

B) The Delivery of their Message: By Angelic Host

III. THE GLORY OF THEIR TASK

A) To return to their job‑ Manifest God where they were

B) To Glorify and Praise God‑

C) To bear witness of what they had seen and heard.

Matt 1:18-25 JOSEPH, THE FATHER

One of the most forgotten figures of the Christmas Story is Joseph. Ask almost anyone about the Christmas story and they will tell you about Mary, the Shepherds, the Wise Men, and the Angels but seldom, if ever, will they remember to mention Joseph.

I. HIS FATHERLINESS– This “forgotten Hero” played a tremendously important part in the early years of Jesus (He evidently died between the time Jesus was 12 and 30 because nothing is said of him during Jesus’ Ministry). He Married Mary, Cared for her during the move to Bethlehem and the birth of Christ (Probably no family was available), provided for her and the baby until he was old enough to move, listened to the voice of the angels and moved Jesus to Egypt to avoid Herod killing him, and then followed God’s directions back to Nazareth.

He evidently taught Jesus his trade as a Carpenter as well as instilled in him the religious principles a Jewish father was commanded to teach his child (Carried him to the temple each year and instilled a “habit” of church attendance in Jesus {Lu 4:16}). When Jesus began his ministry he was well instructed in the Word of God so he could withstand the temptations of Satan as well as the wiles of the Pharisees.

II. HIS FAMILY– He had 4 boys and some girls. Matt 13:54-56 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethern, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

III. HIS FIANCEE– Mary was “espoused” (From a Greek word meaning “To give a present”; therefore the initial Marriage gift had been given) to him as a Wife to be. A Normal Espousal period was 1 year.

[“Espoused” is used on only 2 other occasions- When David said he was “Espoused” (Hebrew- Engaged) to Michal (II Sam 3:14) and when Paul said he had “espoused” (Greek- to join) the Church to Christ (II Cor 11:2)].

In New Testament times the Rabbis has fixed the minimum age for marriage at 12 for girls and 13 for boys so it was generally left to the Parents to chose their mates (Abraham sent a servant to secure a wife for Isaac. She was brought over 1000 miles before she even saw Isaac and was considered his “engaged” wife from the time she left home).

Once the engagement was set the parents entered into financial negotiations for the “Marriage Price”. This was not the price of a “Slave” but compensation to the Father of the Bride for loss of a worker in his household. Once the contract had been agreed on and the down payment made the couple were considered “espoused” and a “divorce” was necessary to break the contract (Such a divorce would of course be granted if the Bride to be was found to be unfaithful; as it appeared in the case of Mary).

IV. HIS FAITHFULNESS When told about God’s Plan He immediately did his part. Joseph was a “normal” man with normal duties but he allowed himself to be greatly used of God. WILL YOU??

Matt 2:1-11 CHRISTMAS IS THE SAME

It has been over 2000 years since that first Christmas but Christmas remains the same.

1. Even WISE MEN do not know what to give for Christmas.

For Joseph- Give him money (Gold)

For Mary- Give her some perfume (frankincense)

For Baby Jesus- Myrrh of bitterness at having to buy a present for someone you dont know what they need (Represented the coming Death of Christ. Realize the future implications of the gift you give).

2. The Government is out to erase Christianity from the earth-

Absolute Truth from God is now considered False (Editor who believed a History Channel report more than the Bible)

Angry Blaming of God for anything bad that happens as if their actions and activities had nothing to do with it.

Amusement about God and His people is considered proper (More and more God is mocked and his people are laughed at).

3) Christmas is a time of travel and economic hardship for families. Joseph and Mary had to travel to Bethlehem for a taxing census. They had no job, no room, no doctor, and strangers drop by unexpectedly (Shepherds) to gawk at them and talk about them (Sound Familiar?).

4) It is the Same in its Meaning:

To show Gods Love: (1 John 4:9) In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

To Connect with Humans- He lived as a man suffering hunger, persecution, family problems, etc. so now we have a great high priest praying with us who knows the needs of our heart.

To bring Joy to the World because the Savior has come.

Matt 2:1-11 WHAT CAN I GIVE HIM?

The Background:

Matthew, Jesus as King- Information is given by Angels

Luke, Jesus as Man- Information comes from Dreams

Interesting that Matthew includes several women of bad background- Rahab, the Harlot, Ruth, the Moabite, a son of her that had been the wife of Urias (Bathsheba).

Three Wise WOMEN would have:

ASKED DIRECTIONS

ARRIVED ON TIME

BIRTHED THE BABY

CLEANED THE STABLE

MADE A CASSEROLE

AND THERE WOULD BE PEACE ON EARTH

The Wise Men sought Jesus in order to WORSHIP Him – Matt 2:2, 11. The gifts they gave flowed out of their worship of Him.

