Proverb- A brief saying in the stead of many words (Pro= for Verba=words)

The purpose of Proverbs is not to explain a matter but to express a Principle. It is done in such a way as to make it easier to remember than to forget.

The Book is divided into 3 parts: (Each part begins with “The Proverbs of Solomon”. NOTE: there is some question about chapters 30 and 31. We will deal with that when we come to those chapters in our study.)

BASIC OUTLINE OF THE BOOK

Chapter 1 9 Wisdom shows us the contrast between good and evil

Chapter 10 24 The ways of the Wise and Foolish are contrasted.

Chapter 25 31 Practical guidelines for Home, Social, and Business life are given.

THERE ARE 5 BASIC TYPES OF PROVERBS;

1. Completive “And” Commit thy works unto the Lord

(Prov 16:3) AND thy thoughts shall be established

2. Comparative “Than” Better is a little with righteousness

(Prov 16:8) THAN great revenues without right

3. Contrastive “But” A merry heart doeth good like a medicine (Prov 17:22) BUT a broken spirit drieth the bones

4. Character study- The Fool, The Wise, The Simple, etc.

5. Constructive- Principles to Build and Guide your life

Prov 18:13 He that answereth a matter before he hearth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

Prov 18:22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.

PROVERBS PONDERING

Who kills strong men and has a house on the way to hell? Prov 7:26-27 Woman dressed as a harlot

Who Invites guests into the depths of hell? Prov 9:15-18 A foolish gossiping woman

Who said they would make fun of you when fear came to visit? Prov 1:20-26 Wisdom

SOLOMON GIVES 6 REASONS FOR WRITING PROVERBS IN PROV. 1:1 6:

TO KNOW wisdom and instruction;

TO PERCEIVE the words of understanding;

TO RECEIVE the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgement, and equity;

TO GIVE subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

TO INCREASE LEARNING: A wise man will hear, and will INCREASE LEARNING; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels;

TO UNDERSTAND a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

There are 31 chapters in Proverbs. One for each day of the month. Begin each day by using a chapter to guide you and inspire you.

When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee Prov 2:10 11

Prov 01.2 6 PURPOSE OF PROVERBS

Solitary meditation has always been an integral part of Christianity (Ps 1:2). When Christians fail to emphasize this part of our faith, we should not be surprised if the Eastern religions rush in to fill the gap which results when we adhere to the cult of Martha while ignoring the good example of Mary (Luke 10:38-42). We would all be better Christians if we made a daily practice of thinking, alone, about our faith (How do we really Love God with all our Heart, mind, etc??)

The book of Proverbs is a God-given aid to meditation. Great thoughts are expressed in concise easy to remember form. Take a thought a day and meditate on it all during the day.

Proverbs is a book for the family. To be sure it contains counsel for the king, the soldier, the merchants, the banker, and a lot of other important people, but most of its wisdom is directed to the family. Here you find relatively little about affairs of state, as in the prophetical writings, and few theological perplexities that fill the rest of the Bible. Instead, you find page after page of practical, down-to-earth principles of daily life that have been tested and proved to be gold.

Since the Bible deals with the deepest of all matters, the relationship between God and humanity, you would expect to encounter many difficulties in its pages. But Proverbs is easy to read; the difficulty is living what we read. Part of the Bible requires much background in history and social customs, not Proverbs. Most of the book might have been written yesterday by a friend living just around the corner. You don’t find all the wonder and mystery of Christian Faith in Proverbs, but the sage counsel of this book will help you immeasurably in being a Christian.

Proverbs is gloriously old-fashioned. It lays heavy stress on hard work, thrift, sobriety, chastity, discipline, and reverence, all of which are in considerable disrepute today. But Proverbs bubbles over with something that seems to be missing from the lives of those who scoff at these old-fashioned virtues; Proverbs is filled with hope, laughter, song, loyalty, and stability. The theme of the book is expressed in one sentence: “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths’ (3:6)

SOLOMON GIVES 6 REASONS FOR WRITING PROVERBS IN PROV. 1:2 6:

TO KNOW wisdom and instruction;

TO PERCEIVE the words of understanding;

TO RECEIVE the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgement, and equity;

TO GIVE subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

A wide man will hear, and will INCREASE LEARNING; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels;

TO UNDERSTAND a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

NIV- 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;

3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;

4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young

5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance

6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.

Prov 01.7 FEAR AND THE FOOL

Prov 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. People won’t turn from sin until they begin to fear its consequences.

This is the FIRST Proverb in the book of Proverbs; that should give it some added significance. It is a contrast between those who Fear the Lord and the Foolish who neglect God and His instruction for life (In our terms today; a contrast between those who have faith in God [Saved] and those who go their own way [lost]).

Before we get to the “spiritual” meaning, let’s see the plain common sense of the verse. We need to be sure we understand what the words mean, and what they would say, under normal circumstances.

The Fear of the Lord= Reverence and Respect for God. (See more about this below)

The Beginning of Knowledge=

(1) “Beginning” means this is a starting place. There is something beyond this but this is where you “get on the road”.

(2) Knowledge= Revelation about God. Man’s Wisdom is man’s Reasoning. Spiritual wisdom is God’s revelation of Himself thru Nature (The stars declare His Glory), Conscience (Rom 2:15), His Word (Preached and read), and, the ultimate revelation, His Son, Jesus.

The problem today is that people are taught to reason ABOUT Life instead of learning the reason FOR Life.

Fools= Probably the best definition is found in Prov 28:26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. We will talk a lot about this type person as we explore Proverbs but, basically, a fool is someone who follows the desires and impulses of the flesh instead of God.

Despise wisdom and Instruction= They are unwilling to accept the fact that THEY have sinned and THEY need help (See it is sinners who sit in Church week after week and yet are going to Hell because they are unwilling to admit they’re lost and need Christ to save them).

It’s easy to see ignorance in “rednecks” who rejoice in their ignorance (“Education makes you Uppity”) [Equal to sinner who declare they don’t need to learn about God because they’re happy following the desires of the flesh]. It’s less apparent in Colleges and schools; until you look beyond the degrees into the poverty of morals and meaning to life they impart. Never have we had more education; or more sin!!! [Equal to people who attend Church but never accept God’s pardon or apply Scriptural principles to life].

NOTE- It is interesting to note that “Instruction” is a word that is sometimes used for “Chastisement”. The idea being that Instruction brings Discipline into life. It could also point to the fact that it is foolish for Christians to ignore the Chastisement God brings into their life; or to focus on the Punishment, instead of the instruction it is supposed to bring.

The Spiritual Meaning of the verse is very apparent. Reverence, Respect, and Awe of God are the first step toward finding meaning to life; and preparing for death. The Foolish man, on the other hand, disregards the many ways that God uses to attempt to show him the right way. This brings about death and disaster.

The Application is simple. Are you one of those who Fear God or Foolishly disregard Him??? Well, which are you???

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON “The Fear of the Lord” as the basis for the Beginning of Knowledge.

Fear is a good word here because it describes one of the greatest motivating forces in a person’s life. Fear will cause you to do things when everything else fails- if you don’t believe it try persuading a 3 year old to go to bed without resorting to a threat to do something to, or take something from, them!!

So the verse is saying that the “Principle Driving force” in a person’s life should be to please and follow God. It goes on to say that a “Fool” is someone who disrespect the precepts and principles that God expects us to live by.

This “fear of God” is a missing ingredient today. People treat God, and His Word, like dirt. Christians neglect the Bible, Regularly miss Church services (And even when they attend they turn off Church services like changing channels from a detective show to a comedy. Watch them, About dead during service but laughing and having a wonderful time once it’s dismissed), and assume that God will let them get by with almost anything. Nothing is a sin anymore; and, even if it is, God is too soft to ever punish us if we do wrong. So Christians live like, talk like, and act like the world; with the assumption that Heaven and all its rewards anxiously await them. What will they do when they come face to face with a God of pure Holiness??

Sinners see that Christians do not fear God so they don’t either. Why should they fear the consequences of living in sin when Christians tell them by actions and attitude that disregarding God’s teachings about sin is really the best way?? Why should they give up their fun, finances, and free time to serve God when a preacher will find a way to preach them into Heaven when they die, anyway!!

Most people don’t mind Trusting in Christ as long as they don’t have to Turn from Sin!!!

A great preacher once said that the best way to preach but never get converts was to preach about sin but never name any!! I think another way is to preach about Trusting in Christ without ever telling people why they should turn from sin. Almost everyone I talk to believes in God, They just don’t expect to be punished for sin in this life; or in the next, so they have no motivation to change.

Once people Fear God then knowledge will begin. They will see the awfulness of sin. Then they will see how worthless their works and efforts are to satisfy such a Holy God. Then, Praise God, they will easily be drawn to our wonderful Savior.

Fear will lead to Faith which will ultimately lead to Fidelity. I thought I was going to Hell. The preacher said God loved me and Christ would save me. I repented of my sins and put my trust in the saving Grace of God. Now I grow to Love the Lord more and more each day.

But Fear was the beginning of this Knowledge.

Prov 01.20 33 GET SMART

Proverbs 1:20 33 Wisdom is saying that because “She” cried and men would not hear then when they cry she will not hear. Prov 1:23 Turn ye at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

Get Wisdom but be wise about Wisdom:

1) Education is not necessarily Edification: II Tim 3:7 Ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the Truth.