FIRST- Put worship of God first on your list.

SECOND- Include a Gift for God in your giving

A) Gold- Dont spend so much money on the other guests until you have nothing left over for the Birthday Boy

Go from Maintain your life to supporting Missions and Church

Go from building your Mansions to giving “Mansion Information” to others

B) Frankincense- Aroma of Prayer- God keeps our prayers in a bottle (Rev 5:8).

C) Myrrh- Sacrifice of self

What can I give Him poor as I am, If I were a shepherd I would give a lamb. If I were a wise man, I would do my part. What can I give Him? What can I give Him? I will give Him my heart.

Micah 6:6-8 GIVING A GIFT TO GOD

Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? (Micah 6:6-8).

As we approach the Christmas season there are some things you need to ask about gifts; and especially your gift to God. After all, it is HIS Birthday Party. (Just for reference, no gifts were given on that first Christmas; only a visit from shepherds. The Wise Men came with their gifts a year or so after “Christmas” when Jesus and his family were living in a house).

I. DO I HAVE THE RIGHT TO GIVE GOD A GIFT? (Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God?). If you think yourself unworthy consider this. Jewish Genealogies always contained men. The Genealogy of Christ contains 4 women. Note that their background did not stop them giving the gift of children to God’s Plan.

A) TAMAR- Her children were the product of her acting as a Prostitute to her father-in-law, Judas

B) BATHSHEBA- “her that had been the wife of Urias”

C) RUTH, the Moabitess- An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever (Deuteronomy 23:3). [Interesting what the counsel told Boaz when he took Ruth as his wife- And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman (Ruth 4:12).

D) MARY- Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child… (Matthew 1:18).

Not only do you worry about “Am I good enough” but also:

II. DO I HAVE ANYTHING “GOOD ENOUGH” TO GIVE GOD? (shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?). Micah did not think his Religion (burnt offering), his Riches (Ten Thousand rivers of oil), or his Relatives (the fruit of his body) would cover the “sin of my soul”. What, then, is ANYTHING you can give a God who created EVERYTHING!

III. WHAT GIFT DOES GOD DESIRE FROM ME? (He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee).

A) To do justly- Only way we can be justified is through Faith [Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20).

Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law (Romans 3:28).

Once we come BY FAITH we should then “Do Justly” so we can honor God with our life.

B) AND to love mercy- Remember that others struggle with life also; Give them a break.

C) AND to walk humbly with thy God- Keep God as God in your life. You do not control Him; you serve Him!

Our reference verses were the “life verses” of Malcolm Powell. I am thankful to be able to say living right, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God were Malcolm’s way of life. It was his gift to God and it should be yours as well.

OUR BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR CHRIST—-Dec 25, 1988

We have come together this Christmas morning to celebrate the Birth of the Son of God and to lift our voices in adoration and worship. With a little help from my “friends” and the choir I hope we can catch a little of the glory and exultation of this wonderful day. Easter is a time of Sadness that turns to Triumph but Christmas is a time of Family gatherings, Festive occasions, and the joy of sharing gifts– and receiving the gift of eternal life given by God beginning on that first Christmas morning. So let’s examine the Glory of the Christ Child with Scripture and Prayer this Christmas Morning.

THE CHRISTMAS STORY– Luke 2:1-17………….Connie Mathis

I. THE GLORY OF HIS NAME– [Kathy Lewis, Scripture] Phil 2:9-11 Wherefore god also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of god the father.

A) HIS NAME AS KING‑ Is 9:6 for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called wonderful (Worship), counsellor (Wisdom), the mighty god (Power), the everlasting father (Permanent), the prince of peace (Peace). We can have Confidence, Reliance, and Faith in Him to do right.

B) HIS NAME AS SAVIOUR‑ Matt 1:21 and she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins. Jesus is the same as “Joshua” and as such describes how Jesus leads us from the Wilderness of Sin into the Promised Land.

THE PURPOSE OF HIS NAME: [Angela Young, Scripture]

1. PREACH IN IT‑ Luke 24:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Christ is our Message!

2. PRAY BY IT‑ Jn 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the father may be glorified in the son Access to the “Bank of Heaven” with the Son’s Signature!!

3. POWER OF IT‑ Acts 3:16 And his name, through faith in his name, hath make this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the

presence of you all. Just whisper “Jesus”. It brings calmness to the soul and confusion to the Devil.

4. PRAISE TO IT‑ Eph 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto god and the father in the name of our lord Jesus Christ. All Glory and Praise should be given to His name.