2) Wisdom can make you smart; it cannot make you God: I Cor 1:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

3) Changing a mind is not the same as changing a Heart: I Cor 2:4 5 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

4) Real Wisdom comes from Relationship with Christ Act 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and preceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. I Cor 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom,…

5) Wise Wisdom does not just change what you think; it changes how you Live: James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Prov 04.14 27 LIFE’S PATHWAY

It’s important to know where you’re going! You need to know your destination (Heaven) and how to get there (The Bible is your road map). You may not know all the details but you need to know enough to “Check up on your course” from time to time so you’ll know you’re going the right way. (When a person is giving directions they normally tell you about some objects along the way as reference points. When someone travels Life’s Pathway with God you can look for some “reference Points” in their life- The Fruit of the Spirit [Matt 7:16, John 15:1 5, and Gal 5:22 23] and a desire to learn more about Christ [Phil 3:14]).

I. FIND OUT WHICH PATH TO TAKE 14 19

1) The Way of the Wicked 14 17, 19

A) The Wrong Way- “Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away”. It is the Broad way that leads to destruction (Matt 7:13).

B) The Dark Way- You’ll stumble thru life without help or hope.

2) The Path of the Just 18

A) The Way of Light- Jesus is the Light and we are to be lights (Matt 5:14). We don’t stumble in the dark because the Lord lights our path- “The Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path”

B) The Way of Growth- “That shineth more and more unto the perfect day”. The Lord shows us one step at a time; when we take that step then He shows us the next one.

II. GOOD ADVICE FOR WALKING THIS PATH 20 27

1. GET WISDOM- PRO 4:20 22 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. [Read the Map!!]

A) Listen to those God sends to instruct you- Pastor, Teacher, Parents.

B) Don’t just learn Wisdom; Practice it!! (Don’t be like someone who reads the map never takes a trip!)

2. KEEP YOUR HEART- PRO 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. If you don’t take care of your “Car” it will break down and leave you stranded

A) Backsliding begins in the Heart Prov 14:14

B) Evil thoughts, Evil talk, etc comes from the Heart Matt 15:19

3. WATCH YOUR MOUTH- PRO 4:24 Put away from thee a forward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. When you break God’s “Law of the Lips” you get a “Ticket” [We give account for idle words to God- Matt 12:37].

4. KEEP YOUR GOAL IN SIGHT- PRO 4:25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

Keep your eyes on the road. Watching the people beside the road might lead you to a wreck

5. THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE GOING- PRO 4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

A) Don’t get turned around by feelings. (Many times it doesn’t feel like you’re going “North” but you trust the signs)

B) The longer you travel and see that the map is accurate the more you depend on it. Don’t argue with a signpost.

6. DON’T GET DISTRACTED- PRO 4:27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

A) Be aware of “Short Cuts” that actually double your journey. (Abraham took a “Short Cut” and we still reap the consequences)

B) Don’t you before you reach your goal. We’re Pilgrims headed home

Prov 4:14-15 HOW LOSERS CAN WIN

Change your world and see it change the world around you!

Are you losing at life? Are you more familiar with stumbling than with success? Have you tried and failed so many times until you are tempted to quit trying? Here are some strategies that will help you “score touchdowns instead of fumble life’s ball”.

1. GUARD YOUR GOING– (Prov 4:14-15) Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. If you walk by the Devil’s house you will be invited in so change your “habit highways”.

2. TRANSFORM YOUR THINKING- (Rom 12:2) Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Garbage in; Garbage out. More time in God’s Book and less time in Facebook will change the thoughts that keep tripping you up.

3. EXERCISE SELF CONTROL– (1 Cor 9:27) But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. Ever notice how easy it is to overcome temptation when others are watching? Remember that! You CAN if you really want to.

4. RELY ON GOD’S HELP– (1 Cor 10:13) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. God wants you to win and God will provide a way for you to win. So stop being a whiner and start being a winner!

Prov 04.20 27 HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE

Life is a lot like a person about to take a trip in an automobile. You need to know where you’re going, what you’re doing, and what to avoid. Solomon gives us some of this kind of advice in this portion of Scripture.

1. GET WISDOM– PRO 4:20 22 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Listen to those who have made the journey ahead of you.

A) Listen to those God sends to instruct you- Pastor, Teacher, Parents.

B) Don’t just learn Wisdom; Practice it!! (Don’t be like someone who reads the map but never takes a trip!)

2. HEDGE YOUR HEART– PRO 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. If you don’t take care of your “Car” it will break down and leave you stranded.

A) Backsliding begins in the Heart. Prov 14:14

B) Evil thoughts, Evil talk, etc comes from the Heart Matt 15:19

3. WATCH YOUR MOUTH– PRO 4:24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

When you break God’s “Law of the Lips” you get a “Ticket” [We will give account for idle words to God- Matt 12:37].

4. DO NOT BECOME DISTRACTED – PRO 4:25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

Keep your eyes on the road. Watching the people beside the road might cause you to wreck!! Don’t be “window shopping in the World”.

5. THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE GOING– PRO 4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

A) Don’t get turned around by feelings. (Many times it doesn’t feel like you’re going “North” but you trust the signs)

B) The longer you travel and see that the map is accurate the more you depend on it. Don’t argue with a signpost. (God’s word does not always make “Sense” but it’s always right).

6. DO NOT BE DIVERTED FROM YOUR GOAL– PRO 4:27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

A) Be aware of “Short Cuts” that actually double your journey. (Abraham took a “Short Cut” and we still reap the consequences)

B) Don’t quit before you reach your goal. We’re Pilgrims headed home. Sometimes the journey gets long but it’ll be worth it all when we get to our destination.

You can’t make the Journey without a “Car”. You get it at Calvary. And it’s a great deal- God is giving them away!!!

Prov 05.21 PROVIDENTIAL PONDERINGS

THINGS GOD PONDERS:

1) The Actions of a Person: Prov 5:21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.

2) The Heart of a Person: Prov 21:2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

3) The Truth of a Person: Prov 24:12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

THINGS WE SHOULD PONDER:

1) Our Actions: Prov 4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

2) The Actions of Others: Luke 2:19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

3) Our Influence on the Actions of Others: Luke 2:51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

What does God think about the thoughts YOU are thinking?

Prov 06.16 19 THINGS THE LORD HATES

I. A Proud Look

Psalm 40:4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

Psalm 119:78 Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts.

Psalm 123:4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

II. A Lying Tongue

Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Genesis 27:24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.

III. Hands That Shed Innocent Blood

Deuteronomy 19:10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

I Samuel 19:5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the Lord wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

IV. A Heart That Deviseth Wicked Imaginations

Genesis 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Genesis 8:21 And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil form his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

Deuteronomy 31:21 And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.

V. Feet That Be Swift In Running To Mischief

I Samuel 23:9 And David knew that Saul secretly practiced mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.

Nehemiah 6:2 That Sanballat and Geswhem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.

VI. A False Witness That Speaketh Lies

Exodus 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Deuteronomy 19:16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; then both the men shall… stand before the Lord.

VII. He That Soweth Discord Among The Brethren

John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

John 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Prov 06.16-19 CONFRONTATION

[From “Confrontation” in Acts sermon] PRO 6:16-19 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

The 7 things God hates:

1. A Proud Look over estimation of Self, under estimation of others

2. A lying tongue

3. Hands that shed innocent blood If we fail to warn the sinful then their blood is upon our hands.

4. Heart that deviseth wicked imaginations You see what you want to see instead of what is so.

5. Feet that be swift in running to mischief desire to do wrong

6. A False witness that speaketh lies A witness is supposed to be someone who actually saw the incident. Instead they tell what they want instead of what is true

7. He that soweth discord among brethern “Letteth loose strife”

A practical illustration is to allow someone to hold the end of a ball of string and tell the main points about a story. He then tosses the Ball to someone else who tells what he remembers about the story. Holding the string he then tosses the ball to another who does the same thing. Soon there is a tangle of string between the people that must be cut instead of unraveled. So it is with Gossip.

It soon gets so tangled until unraveling becomes impossible and only the blood of Christ can change the situation.

How can we avoid Confrontation?

1. Put yourself in the other person’s “Shoes” Job 16:4 6 I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief. Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased?

2. Are you defending a Preference or a Principle? See I Cor 9:19 22 where Paul said he had become all things to all men to save some, and compare it to Gal 1:9 where Paul calls a curse on those who preach another Gospel.

3. Try to find where YOU are in relation to the Problem:

A) Are you IN the Problem (“Blinded” by the Pressure),

B) OUTSIDE the Problem (Where you’re either criticizing or comforting or callously ignoring it),

C) or simply “The” Problem!

Study the examples of Jesus about Confrontation: He didn’t confront the Samaritan woman about where to worship; He exposed her problem with husbands and pointed her to living water. That’s the way we need to learn to handle situations:

1) See the “Root” of the Problem instead of the Fruit.

2) Try to help the situation instead of make it worst.

Are you trying to Change people into what YOU want, trying to Control them so they will fit your plans, or are you simply criticizing others because you’re too lazy or loveless to get involved.

Don’t be a “Confronter”; be a “Christian”.

Proverbs 7:1-3 FINGERS

My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart (Proverbs 7:1-3). Fingers can be so busy texting, typing, and tuning until they miss the Truth!

Fingers are fabulous. They are proportional (your nose and ear is the distance from the end of your thumb to the top of your first finger [Every face is “Supposed” to be 3 noses high and 3 eyes wide (Cross)]. Your first finger is the distance from your eye to Half your Brain! Your height is the distance from the tips of your finger when arms outstretched.

and productive (they can press something, play something, or portray something [The first finger is used to proclaim victory (#1). The second passes insults (ask your teenage son!). The third is for possession (wedding rings). And the fourth is the promise finger (Pinky pledge)].

We serve a Great God who only needs a Finger to:

  • Make the World: When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? Psalms 8:3-4.
  • Give Life Guidelines (Ten Commandments) (And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God Exodus 31:18).
  • C:\Users\Mike Jones\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.Word\HANCLOUD.JPGCondemn wrong Actions: The writing on the wall declaring God’s judgment on Belshazzar in Daniel 5. It is called the “fingers of a Man’s Hand” but Daniel proclaimed it came from God. (Thou hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified: Then was the part of the hand sent from him (God); and this writing was written (Daniel 5:23-24).

C:\Users\Mike Jones\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.Word\ICHR2001.jpg We serve a Risen Savior, Jesus Christ, who used a Simple Finger to:

  • Cast out demons (But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you Luke 11:20)
  • Heal diseases (And he … put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; Mark 7:33)
  • Expose hypocrites (This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not John 8:6).

We are grateful for God’s “finger work” but we should never demand “Finger Faith” (The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe John 20:25) or one day you may long for a “finger” (And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame Luke 16:24). That is a prayer I pray you never have to make!

Prov 08.32-36 WISDOM’S WEALTH

Prov 8:32-36 Now then, my sons, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it. Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the LORD. But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death.

I. WISDOM WILL GUARD YOU- (P616) Prov 2:10-15 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.

A) Ways of Wicked Men-

1. Whose Words are Perverse (Perverted). Speak one thing and mean another.

2. Who walk in Dark ways- Hide what they do. Afraid of exposure.

3. Who delight in doing wrong. Derive Pleasure from sinful activities- Active or spectators.

4. Who are devious in their doing. Can’t be Trusted

B) Woes of Wayward Women- Destroy Righteousness, Reputation, Health, and Careers (Marrying out of God’s Plan).

II. WISDOM WILL GUIDE YOU- Prov 2:20-22 Thus you will walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous. For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it.

A) In Career decision- Remember, you are more interested in making a LIFE Than you are in making a LIVING.

B) In Conscience Decisions- The world is trying to make Man his own God. Decisions are based on what is “Good” for individual men. You must learn to have standards based on GOD’S WORD. Circumstances will change but God’s Standards will not.

III. WISDOM WILL GROW YOU- Prov 3:13-18 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed. Reach Further, Climb Higher. Never be satisfied with less that the Best God has given you the ability to attain.

Finally, Remember that Real Wisdom comes from God. 1 Cor 1:19-21 For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate. Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

Are You willing to face God as you are right now?? Are you depending on your Abilities or your Faith in God??

Prov 10.18 CHARACTERISTICS OF FOOLS

The Bible declares that I am not to call a man a fool (Matt 5:22) so I am simply going to list 9 characteristics of a fool and let you “judge a tree by the fruit it bears” (Matt 7:20).

1) Walk a Wicked Way with no regard for God- The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. (Psalms 53:1)

2) Slander Other- He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool. (Proverbs 10:18)

3) Mock at Sin- Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour. (Proverbs 14:9)

4) Despise Instruction- A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent. (Proverbs 15:5)

5) Contentious- A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. (Proverbs 18:6)

6) Meddlesome- It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. (Proverbs 20:3)

7) Self Confident- He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. (Proverbs 28:26)

8) Dishonest- As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool. (Jeremiah 17:11)

9) Hypocrite- And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? (Luke 11:39-40)

The good news is that “fools” can stop acting foolishly by becoming a follower of Jesus Christ.

Prov 10.22 HOW TO BE RICH

Prov 10:22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

This is RICHES TOWARD GOD: Luke 12:21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God–Spiritual Riches versus Physical Riches.

These riches are to be LAID UP IN HEAVEN; not on earth- Mat 6:20-21 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

A Good Example of the two kinds of Riches is the way Christ looked at two Churches in Revelation:

POOR YET RICH: Rev 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

RICH YET POOR: Rev 3:17-18 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: {18} I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

GOD IS THE SOURCE OF OUR RICHES: Rom 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

CHRIST IS THE PROVIDER OF OUR RICHES: 2 Cor 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

FAITH IS THE KEY TO THESE RICHES: James 2:5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

1. LOOK FOR RICHES IN THE RIGHT PLACE- God’s Will for your life instead of accumulating Worldly goods. Eccl 5:10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.

2. LOOK FOR RICHES BY THE RIGHT METHOD- Claiming Christ’s Promises and resting in Christ’s Provisions. Eccl 4:6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

3. EXPECT TO ENJOY THE RICHES GOD GIVES- The Abundant life is not free from thorns and trials; it just has some wonderful roses among those thorns. Eccl 5:18-19 Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

1 Tim 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;.

Prov 11.1 GUIDELINES FOR BUSINESS, DEBT, AND LABOR

I. GUIDELINES FOR BUSINESS DEALINGS

A) Honest Measurements are required. Prov 11:1 A false Balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.

1. The use of different weights and measurements between buying and selling is an abomination to the Lord. Prov 20:10,23

2. Use a good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over in your dealings. For with the same measure that ye mete it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:30

B) Develop your business before you try to live off the Profits. Prov. 24:27 Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the fields; and afterwards build thine house. (He who seeks to start off as an executive had better be the boss’s son! Jones 15:4).The dictionary is the only place you will find SUCCESS before WORK.

C) Keep a watchful eye on your Business- Prov 27:23 24 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation? When you neglect your business the “weeds begin to grow and the roof begins to rot” (See Prov 24:30 34). There is no business that will run itself long without jumping off the tracks.

II. GUIDELINES FOR DEBT (Surety)

A) Stay away from Debt Prov 22:7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

Prov 17:18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friends. Rom 13:8 Owe no man anything, but to love one another.

B) Especially stay away from signing someone else’s note. 6:1 5

1. You may get hurt Prov 11:15

2. You may “Lose your shirt” 22:26 27

3. If you must sign get good collateral 20:16 27:13

C) If you owe someone, be sure to pay them when due. Prov 3:27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hands to do it.

Lev 19:13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbor, neither rob him; the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

Deut 24:14 15 Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethern, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: at his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it, lest he cry against thee unto the Lord; and it be sin unto thee.

James 5:4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud crieth; and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

If you owe someone something then you should pay that debt, if possible. If you cannot pay then be man enough to go to the person and make some kind of arrangements.

III. GUIDELINES FOR WORK- The man who is waiting for something to turn up would do well to start with his own shirt-sleeves.

A) Poverty and laziness go hand in hand. Prov 10:4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. You should learn from the Ant (6;6 11):

1. Able to work without someone telling them everything to do. 7

2. Works when it is time to work vs 8

3. Realizes that a little Laziness grows into a lot of Laziness until you lose everything as if it were stolen vs 9 11

B) God will not let a good man starve to death- Prov 10:3 The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

1. You are not supposed to help those who can work and won’t do so- II Thess 3:10 12

2. Christian Faith means helping those who need it- James 2:14-16

God gives the birds their food; but HE DOESN’T THROW IT INTO THEIR NESTS!!

C) There are 2 types of people listed:

1. The Diligent:

a. Produces a Profit Prov 10:4

b. Advances to a leadership role 12:24 22:29

c. Doesn’t waste anything 12:27

d. Has a sense of Satisfaction 13:4

e. Uses his brain as well as his brawn 21:5

f. Keeps an eye on his responsibilities 27:23

2. The Sluggard/Slothful:

a. Is Lazy 6:9 11

b. Is a pain to his employer- like smoke in the eye or vinegar that sets his teeth on edge 10:26

c. Wants 13:4

d. But isn’t willing to work for what he wants 20:4

e. Is always ready with an excuse 26:13 16

1) We might run into trouble vs 13

2) I can’t make up my mind vs 14

3) It’s not worth the effort vs 15

4) Stubborn once he makes the excuse vs 16 (And generally spends more effort making and defending his excuse than he would in doing the work!!!).

f. Faces a Difficult Way (15:19), a Wasteful Way (18:9), and a Bad End (21:25)

A stranger came to three workman, all employed on the same job. He asked each worker what he was doing. Growled the first man, “I’m breaking rocks.” Said the second, “I’m earning a living.” But the Third man replied with a smile, “I’m building a cathedral.”

Prov 12.21 CIRCUMSTANCES

If I asked you today if you believed the Bible was the Word of God I believe most of you would readily say “YES”. Now let’s look at our text verse and see if you still believe that: There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief. (Prov 12:21). That simply doesn’t seem to be the case. It seems more and more that the Wicked are blessed and the righteous suffer. Why is this? What really determines a man’s circumstances?

1> Some circumstances happen to people irregardless of their:

A) Intellect- The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all. Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity. (Eccl 2:14-15)

B) Relationship to the Lord- There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity. (Eccl 8:14)

C) Ability- I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. (Eccl 9:11)

2> Some Circumstances happen in our live to teach other people:

A) The Events in Israel- Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. (1 Cor 10:11)

B) The Events in Paul’s Life- But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; (Phil 1:12)

3> Some Circumstances are a trial from Satan: Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: (1 Pet 4:12)

4> Some Circumstances happen because of Sin: Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day. (Jer 44:23)

The thing to remember is that God uses these Circumstances to Shape us into the Vessel we’re supposed to be. The Sculptor hammers at the stone not to harm it, but to make it into a thing of beauty. It was persecution that drove the early church from the “safety” of the “nest” at Jerusalem to spread the Gospel around the world (Acts 8:1). It is the file, and not the feather, that sharpens the axe!!

Heb 5:8 Though he were a son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.