CHOIR– “I Know a Name Medley”= Anne Thigpen, Solo

II. THE GLORY OF HIS NATURE– [Yvette Poston, Scripture] Matt 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, god with us. Jesus said he that hath seen me hath seen the father John 14:9. This simply means the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14. CHOIR– “Angel’s Song Medley”= Todd Newell, Solo

III. THE GLORY OF HIS SALVATION– [Anne Gowdy, Scripture] John 3:16 For god so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Rom 6:23 the wages of sin is death; but the gift of god is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Choir– “Redeeming Love Medley”= Damon Runion, Solo

A little Girl was drawing on the beach when a man came by. “What are you drawing?” he asked. “A picture of God.” she replied. “But no one knows what God looks like.” the man said. The Girl replied, “Wait 5 more minutes and you will!”. Our “Five Minute” wait is over. Christ is born; and we can be born again! God has a marvelous gift for you this Christmas day; will you accept it???

Rom 06:23 THE GIFT THAT GIVES

God gives us the ability to ENJOY Life: I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God. (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13).. Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. (Ecclesiastes 5:18-19). Living like the devil is not enjoying life; it is destroying life.

God gives us the ability to have ETERNAL Life: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23).

It is this gift of Eternal Life that I want us to look at today and see that it a Gift that Keeps on Giving as it impacts us; and those around us, for now and eternity.

I. GOD GAVE THE SON– John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God did not give this gift because we deserved it. He gave it by His mercy and grace because He LOVED us. Hell is what we deserve. Heaven is God’s gift to us.

II. THE SON GAVE THE SPIRITNevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (John 16:7).

Jesus as a human could only dwelt among us but the can Spirit dwell IN EVERY Christian to guide and grow us. You do not have to “hold out”; you simply have to let the Spirit “love out” through you.

III. THE SPIRIT GIVES THE CHURCH– I Cor 12:7-11 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

The Spirit gives Spiritual Offices (laying on of hands), Spiritual Graces (Fruits of the Spirit), and Spiritual Gifts (Parts of the Body of Believers). [Wisdom knows what needs to be done. Knowledge knows how to do what needs to be done. Faith believes that what needs to be done can be done. Obedience listens to wisdom, knowledge, and faith and does what needs to be done. Working together the Body of Christ gets the job done.]

IV. THE CHURCH GIVES THE GOSPEL– Matt 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

We win people who we then teach to live for God and win others

V. THE GOSPEL GIVES LIFE– Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. It is a gift we accept by Faith: Eph 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast.

God gives us richly all things to enjoy (1Tim6:17). Accept His Gift that keeps on giving Today.

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR A GREAT CHRISTMAS

1. Thou shalt prepare early. Don’t wait until the last minute to try to get into the Christmas spirit.

2. Thou shalt keep Christ at the center of Christmas. Don’t allow yourself to be overwhelmed by the commercialism of the season. Resolve to read one of the Gospels during December and meditate upon what it means that Christ came into the world.

3. Thou shalt make Christmas a family time. Do things together: decorate the tree, play games, bake cookies, shop, write cards, have devotionals, and go caroling.

4. Thou shalt remember those who are less fortunate. Contribute significantly to an organization serving the needs of others throughout the year.

5. Thou shalt give thyself with every gift. Put some thought into the gifts you purchase. Give a gift that represents you. If possible, make something instead of buying something.

6. Thou shalt learn to be a good receiver. Most of us have more trouble receiving than we do giving.

7. Thou shalt put music into Christmas. Buy several Christmas albums and wear them out. Attend the church’s cantatas and special Christmas programs. Sing carols as a family.

8. Thou shalt slow down. Remember, Christmas is supposed to be a season of peace, not hypertension.

9. Thou shalt remember to worship. The church is the place yo are most likely to be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas.

10. Thou shalt receive the Christ into thy life. Don’t just talk about the Christ of Christmas. Receive Him into your life as Savior and Lord.

THE CHRISTMAS STORY?

One reason some people have lost the joy of the Christmas season is because the Christmas story seems old and jaded to them. Maybe that’s because we think we know more than we actually do.

Here is a “Mistake Filled” version of the Christmas story that my wife made up for her Primary class. See if you can find the errors.

The Correct answers to this quiz (and other problems of life) are in your Bible. Read it again and find the joy you’ve been missing.

JESUS’ BIRTH LUKE 2:7-14

7. AND SHE BROUGHT FORTH HER FIRST BORN SON, AND WRAPPED HIM IN A BLANKET, AND LAID HIM IN A CRIB; BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ROOM FOR THEM IN THE HOTEL.

8. AND THERE WERE IN THE SAME STATE SHEPHERDS ABIDING IN THE PASTURE KEEPING WATCH OVER THEIR FLOCK BY DAY.

9. AND LO, THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAME UPON THEM, AND THE GLORY OF THE LORD SHONE ALL OVER THEM AND THEY WERE FILLED WITH JOY.

10. AND THE SHEPHERD SAID UNTO THEM, FEAR NOT: FOR, BEHOLD I BRING YOU GOOD TIDINGS OF GREAT GLADNESS, WHICH SHALL BE TO ALL ISRAEL, FOR UNTO YOU IS BORN THIS DAY IN THE CITY OF BETHLEHEM A SAVIOR WHICH IS JOHN THE BAPTIST.

12. AND THIS SHALL BE A SIGN UNTO YOU, YE SHALL FIND THE BABE WRAPPED IN A PINK BLANKET, LYING IN A BED.

13. AND SUDDENLY THERE WAS WITH THE ANGEL AN ENTIRE BACK UP BAND PRAISING GOD AND SINGING.

14. GLORY TO GOD IN THE HEAVENS AND ON EARTH CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR ALL PEOPLE.

THE FEARS OF CHRISTMAS

It’s Christmas time again and we’re trying to keep our perspective about Christmas‑ Gifts or God, Joy or Jealousy, Burdens or Blessings. But do we really care a great deal? It’s hard to meditate on Christmas while we’re worrying about Paying our Bills, finding that certain toy that no store seems to have, and making time for all the extra work that all the extra activities this time of year generate. “Joy to the World” sounds hollow and meaningless sometimes and we find the “Christmas Spirt” a very elusive things. How did they handle things during that first Christmas season??

I. THE FEARS:

1. Fear of the difficult: When Zacharias heard he was to be father to John the Baptist‑ Luke 1:12 and when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. When Zacharias saw the Angel, “Fear fell upon him” (Lu 1:11‑13) but the Angel told him to “Fear not: for thy prayer is heard” and you’ll have that Son you’ve prayed for and he will be the forerunner of Christ. God answers Prayer! He gives the needed Ability in His own time..]

Christ has now come and we have access to the Father through the Son. Now we know that God can do amazing things through obedient people. [It is interesting that Zacharias’ Faith over his fear caused other people to Fear!!!‑ Luke 1:64‑65 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised god. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judea].

2. Fear of communication: When the angel confronted Mary‑ Luke 1:28‑30 And the angel came in unto her, and said, hail, thou that art highly favoured, the lord is with thee: blessed art thou among woman. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with god.

Gabriel’s appearance to Mary “Troubled” and frightened her (and well it might, for the Angel told her she would have something happen to her that had never happened to another. She was to be with Child of the Holy Ghost.). But the Angel told her to “Fear not, for thou hast found favor with God” [In other words, God cares for you!! What a wonderful thing to know in time of trial].

3. Fear of People’s Opinion: When Joseph was considering putting Mary away‑ Matt 1:20 While he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the holy ghost.

Answer: This is of God; it matters not what men think.

4. Fear of the unusual: when the angels appeared to the shepherds‑ Luke 2:9‑11 And, lo, the angel of the lord came upon them, and the glory of the lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

The Unusual doesn’t have to be BAD! In this case, it was Good News! A Savior is Born. When the Angel of the Lord appeared to the Shepherds “they were sore afraid” (Lu 2:8‑18). But the Angel told them to “Fear not: for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy,…for unto you is born…a Savour, which is Christ the Lord.” God not only loves and provides for you but He is willing to Save You!! That’s the heart of Christmas‑ A Savior is Born.

II. THE FAITH:

A) Of Mary; who when told she was to be with Child of the Holy Spirit answered, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Lu 1:38). That’s Faith in the Word of God. God has never made a promise He didn’t keep and even though our circumstances may seem difficult we can trust God’s Word.

B) Of Joseph; who when told he must face the public and all their misunderstanding about his and Mary’s relationship “did as the Angel of the Lord had bidden him” (Matt 1:18‑28). That’s Faith on Trial. Faith to put God’s Plan above Personal Comfort.

C) Of the Shepherds: And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child (Luke 2:15-17). They wanted to see what had been revealed, they went to the place where “God as a baby” was at, and they became great witnesses of the coming of Christ.

Later, even the Wise Men had to overcome their fear of ridicule and travel by Faith. They “had eyes to see” and saw the sign of Christ’s Birth and went to worship Him. Distance was no obstacle and finding a babe in a house instead of a King in a palace did not cause them to doubt God. They still gave their gifts and worshipped. That’s Faith Triumphant‑ The substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen (Heb 11:1).

Do not allow your Fear to overcome your Faith. Believe in God and His love for you: There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love (1 John 4:18).

THE GIFT OF GOD

My wife has a pull over she wears this time of year that says, I like presents. I think all of us can relate to that. We all enjoy receiving gifts. Some gifts you receive will be:

– Memorial-White Elephant gifts that are fun or crazy

– Miscues- wrong sizes, colors, etc.