Ps 119:71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statues.

Remember also that Hell doesn’t just “Happen”. It comes to those who refuse to accept Christ as Savior. Don’t ease your way into destruction. Accept Christ today

Prov 14.23 LABORING

I. WORK IS COMMANDED OF GOD- Gen 3:19 In the sweat of they face shalt thou eat bread, til thou return unto the ground: for out of it were thou taken, for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

II Thess 3:12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

Pr 14:23 In all labor there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

II. WORLDLY WORKS WILL NOT SATISFY- Ecc 2:11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

Is 55:2 Wherefore do you spend money for that which is not bread: and your labor for that which satisfieth not? When goods are increased they are increased that eat them- Haggai

Therefore you ought to Jn 6:27 Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you:

III. WHAT WORLDLY WORKS DO:

A) Demonstrate the reality of your faith- James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

B) Glorifies God- Matt 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven.

C) Enriches us- I Tim 6:18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate:

D) Furnishes a Pattern for others – Tit 2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works; in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

E) Causes others to work harder- Heb 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke to love and good works:

IV. WHAT WE NEED TO WORK AT-

A) Believing in Christ for Salvation- John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. You work BECAUSE you’re saved but salvation is (Ep 2:8-9) by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

B) Sharing Christ with the Lost- Matt 9:37-38 Then saith he unto his disciples, the harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.

LABOR:

Why are Weeds a Blessing? Gen 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake: in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

Why did God designate 6 days for work and only 1 day for rest? Prov 13:11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. Prov 14:23 In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

It is better to labor with someone than alone- Ecc 4:9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor. Matt 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

The Goal of your Labor should be to have Long Term Results: John 6:27 Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

I Cor 15:58 Therefore my beloved brethern, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Col 1:28-29 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

Your Labor should benefit others as well as yourself: Eph 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. I Thess 3:5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

It is not wrong to be recognized for your labor: I Tim 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

Sometimes you must labor in the Physical in order to impact the Spiritual: Tit 3:14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.

We should pray for others to join in laboring for the Lord: Matt 9:37-38 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Prov 16.2 MISTAKES PILGRIMS MAKE

1. Assuming you’re right because it looks right to you. 16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits. 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

2. Refusing to acknowledge your mistake 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

3. Claiming to be something you’re not 25:14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and winds without rain. 30:12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

4. Dwelling too much on your accomplishments 25:27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory. 27:2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. 26:12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? There is more hope of a fool than of him.

5. Giving Bad for Good 17:13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

6. Giving Bad for Bad 20:22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee. Rom 12:19 21 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him: if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. BE not overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.

7. Rejoicing at another’s misfortune 17:5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his maker; and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished. 24:17 18 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: lest the Lord see it, and it displeaseth him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

Prov 17:28 WHEN TO KEEP YOU MOUTH SHUT:

Sometimes the less said is the best said. But Jesus held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? (Mark 14:61).

  1. When you do not know the facts: He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him (Proverbs 18:13).
  2. When you have not had time to verify the rumor: Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him (Proverbs 29:20).
  3. When you will do harm instead of bring help: The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly (Proverbs 18:8).
  4. When your spirit says stay silent: He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit (Proverbs 17:27).
  5. When what you say could burn out of control: An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire (Proverbs 16:27). Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! (James 3:5).
  6. When controlled by anger, envy, or animosity: Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof (Proverbs 18:21).

Prov 21.23 SOUL TROUBLE

(Proverbs 21:23) Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

I. What is Soul Trouble?

A) Anguish over Sins in our life

B) Anguish over the Actions of Sinners in this life

C) Anguish over Sinners Coming Condemnation

II. What causes Soul Trouble?

A) Talk-Prov 21:23

1) Idle Words-Mt 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

2) Dishonest Words-(James 3:10) Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

3) Devouring Words-(James 5:14 15) Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

B) Sickness and Troubles-Ps 88:3 For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.

C) Having to deal with Sin and Satan-(John 12:27) Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

III. How can you cure Soul Trouble? Ps 143:11 Quicken me, O LORD, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.

Prov 22.6 PRESSURES IN RAISING CHILDREN

I. PARENT PRESSURE- 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

A) Train up a Child- The parent’s responsibility to instruct the child clearly about right and wrong is stated throughout

Proverbs- and the Bible. To Train means to develop a hunger. Are you developing a “Hunger” in your child for the right??

B) In the Way he should go-

1. He ought to know the difference between the Way of the Wicked and the Way of the Wise

2. In the way he should go: “In keeping with his individual gift” A Child is supposed to be developed according to the character and personality God has given HIM: God does not make robots. Parents should realize that and not try to make all their children the same. If your Child is taught to recognize and accept his personality and gifts then he can live a productive life all of his life.

C) When he is old he will not depart from it-

1. The Prodigal Son did in fact return to the Father (But we don’t want to train our children to Backslide!!)

2. If a child is taught to be what they’re supposed to be, they’ll never be really happy being anything else. They may try other things but it won’t work.

II. PEER PRESSURE- God makes you an individual but society tries to make you one of the herd (This does not negate your responsibility to others. The hand needs the body but the body is not all

hand!).

A) You take the characteristics of those around you- 27:19 As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man. You talk like those around you, eat similar food, wear similar clothes, etc. Be careful who you take as a role model! Who are your Heroes? (The Christian tries to conform to Christ- II Cor 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord).

B) Chose your companion with care-

1. They are to make you SHARP- 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

2. Some will SHAME your family- 28:7 Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son; but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.

3. Some will be a SNARE to you- 29:25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.

4. Bad Companions are a form of SUICIDE- 29:24 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not. Matt 7:13 14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate; and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Prov 23.7 YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee (Proverbs 23:7).

Your thoughts and opinions are developed by people who:

• Consider what the crowd thinks- people pleaser

• Control what the crowd thinks- media, music, message

• Condemn what the crowd thinks- Prophet, Preacher

• Convey what the crowd thinks- News, gossip

• Confound what the crowd thinks- rebel, different opinion

• Correct what the crowd thinks- Lessons from the Bible

This is why it is important to know that:

1. Thoughts can condemn you- Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (2 Corinthians 10:5).

2. Thoughts can control you- For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: (Proverbs 23:7). Commercials control what you buy because they repeat the same message over and over in your brain.

3. Thoughts can comfort you- Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee (Isaiah 26:3).

Regret, repentance (To change your mind about a sin), reflection (why we need to rest).

• Inside sins- Lust, covet, greed,

• Outside sins- Wrong seen by others

• Action Sins- Activities we do that are wrong

• Inaction sins- Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin (James 4:17).

• People Attitude sins- But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors (James 2:9).

• Personal sins- And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin (Romans 14:23).

That is why the Bible is so important to our lives.

Situational verse I Used: Speaks about a need at the moment- Susan Bone disease- He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken (Psalms 34:20).

Doctor supposed to give cancer results I used this verse for family: He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD (Psalms 112:7).

Prov 23:7 THE PRINCIPAL PRINCIPLES

There are many things a man needs to know and understand (Such as “you never really win an argument with your wife” or “sense does not make sense to a teen ager so there is little value in trying to make sense to them”). Here are seven things, however, that I believe are Principal Principles and need to be Guiding Landmarks in the life of a Christian Man.

You ARE what you BELIEVE- For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: (Proverbs 23:7).

What you BELIEVE determines how you LIVE: But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself (Daniel 1:8).

  1. Jesus called us to be Born Again; not just believe. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  2. To try to do the work of God without the Power of God is like trying to empty the ocean with a pitchfork; you will work yourself to death and never make a difference. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts (Zechariah 4:6). It is the Sword of the Spirit.
  3. You will never be great as long as you are satisfied being good. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath (Matthew 25:24-29). Lukewarm
  4. God wins but He is not “popular”. Mankind always chooses what they want over what God’s wants. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:24-26).
  5. Your Activities reveal your Feelings about God. The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes (Psalms 36:1).
  6. Faith maintains faith even when faith does not appear fruitful. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth (Hebrews 11:13).
  7. The “End” closes a chapter; not the bookAnd as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27).

Prov 24.12 WHAT DOES GOD THINK OF YOU?

If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works? (Proverbs 24:12).

Have you ever thought about thinking about what you think about? YOUR THOUGHTS:

1) Determine your character- For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: (Proverbs 23:7) For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: (Matthew 15:19).

2) Deceive your mind- For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself (Galatians 6:3). It is dangerous when spiritually blind people are blind to their blindness.

3) Control your relationships- Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; (1 Corinthians 13:5) Four Problems in Marriage

  1. Income- Amount of income, Application of Income, Authority of Income
  2. In-Laws-
  3. Intimacy- Sorrow can be endured alone but Joy must be shared
  4. Interest (Problems come when interest becomes divided or diminished).

4) Displaces God- Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (2 Corinthians 10:5). You question what God does and does not do and you believe you could run the world better than God!

Let me tell you what God really thinks:

1) God is smarter than you – O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep. (Psalms 92:5). For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD (Isaiah 55:8).

2) God thinks about ways to make life better for you: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end (Jer 29:11).

God calls you His:

• Flock- The Lord is my Shepherd

• Family- To as many as received Him to them gave He power to become sons of God

• Fortune- In my father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so

• Future- I go to prepare you a place and if I go I will come again to receive you that where I am there you may be also.

God’s Thoughts mean God is faithful to:

• His People-

• His Promises-

• His Plan-

• His Preservation-

• His Punishment-

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon (Isaiah 55:7).