– Meaningful- A) Something you want. B) Something you need C) Something that shows Love

In case you did not know it- God is a Gift Giver. We all know about His great Gift at Christmas- His only begotten Son (Jesus) became a man in order than man might be able to come to God. But this is not the Only Gift of God. There are Three different things that are called the Gift of God in Scripture.

First are the Gifts of God to YOU:

I. ENJOYMENT of the Good life is a Gift from God. God gives us the ability to enjoy :

A) Our Labor- Eccl 3:13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God.

B) Our Income- Eccl 5:19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

We have found in recent years that the Good Life is not the ACCUMULATION of Things but the ABILITY to enjoy what you have (Would that the world could learn to live Paul’s statement in Phil 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content). It is a marvelous life when you can Enjoy WHAT YOU DO and WHAT YOU EARN. Multitudes of people hate their jobs and are never satisfied with their income.

If you are not enjoying Life as a Gift from God then:

(1) GET THE JOB GOD WANTS YOU TO HAVE so you can enjoy your labor

(2) TRUST GOD FOR PROVISION so you can enjoy what God has given you- (Phil 4:19) God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Enjoyment of the good life is not in the Study of Christianity but in the Practice of Christianity. When you do what God wants you to do, where God wants you to be; you live abundantly.

Second is the Gift of God for EVERYONE:

II. SALVATION:

A) From Wrath- Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

B) By Faith- Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

What a joy to know that God not only takes care of my Present, He has also forgiven my Past and Prepared my Future!

If you aren’t rejoicing in God’s Gift of Salvation then let me invite you today to Escape the Wrath to come by Trusting Christ as your Savior today.

Third are the Gifts of God for the WORK OF GOD:

III. SERVICE: All Service Gifts are chosen by God and not earned by Mans Ability or Efforts- Acts 8:20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 1 Cor 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

A) Various Gifts-1 Cor 7:7 For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:6‑21).

B) Special Gifts- 2 Tim 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. Called to the Ministry, to Missions, to Serve.

A place for everyone and everyone in his place.

A) Find what God has put in your heart and let it out. There is no greater joy than finding Gods path for your life and then walking that path. The reason I know the Mormons are a cult is because they put me in their choir and told me I was a good singer. Anyone who will lie about that cannot be trusted in other areas!

B) Do not try to be what God has not gifted you to be – When a soldier goes to war he must be

1) Fed- Cooks, Pie ministry, Home bound, etc.

2) Supplied- S S Superintendent gets literature, Deacons prepare Communion, etc.

3) Paid- Ushers, Treasurers

4) Doctored- Counselors, listeners, etc.

5) Assigned- Organizers,

6) Instructed- Teachers, Speakers

7) Communicated with- Secretaries, Phone workers, Letter writers, etc.

Christianity is a wonderful life when you find you place and do your job. It is a misery when you have an empty place in your heart where you have either left God out or tried to put a square peg into a round hole.

THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS

(Luke 2:10) And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. As we celebrate the Good Tiding of GREAT JOY that is part of Christmas we need to look at all the ways God brings Joy into our lives:

  1. Celebrating the Celebration of Christmas with family, friends, and food should bring Joy: (Neh 8:10) Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
  2. Knowing that God became flesh and we now can enjoy the indwelling of the Holy Spirit every day should bring us Joy: (Psa 16:11) Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
  3. God’s Blessings on our Life should bring Joy: (Psa 35:27) Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.
  4. Joy should be Part of Salvation: (Psa 51:12) Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
  5. The Word of God at work in our life should bring Joy: (Jer 15:16) Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts. (John 15:11) These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
  6. God’s Fellowship with us BRINGS GOD JOY (much as we joy over a baby): (Zep 3:17) The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.
  7. Answered Prayer Brings Joy- (John 16:24) Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
  8. Church Companions Bring Joy- (2 Tim 1:4) Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
  9. Believing on Christ fills you with Joy- (1 John 1:4) And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

THE MIRACLE OF CHRISTMAS

I. THE MEDICAL MIRACLE- Of His Virgin Birth

4 ways for a person to be born

1. Without man or woman- Adam

2. With man, without woman- Eve

3. With man and woman- everyone

4. Without man, with woman- Jesus

II. THE MANIFESTED MIRACLE Of God becoming a Man

A) In it’s timing- In the fullness of time, God sent forth His Son

B) In Our Temptations- He knows what we endure

THE NAME OF JESUS

It is interesting to note throughout the Bible the importance God puts on naming people:

The first person named was Eve‑ Gen 3:20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. (Adam was not “Named”; his name simply means “The Man”).

People’s names were used to describe something about their:

Looks‑ Gen 25:25 And the first came out red, all over like a hairy garment; and they called his name Esau (Red) or their

Standing‑ Seth means “Substituted” for Abel, Gen 4:25; or their

Circumstances‑ Moses means “Drawn out” of the water, Ex 2:10).

But the Greatest Name in all the World is the Baby whose birthday we are celebrating now- Jesus Christ. Let’s see some of the wonderful things about His name.

I. THE VARIATIONS OF HIS NAME-

A) His Name as Messiah- Is 9:6-7 for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called wonderful (Worship), counsellor (Wisdom), the mighty God (Power), the everlasting Father (Permanent), the prince of peace (Peace). Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon the kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. We must keep in mind that the “Babe of Bethlehem” was born to be King of kings and Lord of Lords. He was born in a stable but he’ll rule as Sovereign!

B) His Name as Man- Matt 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins. Jesus is the same as “Joshua” and as such describes how Jesus leads us from the Wilderness of Sin into the Promised Land. As a man he experienced the same temptations and trials we undergo so He is able to help us change our dreary life into an ABUNDANT LIFE.

C) His Name as God- Matt 1:23 Behold, a Virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Remember the little Girl who was drawing on the beach. “What are you drawing?” a man asked. “A picture of God.” she replied. “But no one knows what God looks like.” the man said. “Wait 5 more minutes and you will.” the girl replied!. Jesus said he that hath seen me hath seen the father John 14:9. Because Christ came to the Earth, We are now able to see how God would act under our circumstances; dealing with Temptation, Hunger, family problems, etc.

II. THE VALUE OF HIS NAME- Phil 2:9‑11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the father.

A) A Name is a MARK of Identify- We are therefore Not to use it in Vain- JESUS H CHRIST! He is not an oath to swear but a Saviour to Serve.

B) A Name is a MEANS to Communicate- Jn 1:1,14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. “Pepsi” and “Coke” are simply two names of vast numbers of soft drinks; yet most people when they want a soft drink say, “Give me a Pepsi or Coke” and you know immediately that they want a certain soft drink. In the same way, Jesus is God’s way of communicating His love and concern to us- John 3:16.

But it is not enough to simply know FACTS about the Name of Jesus. We must be able to apply his name in real life situations- I’m not interested in learning about the “lifestyles of the rich and famous” if I’m never going to live like that! I want to know how to make my life better.

III. THE VICTORY IN HIS NAME

A) We are to PRAY in the AUTHORITY of it‑ Jn 14:13 and whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the son. Access to the “Bank of Heaven” with the Son’s Signature!!

B) We are to PREACH FAITH in it‑ Luke 24:47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at jerusalem. Christianity’s entire message is Christ. John 12:32 and i, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

THE TRAGEDIES OF CHRISTMAS

I. THE TRAGEDY OF NO ROOM AT THE INN SO JESUS HAD TO BE BORN IN A MANGER. “There was no room at the Inn that there might be room for all to come in”.

II. THE TRAGEDY OF UNBELIEVING ISRAEL. The Announcement of His birth had to be made to lowly shepherds and foreign wise men.

Egypt has been honored for her mathematics; Chaldea for her astronomy; Greece for her philosophy and art; and Rome for her science of law- but true religion, the thing that was to make Israel honored throughout the world, became the stumbling block over which she fell into national judgment and condemnation.

III. THE TRAGEDY OF THE UNACCEPTED GIFT

WHAT DID YOU GET FOR CHRISTMAS?

This morning I would like to spend a few minutes telling you about a gift you “got” for Christmas.

ISA 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

ACT 11:17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

For Christmas we got a “Comforter.”

It was an appropriate gift (suitable, proper, becoming). It fit the occasion – the best holiday, the best gift.

It was something you needed

It was a satisfying gift – it was something you can use.

It was an expensive gift.

It was a gift that you won’t be disappointed with

Richie: Isa 9:2,6

Rina: Luke 2:1-14

Stephanie: John 3:16

This is probably one of the most asked questions today. Some got toys, bicycles, dolls, games, etc.. One of our nieces came to the house last night and she had gotten a brand new Pontiac Grand Prix. One of the neighbors down home got a brand new $45,000.00 back-hoe. All pretty good presents, wouldn’t you say? What did you get? Was it a gun, or maybe clothes????

In all the excitement of seeing what we “got”, we often overlook something that we all “got” that is more valuable than gold. I remind you that Stephanie read John 3:16 where “God gave His only begotten Son“, and Richie read Isa 9:6 where “Unto us a Son is given.” Now this was really a wonderful gift that you “got.”

Notice some things about it:

1. It was an appropriate gift (proper – fitting – becoming – suitable). The best gift for the best holiday. It just fit the occasion (it’s no accident that He is called the “Prince of Peace.” ill. soldiers laying down guns).