Prov 25.8-28 TONGUE TAMERS

LEARN THE FACTS BEFORE YOU STATE THE CASE- Prov 25:8 10 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. 9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another: 10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

RECOGNIZE THE BEAUTY AND BLESSING OF PROPER WORDS-Prov 25:11 13 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. 12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. 13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.

FOLLOW UP ON YOUR PROMISES- Prov 25:14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

RECOGNIZE THE ABILITY OF WORDS, USE THEM CORRECTLY- Prov 25:15 17 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone. 16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. 17 Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour’s house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.

REMEMBER THE DESTRUCTIVE POWER OF WORDS- Prov 25:18 20 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. 19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint. 20 As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.

USE WORDS TO BUILD BRIDGES; NOT DESTROY PEOPLE- Prov 25:21 22 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: 22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

WORDS EFFECT RELATIONSHIPS- Prov 25:23 25

PRODUCES ANGER- VS 23 The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

DIVIDES FAMILIES- VS 24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

BUILDS RELATIONSHIPS- VS 25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

YOUR TALK WILL REVEAL YOUR CHARACTER- Prov 25:26 28

INTEGRITY- VS 26 A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

PRIDE- VS 27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

UNCONTROLLED ANGER- VS 28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Prov 25.28 TESTED COMMITMENT

Prov 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

I. The Purpose of Tested Commitment-

A) To Reveal our Weaknesses to Us. 4 Things to fight during Tested Commitment

1. Unreasonable- WHY. It doesn’t make sense

2. Untimely- WHY NOW. I’m trying hard now.

3. Unfair- WHY ME. Others seem to get by.

4. Unbearable- HOW

B) To Reveal God’s Faithfulness to Us.

C) To enable us to Grow as Christians- In our Love, In our Devotion. Abraham went a long way between “leave thy family” and “offer thy son”.

II. The Promise during Tested Commitment-

A) Control- I Cor 10:13

B) Companionship- I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.

III. The Perspective During Tested Commitment- God’s ways are not your ways and His thoughts are not your thoughts

IV. The Performance during Tested Commitment- You can’t escape the Test; you MUST ENDURE IT.

V. The Profit of Tested Commitment- Rom 8:28 Your good and God’s Glory.

Prov 27.1 Practical Philosophy for Pilgrims

  1. Do not ANTICIPATE Tomorrow’s TRIUMPHS-PRO 27:1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Luke 12:20 21 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided.
  2. Do not be ANXIOUS about tomorrow’s TROUBLES- Matt 6:34 Take no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficent unto the day is the evil therof.
  3. Beware of SELF EXALTATION- PRO 27:2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
  4. WORDS are often worse than WRATH: PRO 27:3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.
  5. Many who can control their TEMPER cannot control being TEMPTED: PRO 27:4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
  6. Be Truthful with your Tongue; others need to feel your true feelings: PRO 27:5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.
  7. Better to Hurt with a Friend than be Happy with an Enemy PRO 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
  8. Sometimes Hunger Helps: PRO 27:7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
  9. You cannot hatch eggs if you are not doing your duty: PRO 27:8 As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.
  10. As perfume covers small “Smells” so good counsel covers small mistakes: PRO 27:9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.
  11. Relationships are built as well as born: PRO 27:10 Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
  12. Fore warned enables us to be fore armed: PRO 27:11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me. PRO 27:12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
  13. Be cautious in dealing with strangers: PRO 27:13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
  14. Prudence is even better than Praise: PRO 27:14 He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.
  15. Sometimes Silence is golden: PRO 27:15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.
  16. It is difficult to help someone who does not want to be helped: PRO 27:16 Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself. Note the Amplified Bible on this verse- “Whoever attempts to restrain a contentious woman might as well try to stop the wind; his right hand encounters oil [and she slips through his fingers].
  17. Friendship improves both parts: PRO 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
  18. Greatest shall be servant of all: PRO 27:18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.
  19. Relationship brings reflection: PRO 27:19 As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.
  20. The “wanter” always wants: PRO 27:20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
  21. Praise is a trial: it will Refine you or Ruin you: PRO 27:21 As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.
  22. The foolishness of a fool is ingrained into him: PRO 27:22 Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.
  23. Be concerned for your responsibilities: PRO 27:23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.
  24. Fame is fleeing: PRO 27:24 For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?
  25. Everything has a time: PRO 27:25 The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.
  26. Everything has a place: PRO 27:26 The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.
  27. If you’ll use what God gives you’ll have what God wants you to have: PRO 27:27 And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.

Prov 27.23-24 WHEN MONEY DOES NOT MATTER

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation? (Prov 27:23-24).

Money has no worth: [When what you need to buy is not available- Disaster, Famine, hint of hurricane or snow storm- cannot buy milk and bread if the shelves are empty!]

a) When it is not your money- The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. (Prov 22:7)

b) When the Government ceases to back it- Johanna in Germany: men used wheel barrels to carry money to buy groceries. Viet Nam. One day Red money was good but the next day it was worthless and you could only use Blue money.

c) If Thieves steal it- Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: (Mat 6:19-20).

d) When Inflation Shrinks it- Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes (Hag 1:5-6). Dollar in India is now only worth 37 rupees instead of 47.

e) When it seeks to “buy” Righteousness- And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. (Mark 12:41-42)

f) When Death comes to our door- And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God (Luke 12:16-21). King of France, “I would trade my entire kingdom for 10 more minutes of time”.

1. Money can Betray You: Some will be caught up in unavoidable circumstances- I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. (Eccl 9:11) Violence, loss of job, etc.

2. Money can Corrupt You: Some will survive by resorting to sin- Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain (Prov 30:7-9).

3. Money can Abandon You: Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven (Prov 23:4-5). Bankruptcy

Realize that a relationship with the Lord is Life’s greatest treasure Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting (Gal 6:7-8).

Prov 28:26 THINGS GOD CALLS FOOLISH

[Goal of every message: Find God, Follow God, Fellowship with God] IT IS FOOLISH TO BELIEVE: -Everything on Facebook is true. -You can win an argument with your wife. -Newscasters are “fair and impartial”. -That if you pray your college team will win their game or you will win the lottery! -God’s rules apply to other people but you are “special” and God will make an exception for you.

GOD CALLS IT FOOLISH TO:

  1. SLANDER OR DEMEAN ANOTHER PERSON: Prov 10:18 He that uttereth a slander is a fool. God makes it plain that using a “superior attitude” to demean the intellect or abilities of a person is a bad thing- But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire (Matt 5:22).
  2. REFUSE TO LISTEN TO PARENTAL GUIDANCE: Prov 15:5 Fools despise his father’s instructions
  3. MEDDLE IN OTHER PEOPLE’S BUSINESS: Prov 20:3 Every fool will be meddling. It is always good to remember Proverbs 26:17- He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears. How do you let go of that Dog without getting bit!!
  4. LOOK LIKE, OR LUST AFTER, A “WICKED WOMAN”: Prov 7:22 A fool follows the way of wicked women. Looks like a duck, flies like a duck, quakes like a duck; may end up duck dinner!
  5. TRUST IN WORLDLY GOODS: Luke 12:20 When the rich man had decided to build bigger barns God said, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee and then whose will these be? Example of man who gave corpse check for all money! If you believe this why do you spend most of your time trying to make money instead of serving God???
  6. NOT KEEP A VOW TO GOD: Ecc 5:4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. There have been some foolish vows made in this world (Japhthah’s vow to sacrifice first out of house and it was his daughter Judges 11) but God expects men to honor their vows (The Rechabites faithfulness to their vow of not drinking or building houses used by God as example in Jer 35). Many people make a vow to God in sickness, trouble, or sorrow and then failed to follow thru– but God has not forgotten!!
  7. TRUST IN YOUR OWN HEART TO DELIVER YOU FROM SIN’S PUNISHMENT: Prov 28:26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked (Men can have Defiled Consciences and Seared Consciences- they better trust God’s Word instead of their feelings (Preacher, I feel like I’m alright. After all, I’m as good as most people). Even in matter of assurance- if our heart condemn us God is greater than our heart.
  8. TREAT THE POWER AND PENALTY OF SIN LIGHTLY: Prov 14:9 Fools make a mock at sin. Can a man take fire into his bosom and not be burned. Ex. of cowboy who asked, “Where is Hell” and died in ten feet when snake scared horse. Sin brings condemnation and consequences.
  9. NOT BELIEVE IN LIFE AFTER DEATH: Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body (1 Corinthians 15:36-38).
  10. SAY NO TO GOD: Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Others deny (say NO) to God’s call for SALVATION or SERVICE.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE FOOLISH. God has made it easy enough so that even a fool can find the way- Is 35:8 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

Prov 28.26 FOOLISH THINGS

None of us like to be embarrassed or thought of in a slighting way. Yet all of us have done foolish things in our life- stepping on a snake, whipped for climbing on barn top, etc.

There are a number of things that the Bible says are foolish:

Prov 10:18 He that uttereth a slander is a fool- Gossip

Prov 15:5 Fools despise his father’s instructions- Rebellion

Prov 20:3 Every fool will be meddling (Take a dog by the ear!!)

Prov 7:22 A fool follows the way of wicked women- Look like or lust after

I want us to look at 5 things that are foolish and that affect us now and in eternity.

I. IT IS FOOLISH TO TRUST IN YOUR OWN HEART- Prov 28:26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked (Who wants to trust a guide that lies to you and want’s his own way at your expense). If you try to walk out of the desert you’ll only end up walking in circles.

Men can have Defiled Consciences and Seared Consciences- they better trust God’s Word instead of their feelings (Preacher, I feel like I’m alright. After all, I’m as good as most people.).