2. It was a satisfying gift, it never disappoints (child who got books for Christmas).

3. It was an expensive gift (what else could have cost any more?).

4. It was a lasting gift (toys worn out before the day is over, etc.) “Lo, I am with you always.

5. It was a gift that cannot be stolen (Widow’s presents stolen).

It’s the one gift that was “Just what I needed.”

WHAT WENT WRONG WITH CHRISTMAS?

This is the time of year when everyone should be singing Christmas songs, anticipating Christmas joy, and smiling about the decorations that fill our land. Instead, people are pushing and shoving at the mall, longing for Christmas to finally be over, and fearing that the next lights we see will be bombs instead of bulbs.

How did we move from Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men (Luke 2:14) to “Gloom, despair, and agony on me!” How did Christmas become such a hassle?

There are no Simple answers but I think the answer can be found in 2 basic problems we face at Christmas. After I expose these problems I want us to see the way back to Christmas the way God intended.

I. LOST OF CONTROL: The key word at Christmas anymore is “Lost of Control”. We’ve allowed things to get so far out of control in our life until now we have to endure Christmas instead of enjoy it. This lost of Control is evident in our:

A> GIFTS: Christmas shopping is a dreaded job instead of an anticipated joy because we have to spend money we don’t have to buy presents we don’t like to give to people who don’t need them anyway! Kids don’t care about the Love in your gift; they want to know how much loot it cost!

Everyone spends more than they can afford but rather than seek control we take a second job or go into debt that will control our lives until July! And we wonder why we don’t enjoy Christmas!!

B> GOVERNMENT: It’s not just gifts that we’ve lost control over, however. It’s a government that can’t control itself or its spending. In utter frustration we watch as the Government ploughs ahead like a bull in a china shop cleaning out our pocket book and demanding our sons and husbands to offer on the altar of war.

Most people are so frustrated anymore until Honest people won’t run for office and citizens are too apathetic to vote for the crooks that do run. No wonder Christmas is gloom instead of Glory.

C> GHOSTS: of Christmas Past when we used to enjoy the candy and fruit and now all we can do is quarrel at our kids cause they don’t. We somehow want to go back to the time of slower days and easier ways while at the same time retaining all the “things” we’ve grown so accustomed to. We’re not happy where we’re at and we wouldn’t be happy where we want to be!

If you think this sounds like Christmas has really “gone to pot” let me remind you about that first Christmas-

GIFTS: there were none (The wise men came as much as 2 years after Jesus was born!). Joseph was unemployed and had to move a pregnant wife to a new town in order to sign up to pay more taxes!!

GOVERNMENT: Rome ruled the world with an iron fist. Might made right and Rome had all the Might.

GHOSTS: The Priests taught in the temple about the glory days gone by but it had been over 400 years since God had even sent a Prophet to Israel. The Past seemed to be Past and now it appeared to be every man for himself.

Let’s see what Christmas is really about:

I. GOD’S POWER- …there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God (Rom 13:1). You can’t control the Government but He can. You may not understand all He’s doing but you can rest in His love and ability– For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isa 9:6)

II. GOD’S PERSON- God doesn’t expect you to give Him a gift you can’t afford; instead, He reminds you that the reason for the season is that HE became a Gift for us. Christmas is not all the “things” we put into it; it’s the birthday of the Son of God who came to earth to live and die as a man in order to redeem mankind- the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth (John 1:14) in order that as many as received him, would receive power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:12-13).

III. GOD’S PARDON- God wants to make you a New Creature in Christ Jesus. He gives a new birth, a new Character, and a new purpose to life. The only “Ghosts” you have to live with is the Holy Ghost!!

Accept Christ as your Savior this Christmas and find the joy you’ve been looking for.

WHY INNKEEPERS NEED A MESSIAH

One of the most vilified characters in the Bible is the Bethlehem Inn Keeper. Yet he is never mentioned in Scripture! The reference that people use to build their arguments about him is (Luke 2:7) And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

From that small phrase there was no room for them in the inn we have conjured a picture of a ruthless, money grabbing scrooge of an innkeeper who had no heart nor pity. That may be the case; but just as likely it’s not. Maybe the innkeeper was simply a normal human being just like you and I.

We are going to mothers to eat lunch today and give our presents. My wifes main concerns are the food and the presents. That does not make her heartless or un-Christian; simply practical. Many of the ladies in this church today want the main point of my sermon to be SHORT so you can get back and do all the things you have to get done today. Like the innkeeper, you are not anti-god as much as so busy until God will have to take care of Himself for awhile so you can do what you have to do!

1. HOLINESS: One of the most troubling things to leaders at Christian colleges today is that many of the Christian Leaders among the students also openly live with someone without being married- and dont see the disconnect between what they teach in Bible Study and what they live at home!