Even in matter of assurance- if our heart condemn us God is greater than our heart.

II. IT IS FOOLISH TO TRUST IN WORLDLY GOODS- Luke 12:20 When the rich man had decided to build bigger barns God said, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee and then whose will these be? Example of man who gave corpse check for all the money in the casket! If you believe this why do you spend most of your time trying to make money instead of serving God???

III. IT IS FOOLISH TO NOT KEEP A VOW TO GOD- Ecc 5:4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. There have been some foolish vows made in this world (Japhthah’s vow to sacrifice first one out of house and it was his daughter Judges 11) but God expects men to honor their vows (The Rechabites faithfulness to their vow of not drinking or building houses used by God as example in Jer 35). Many a person has make a vow to God in sickness, trouble, or sorrow and then failed to follow thru– but God hasn’t forgotten!!!!

IV. IT IS FOOLISH TO TREAT SIN LIGHTLY- Prov 14:9 Fools make a mock at sin. Can a man take fire into his bosom and not be burned. Ex. of cowboy who asked, “Where is Hell” and died in ten feet when snake scared horse.

V. IT IS FOOLISH TO SAY NO TO GOD- Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.

Some say NO to SALVATION- Refuse the lifeline

Some say NO to SERVICE. God will never ask you to do anything that will hurt you.

You don’t have to be Foolish. God has made it easy enough so that even a fool can find the way- Is 35:8 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the Way of holiness; the unclean shall not past over.

Prov 29.1 REPEATED REJECTION

2 Chr 36:15 16 And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: 16 But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

Prov 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

Heb 3:7 11 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, 8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: 9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. 11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

THE RESULTS OF REJECTION:

1. Loss of ability to think clearly. Complete Captivity (Homosexuals, Judas). And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; (Romans 1:28).

2. Sudden Destruction (Annanias). And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified: (Daniel 5:22-23).

In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain (Daniel 5:30).

3. Hardened Hearts (Rich Young Ruler) That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them (John 12:38-40).

THE REASONS FOR REJECTION:

1. Refusal to Listen to and Live By God’s Word. Satan snatches it, crowds it out with weeds, resist it rocks

2. Hard Neck (Pride).

3. Hard Hearts, Callous Conscience.

THE KINDS OF REJECTION:

1. Rejected Sermons- Joab went to the Altar but it was too late for him (I Kings 2:)

2. Rejected Service- Refusing to do what you know God has called you to do.

3. Rejected Love- The Worst because it breaks God’s Heart. Chose Pleasure over God- You LIKE Sin / Rebellion against Parents- Prodigal

This message is about the most serious of subjects. If I offered a Poverty stricken man $1 million dollars and he refused it would be bad; if I tried to warn a family that their house was on fire and they ignored me that would be horrible; but if I proclaim the Gospel of Christ to you and You refuse to repent and believe then you face the worst fate known to man. I want us to look at that and see the Peril of Rejecting God in the Reproof, the Rejection, and the Results.

I. THE REPROOF “He, that being often reproved”

A) The Sinner “He” All have sinned and come short of God’s Glory (If you have never repented of Sin and trusted Christ as Savior then it’s you)

B) The Frequency of Reproof Repeated Reproof “Often” (Why should God give you 100 chances and multitudes of the world none???)

C) The Source of Reproof:

l. Preaching: Church, Radio, TV, Tape, Printed

2. Teaching: Church, Parents

3. Godly Living: Friends, Neighbors, Co workers

4. History: God’s Past Judgment (Belshazzar, This night)

5. Conscience: Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

II. THE REJECTION “Hardeneth his neck”

A) Pride Stiff neck refuses to humble before God (Namaan dip in Jordan). Refuse to take Yoke of Christ. The same sun that melts snow hardens concrete

B) The Peril Seared Conscience- A good conscience encourages you to do right and brothers you if you do wrong. But when the conscience becomes evil it does the opposite. Isa 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

The conscience is the window that lets in the light. As we continue in sin the window gets more and more dirty and less light comes in. A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE OF HOW THIS WORKS:

WE LIE TO OTHER PEOPLE: 1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

WE LIE TO OURSELVES: 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

WE LIE TO GOD: 1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Prov 29.1 THE SADDEST VERSE IN THE BIBLE

He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy (Proverbs 29:1).

We see three things here in this one verse:

I. A Righteous God Calling in Love “he that being often reproved:

a. in the area of Salvation

b. in the area of Faithfulness

c. in the area of Concern Isa. 1:18 “Come now let us reason together. Matt. 11:28 “Come unto me”

II. A Rebellious Reaction from People. It seems that we are living in a rebellious society, the Bible says in I Sam. 15:23 “rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft”.

III. A Result of Ruin “suddenly destroyed”

a. Many wait until they have gone too far

b. Some have shunned the Holy Spirit until he no longer speaks to them.

Prov 29.18 LIFE CHANGING VISION

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he (Proverbs 29:18).

There are several reasons people attend church or do something “religious”

1) Pacify a nagging mother

2) Relieve a Guilty Conscience

3) Seek something from God- Good feelings, Blessing, Healing

4) Academic interest in things of God- Ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

5) Committed to the Organization. Gives a sense of family and approval by society to attend the old family Church

To these people, Church is a chore that is bland and boring and they can=t wait to for service to dismiss so they can get on with life. Yet they long for something to really matter. Struggling thru life just to struggle thru life is a struggle. He who aims at nothing normally hits it. He who is satisfied just to be satisfied will never be satisfied with his satisfaction.

Wouldn’t it be great today if something happened to you that would motivate you in such a way until it changed your life!! That is exactly what happened to me on Monday, March 19, 1962. I repented of my sins, asked God to forgive me because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ in my place, and the Holy Spirit moved into my life and made me a new creature. Life has never been the same for me; or for those around me.

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. (Proverbs 29:18). The word “Vision” here comes from a word meaning “presenting of the law”. It really means hearing something (The Word of God) that motivates us to seek the source of Life, God. So the word “vision” really means “an inward drive that motivates you to do something”. Losing weight seems hard until Pride or Physical problems motivate us to eat less more! There are many things we cannot afford unless we really want them: It is much easier to get a man to go hunting at 5am than to get him to go shopping at 5am!!

What will enable you to be a successful Christian?

1. Commitment- Jim Bonham, lawyer from SC left Alamo to appeal to Colonel Fannin for help. Had 150 men in Alamo surrounded by over 2000 men from Santa Anna’s Army. Returned to Die.

2. Assurance that you are capable of handling the Situation- I can do all things thru Christ. Greater is He in me

3. Recognition of Rewards Awaiting you- I press toward the mark for the prize of the high call of God in Christ. Missionary to Salvador Brazil. 6 year old son with fever, reached out hand, “I’m reaching for Jesus’ hand” Coma- 2 days later died of bacterial meningitis.

1) Life mission (Dedication) Vision- Isaiah when Uzziah died

A) A vision of God=s Holiness and Power

B) A vision of your own sinfulness

C) A Vision of the World=s need

2) Life changing (Salvation) Vision- Paul on Road to Damascus

Three primary factors allowed Jesus to stare death down each morning and share His dreams with death each night.

First was His confidence in God’s Plan. He knew that His appointment with death was in the will of God and for the glory of God.

Second was His Love for mankind. He knew that man would never reach God unless God took man’s death penalty. He simply loved mankind enough to die in our place.

Third, He could face death because He knew He could conquer death. He knew that beyond the cross was Easter morning. He knew that Death might win a victory but He would win the war.

God offers you pardon and change thru faith in Jesus Christ. The abundant life is just a prayer away.

Prov 29.18 LIFE WITH A VIEW

Prov 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

During the Korean and Viet Nam wars one of the primary instructions given to soldiers about being captured was that they must never give in to depression and self-pity. Numerous soldiers who were captured did so and actually died from simply “Giving up”.

That same attitude has invaded many people in today’s world. They are bombarded by death, disaster, and destruction every evening on the news. Job security is a thing of the past to most people as companies are constantly being sold and re-structured. And hardly a family is immune from divorce or drug problems.

Life has lost much of its meaning to many of these people. They simply exist from day to day and end up each night “numbing” themselves in front of the TV before finally falling into the bed for a few hours sleep before they wearily drag themselves out of bed to face another dull depressing day. Life to them has lost its motivation and enthusiasm and they have become part of that vast multitude of the “living without life”.

The “Good News” of the Gospel is that Jesus came to give us LIFE; and Abundant Life at that!! Let’s see what these people need in order to catch a Vision that will put meaning and Motivation into their lives.

If you are going to have Abundant Life you need a Vision of Your:

I. LABOR:

A) Function- If you will find meaning to life you must realize that you are part of God’s Plan and that your life and work have meaning to God’s Kingdom. EVERY Christian is part of the Body of Christ and as such is important to the work of God- Some are “sore” thumbs, some are “funny bones”, some are ankles or necks or knees; but every part is important to the body of Christ.

What function do your perform? Prayer, Payer, Player, Sayer

B) Faithfulness- EVERY Christian will one day stand before the Judgement Seat of Christ and receive Rewards are Rebukes according to their Labor- We are saved by Grace through Faith apart from works but Jesus said that if you loved Him you would keep his commandments. We need to be constantly award that God recognizes and will one day reward our Labor. That will produce Faithfulness as we fear to fail the Lord and yet realize that He sees and acknowledges even when others do not.

Do you Labor for the Saviour or for Self??

II. LOVE-

A) Rest in God’s Love for You- You may think no one cares but God cares and is concerned about you.