Many Church members amen sermons on holy living but then go home and faithfully watch Friends each week based on the people who sleep with as many people as possible. Raised in that environment, many young people have lost their vision of true holiness; and now wander thru life seeking to fill that big empty space in their heart with drugs, possessions, or sex- seeking rest and finding none.

Innkeepers need a God who is able to change their life as well as their eternal destination. That means he must be more than a set of rules and guidelines; he must be able to really understand my needs and temptations and give me some real help.

The baby born in the stable because there was no room at the inn is the answer you are looking for today.

– The Mystery of His Birth-

Told about for centuries before it actually happened

Born of a virgin via a spiritual conception. God became a man but still remained God.

– The Meaning of His Birth:

To show Gods Love: (1 John 4:9) In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

To Connect with Humans- He lived as a man suffering hunger, persecution, family problems, etc. so now we have a great high priest praying with us who knows the needs of our heart.

To pay the debt for sin that you could not pay.

Are you an Innkeeper today? So busy with life until you have no room for God. During a Christmas Play a young boy was playing the part of the Innkeeper. When Mary and Joseph came to his door he got his lines mixed up and said, There is no room in the inn but you can have my room if you want it! That is what God is asking today, Can He move in with you so He can change your life for good and forever.

2. PERSECUTION: America was founded on the need to escape the religious persecution in Europe. People came to America in order to have religious freedom- and now that very freedom has become a strait jacket that increasingly limits the rights of Christians to express their faith in public. Religious persecution is increasingly becoming a part of the Christian experience- remember the 3 converts in Nepal who had to be willing to leave family, friends, and home when they professed faith in Christ.

Innkeepers need a Messiah who is loved so much until they are willing to suffer and die for Him

WHY WE CALL HIS NAME JESUS

The primary reason we call His Name Jesus is because God TOLD US TO: And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).

It is interesting to note throughout the Bible the importance God puts on naming people (The first person we find a reason for their name is Eve‑ Gen 3:20 and Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living . Interestingly enough Adam was not “Named”; his name simply means “The Man” and is the term that God used for him.

After that, most people’s name describes something about:

a Characteristic: Gen 25:25 and the first came out red, all over like a hairy garment; and they called his name Esau

Their Conception‑ Seth means “Substituted” for Abel, Gen 4:25

Their Circumstances‑ Moses means “Drawn out” of the water Ex 2:10.

Many times God renames a person after that person comes to Him. Here are some examples:

1. Abraham‑ Gen 17:5 neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. Abram simply means “exalted father” while Abraham= “Father of a great multitude”

2. Sarah‑ Gen 17:15 and God said unto Abraham, as for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai (Dominative) but Sarah (Princess) shall her name be.

3. Israel‑ Gen 32:28 and he said, thy name shall be called no more Jacob (Deceiver), but Israel (Prince of God): for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

4. Peter‑ John 1:42 and he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, thou are Simon the son of Jona: thou shall be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, a stone (Peter).

In fact, We will get a “New Name” in Heaven: To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it (Revelation 2:17).

On Several occasions God named a Child before he was born:

1. Isaac‑ Gen 17:19 and god said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac:… (Laughter)

2. John the Baptist‑ Luke 1:13 and the angel said unto him, fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John

Today we want to look at the one who was marvelously announced by the Angels and see the importance of His Wonderful Name.

I. HIS NAME AS KING: Is 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called wonderful (Worship), counsellor (Wisdom), the mighty god (Power), the everlasting father (Permanent), the prince of peace (Peace). We can have Confidence, Reliance, and Faith in Him to do right.

II. HIS NAME AS SAVIOUR‑ Matt 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins. Jesus is the same as “Joshua” and as such describes how Jesus leads us from the Wilderness of Sin into the Promised Land (Eventually Heaven‑ but this is simply a land of Possibilities. Christ gives us ETERNAL Life and ABUNDANT Life; not “pie in the sky” promises but practical help in becoming what God intended us to be here so we will be ready for the hereafter).

III. HIS NAME AS MAN‑ Matt 1:23 behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Jesus said he that hath seen me hath seen the father John 14:9. [A little Girl was drawing on the beach when a man came by. “What are you drawing?” he asked. “A picture of God.” she replied. “But no one knows what God looks like.” the man said. “Wait 5 more minutes and you will.” the girl replied!!]. Because Christ came to the Earth, We are now able to see how God would act under our circumstances; dealing with Temptation, Hunger, family problems, etc.

IV. HIS NAME AS GOD‑ Phil 2:9‑11 wherefore god also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. You will confess that Christ is Lord and Savior‑ The difference is in when you do it: Now when it means eternal life, or later; just before you are cast into the Lake of Fire.