B) Respond to others; Love to be loved- Love thy neighbor as thyself is not just a good statement but a good way to live.

III. LORD- Your vision must progress beyond yourself, to others, and ultimately to the Lord. Your view of the Lord will determine how you live and your preparation for dying.

A) Isaiah [Is. 6:]- His vision revealed God’s Holiness

B) John [Rev 1:]- His Vision revealed God’s Heaven

Does your life have a Vision?? or are you blinded by life’s problems and Pressures?? A proper relationship with the Lord is the answer.

Prov 29.18 TYPES OF VISION

Without my glasses I am legally blind. (I can’t see the chart much less the letters on it!). I try to always have an extra pair of glasses handy in case anything happens to the pair I’m wearing (Once aboard ship I was fixing an antenna on the after mast 60 feet above a rolling deck and my glasses blew off. I had to cling to the mast for dear life until someone could bring my glasses to me- they bounced from steel post to steel post and landed on a steel deck and remained unbroken!).

I thought of this the other day when I was riding down the road and accidently knocked my glasses into my lap (Children, have you ever tried driving a car at 55 mph when you can’t even see the hood! Wow that’s exciting!). I was able to immediately pick them up but it started me thinking. How many people driving down life’s pathway lose their vision, wreck their lives, and end up hurting themselves, their family, or innocent bystanders?

I remember so well the excitement I felt when I first got my glasses; slowly but surely my vision was becoming worse and as it did I kept moving closer and closer to the front of the classroom. Finally it got so bad until I couldn’t even see the blackboard sitting in the front row and the teacher sent a mote to my parents asking them to have my eyes checked. I’ll never forget that first day I got my glasses. For the first time I could see leaves on trees as we rode by and that night I saw my first star. It was so new and exciting and wonderful. Now, there are days I forget I even have them on except when they slide down my nose and aggravate me.

Isn’t that the way it works with Salvation? You realize you’re blinded by sin and you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and it’s so wonderful until you want to tell everyone. Everything seems different and new and full of excitement. But then time passes. You begin to take “sight” for granted. You hardly ever mention that you now can see and it becomes a little aggravating to have to avoid the sins you used to ignore because you couldn’t ”see” them. (If YOU have begun to take salvation for granted you need to remember “where you were and return to your first love” Rev 2:5).

Not only do we take sight for granted but sometimes we begin to allow things to fog our glasses causing us to stumble and fall. It may be that we have failed to grow in God’s Graces and in the knowledge of Christ and this causes our eyes to grow dim (II Pet 1: 4-9)). This is the case then we need to remember that Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).

Do not try to see without your ”glasses”. Jesus brought you out of darkness and He must keep you out of darkness. Do not let sin ”fog” your vision.

Sometimes the problem is that something gets in our eye. More often than not this eye “irritate” is a person (Ever notice how easy it is for us to see the speck of dust in our brother’s eye and miss the splinter in our own? (Matt 7: 3) . It’s just so easy to look at someone else’s faults and get our eyes off Jesus and our vision begins to fail. You need to remember the words of John – He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now (1 John 2:9).

Dimmed vision, Blocked vision, and, finally, Lost vision. When we first received sight everything looked wonderful but then we began to see the dirt and disease and death; all around us and sight turned from a Blessing to a Burden. (One of the sermons I’d like to hear sometime is “The Blind man one year later! In John 9 Jesus passes by a man blind from birth and heals him. He has never received any work training and now that he can see he no longer can beg. How did he support himself? After the wonder of sight wore off how- did he feel??).

This same type reaction happens to many Christians. They’re saved and long to change the world and their first burst of energy shows them vast mountain peaks in the distance to be scaled for 0od. They set out on the journey and it is only after they have begun that they lower their vision to see the vast desert between them and the mountain. The blazing Sun withers some and they stop. The enormous distance discourages some and they turn back after a short run. Some find an oasis and never have the courage to venture back out into the burning sands. But some continue to see the mountains sparkling in the distance and, as much as they admire the beauty of the desert flowers and the comfort of the water hole, they know-the danger of settling in the desert so they continue toward their goal.

I remember when I first started preaching. I wondered why the preachers before me had not changed the entire world already (After all, I figured it shouldn’t take me but 5 to 10 years to do it!!). Well, as you have probably guessed, it didn’t work that way. The easiest thing to do was to blame other people or the times we live in or anything else that seemed handy. Then, one day sitting in the quiet of my office going a hundred miles an hour in the “work” of the Lord my glasses fell off! I lost sight of the mountains and saw only desert. I realized I could not change the world. Every time I fixed a problem in one place another jumped up somewhere else. I began to think the mountains were mirages and hope began to falter.

That s when I heard the voice of Christ as He whispered in my ear one of the greatest truths I’ve ever learned CHRIST CAME TO CHANGE THE WORLD A PERSON AT A TIME! . I had been trying to change the whole world at one sweep- and I expected them to change into what I was. I had to realize that Jesus came to save them one at a time and then to take their individuality and mold it into the overall plan of God. Christ saves people, not programs, and once they’re saved they are placed as different parts of the Body of Christ so God can use THEIR part for HIS Glory.

Many-Churches and Pastors are in trouble today because they have lost sight of this fact. For years they have “compared themselves among themselves” and now they are reaping the fruit of that unwise action (II Cor 10: 12). Different Pastors have different personalities (I Cor 3:5-6). Different churches have different personalities (Acts 17: 11), and when we try to make each a carbon copy of the other we run into all kinds of problems (Ask the pastor of that 30 member, 100 year old country church who tried to make it into a “Super” Church about personalities!

We must regain our vision of God’s job for US and then do our part the way God called us to work while we other people fulfil their places in God’s plans. Without this vision Churches and Pastors will continue to falter and fail and the work of God will continue to go undone. And the ditch that these blindly led blind will fall into is horrible beyond imagination!

Thank God, I got my vision back and I’m headed to the mountain a step at a time. It’s great to be able to see. Sight shows you a lot of problems, as well as pleasures, but now I know that the problems are there even when you’re blind- you just can’t see them. Now that I can see I have a reference for my life and also the ability to see the “snakes and cactus” along the way so that I can avoid their dangers. It’s great to be able to see where I am going. It’s great to be going where I’m going! Come, let’s walk to the mountain together.

Prov 29.18 VISION

Today we begin reading the final book in the Bible as we complete our goal of reading the Bible completely through in 1992. It has been a challenging, but interesting, journey. Some days were difficult, some were slightly boring, and some were down right hard. But the joy and knowledge of the journey have made any difficulty worth the effort

One of the main themes running through the Bible, and especially through the wonderful book of Revelation, is the constant working out of the Plan of God on this earth. This knowledge of God’s Providence is especially important to Christians in the troubled times in which we live. What a joy to be able to claim Rom 8:28 as we face a new year- And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Yet, even among Christians, there is a sense of fear, frustration, and fatalism as we approach the New Year. Maybe this article by Martin DeHaan is truer that we care to admit-

Could the Missing Ingredient of our generation be a loss of vision? Have we stopped going to the mountaintop for a look into the distance? Have we lost a sense of the future through generations of talk about the bomb, the environmental time clock, the national debt, shrinking job markets, failure of leadership, and now the looming specter of the HIV virus? Have we stopped dreaming? Could that be why so many are willing to give up so much for so little?

Solomon confirmed that a loss of vision is fatal. He warned us what happens to the generation that does not have a word from the Lord that allows it to see beyond the present. Proverbs 29:18 says that “where there is no vision (A word from God), the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he.”

It is a word from the Lord which reminds us not of things as they are, but as they could, and should, and will be. It is the Word of God that gives us a basis for vision.

Vision is the ability to see what is not, but what could or will be. In the best sense, vision enables us to see what life could be as individuals and groups put themselves under the lordship and providership of Christ. This vision gives birth to industry and long-range planning for both this world and the next as we pray and work and watch in light of our Lord’s any moment, “Perhaps today” return.

This vision enables us to see that as more and more people grow in Christ, there will be fewer fathers who neglect or reject their children, fewer husbands who wear down their wives with insults before leaving them for someone else, fewer women who wonder if anyone understands their need for friendship and challenge, fewer young people who assume that they have no future, that since no one cares for them that there’s no reason for them to care either.

This vision enables us to see that as the family of God matures in Christ, there will be more singles with a sense of fulfillment, more husbands and wives who honor each other, more parents who treat their children as they would want to be treated, more homes and churches that are “safe places” for troubled people, more peaceful resolutions to disputes rather than bitterness and regret.

To this end, the vision of the RBC team… (List of worthwhile goals)

It may, however, be easier to talk about organizational vision than personal vision. What about us as individuals? Are we seeing the future? Planning for it? Dreaming not of what is, but of what by the grace of God could be for ourselves, our families, our friends, and the many who are not yet a part of our life?

Thomas Carlyle was right when he said that “our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance but to do what lies clearly at hand.” But unless we see what lies dimly at a distance, we won’t see clearly what is at hand. Without vision there is little long range planning. And with little planning we may end up where we don’t want to be. Martin DeHaan

Do YOU have a Vision of God’s Plan for You, for this world, and for His Church??

1. You’ll never be a committed Soul Winner unless you see the wondrous change that can come in lives and relationships when a person becomes personally acquainted with the forgiveness that comes when a person accepts Jesus Christ. Unless you are excited with a vision of what Jesus can do for a person then you won’t share the Gospel with that person.

2. You must see Church attendance as a continuing part of your development as a Christian or you’ll will look for excuses to miss instead of opportunities to serve. Do you have a vision of what God can accomplish in and thru you as you participate in the Study of the Word of God and in active Service in the Worship of God?

3. Do you have a Vision of what God can do in your family and in your community when you consistently live Christian Principles?

What if you treated people at work and in the grocery store the way you wanted to be treated? What if you gave the same love and respect to your family that you want to receive? What if you really believed that true happiness is found in Holy Living instead of worldly pleasures? What a difference it would make in your view of society if you saw it with the vision of Christ!

One by one He took them from me.

All the things I valued most

Until I was empty-handed;

Every glittering toy was lost.

And I walked earth’s highways, grieving,

In my rags of poverty

Till I heard His voice inviting

“Lift your empty hands to Me!”

So I held my hands toward heaven,

And He filled them with a store

Of His own transcendent riches

Till my hands could hold no more.

And at last I comprehended

With my stupid mind and dull

That God could not pour His riches

Into hands already full.

Martha Nicholson

Where there is no Vision, the people perish. Are you perishing?

Prov 30.- A WISE MAN’S OBSERVATIONS

We know little about the author of this chapter of Proverbs except what is given in vs 1. Agur means “Collector” and evidently he collected Wisdom from all areas of life. [This chapter and the next were probably added at the same time as chapters 25 29 by Hezekiah’s men].

I. THE NEED OF DEPENDENCE ON GOD’S WORD ALONE vs 2 6 (Agur begins by acknowledging that all of his wisdom and observing are as nothing when compared to the Word of God).

A) Because of our lack of Wisdom (2 3)-Remember that the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God (I Cor 1:20).

B) Because of God’s Greatness (4)- as evidenced in Creation. (We are the Creatures, He is the Creator. We must depend on HIM)

C) Because of the Purity and Protection of the Word (5). Pure- It is a HOLY GOD’s Word / Protection- A shield for those that trust in it

D) Because of the Penalty for adding to the Word (6). Reproof from God- See Rev 22:18 19 / Reproof from Man- Thou be found a liar

Do you try to “figure out life” and “do the best you can” or do you by Faith follow the plan God has given us in His word? Is 55:7 8 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. Is 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

II. TWO REQUESTS FOR A GOOD LIFE vs 7 9

A) Sanctification- Remove far from me vanity and lies (Help me not to build my life on the Frivolous or the False).

B) Satisfaction-

1. Don’t let my poverty tempt me to lie or steal

2. Don’t let my plenty make me forget who is my source. (Like Paul, we need to learn to be content in whatsoever state we find ourselves- Phil 4:11).

What do YOU think the Good life is?? Your answer will determine your effectiveness for the Lord and your peace during changing circumstances.

III. 5 OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THIS PRESENT GENERATION vs 10 14

1. They mind other people’s business (10) “Busybodies”

2. They disregard their family (11) (See Mark 7:9 13)

3. They think themselves pure in spite of their filthiness (12)

4. They are a prideful people (13)

5. They disregard others to satisfy their own wants (14)

Do YOU fit into any of these classes??

IV. 5 THINGS THAT ARE NEVER SATISFIED vs 15 17 (Having given the basis of satisfaction and then shown the failure of his generation Agur now shows by example how dissatisfaction can wreck your life).

DESIRE: 1. Horseleech (A worm that sucks the blood from its victim). Why can’t people see that things like drugs, alcohol, and lust suck the very life out of a person?

DEATH: 2. Grave- All die because the wages of sin is death and all have sinned. You can’t escape Death so you’d better be ready to die

DESTITUTE: 3. Barren womb- Gen 30:1 Give me children or I die A life without “Fruit” or purpose will never find peace

DESERT: 4. Dry Earth- Can’t produce fruit (And all your equipment and experience won’t produce without rain!)

DESTRUCTION: 5. Fire- Consumes that that’s put into it. The more you “give” the worst things are. Do you allow envy, covetousness, or “want” to wreck your Life??

vs 17 Disobeying Parents brings Punishment- What a way to close this first section that has dealt with observations about Satisfaction. Agur shows the folly of children being dissatisfied with their parent’s leadership (Like the Prodigal Son who wanted his inheritance and then wasted it on this world). Children seem to think that they know better than their parents or that the parent is keeping back something from the child.

Do you disregard God’ Word or His plan for your life because you think you know better than He!??

V. 5 WONDERFUL WAYS 18 20 (Having made his observations about people’s WANTS Agur now looks at their WAYS and their WALK).

1. Eagle in the Air- How does He fly?

2. Serpent on the Rock- How does He crawl?

3. Ship in the Sea- How does it find it’s port?

4. Man with a Maid- How do they “fall in Love”?

5. Adulterous Woman- How does she explain her sin?

Agur lays special emphasis on the fact that each of these leave no trail. He then especially applies it to the adulterous woman who “wipes her mouth and says, I have done no wickedness”. The idea being that people think that because no one sees what was done then it’s not really wrong. How many people’s only hindrance to sin is public opinion (instead of faithfulness to God)?

VI. WRONG PROMOTIONS 21 23 (Shows that changing circumstances doesn’t change character)

4 Unbearable things:

1. Servant made to reign- power without ability

2. Fool filled with meat- Prosperity without responsibility

3. Odious (unloved and repugnant) Woman when married- Privilege without love

4. Handmaid heir to mistress- Position without accountability (Remember Hagar and Sarah’s trouble when the handmaid began to think she was better than the mistress- Gen 16:4)

Luke 16:10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

Prov 30.5 THE WORD OF GOD

Prov. 30:5 Every word of God is pure; he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

1) Every Word: Heaven and Earth will pass away but not one jot or tittle of God’s word will fail.

2) Of God: Given by Inspiration of God (God Breathed). Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

I. WHAT WE SHOULD DO WITH IT.

A) Study it- II Tim 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Why? Prov 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. Rev 22:18 19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

II Tim 1:17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

B) Share it- I Pet 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorrubpible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Example of Marion desiring to use his mouth to testify. Outreach ministry of getting the word to the world.)

C) Obey it- James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Either the Word will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the word. Ps 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. Ps 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Jn 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.

II. WHAT IT DOES FOR US.

A) Shield’s us- Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (Example of Rabbit hiding under the rock.) Our Shield is Faith- which comes from the Word of God.

B) Saves us- II Tim 3:16 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

C) Sustains us- Prov 16:3 Commit thy works unto the Lord and thy thoughts shall be established. Is 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee.

We should attend Sunday School and all Church services. We should read the Bible every day.

We should apply its principles to our lives.

1. Do you have a program of Bible Training for your Children? Deut 6:6 7 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. II Tim 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Know it in your head, stow it in your heart, show it in your life.

Family Devotion, Regular Church attendance (Do you know what they are being taught in Sunday School Class??)

Know how to apply the word to family situations:

A) Marriage- Let your child know not to be unequally yoked to a lost person. (Esau who married to spite his parents and the tragic conquences).

B) Work- Earn living by sweat of brow, If a an won’t work don’t let him eat, If you provide not for your own you have denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.

C) Education in real living- Wisdom from the Proverbs.

Faith:

1. The Pardon of Faith- Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2. The Power of Faith- I John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Why do we live in defeat if Victory is found in Faith??

3. The Performance of Faith- James 2:19 20 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? If you believe that your car will take you home but remain seated in the Church you’ll never get home!!

Prov 30.11 LOST GENERATION

Pr 30:11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

  1. Nations forget God in a Generation- Ex 1:6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
  2. God’s punishment of sin can last a generation- Nu 32:13 And the LORD’S anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.
  3. Churches can lose their vision of God in a Generation- Jg 2:10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
  4. God keeps records of the Generations- Mt 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham

3 Generational Truths you need to Know:

1) God’s Truth is the same in Every Generation- (Psalms 100:5) For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

2) Men look to their own abilities instead of God=s way in every generation- Pr 30:12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

3) God calls men from every Generation to follow Him-1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Prov 30.17 Bless the Buzzards!

While driving down the road recently I came across 2 Buzzards eating the remains of a possum that had been run over in the road. It was disgusting at first but then I realized that Buzzards have a “ministry” also.

FIRST- Buzzards act as A PROPHETIC POINTER– For wheresoever the carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered together (Mat 24:28). Right now there are a lot of “Buzzards” gathered around Israel. Better take warning!

SECOND- Buzzards are a Necessary “evil” as they dispose of waste. It is this part of the Buzzard “ministry” that I want us to look at and find applications for today.

The word “Buzzard” is not found in the Bible. The closest you can come to our Buzzard is called an Eagle in the Bible. That brings us to an interesting difficulty. The word “Eagle” describes a majestic bird of prey (and is used to represent God’s Care) numerous times but other times it is used to describe an unclean bird that scavenges the remains of the dead for food.

The interesting thing for us in this is that it shows us the need of perception about things in our lives.

1> Some things that are good for us can be bad for us if used wrong- food (Necessary but can damage health if used wrong), Love without guidelines (No discipline for children, sex outside marriage, etc), study (Necessary to learn but much study is a weariness of the flesh (Ecc 12:12)).

2> Some things that are good become bad under prolonged exposure- A land of only sunshine become desert. If garbage is not removed it contaminates the good.

It is this last principle that relates to our look at the “Blessings of Buzzards”. None of us like thinking about the work of Buzzards in disposing of dead bodies; and none of us like thinking about the need of waste disposal in our own life, But there are several things we need to know about waste:

1. Waste poisons our life- That’s why people who have lost the use of their kidneys have to have their blood purified. That’s why the Dead Sea is dead; it has no outlet to get rid of it’s impurities.

In our spiritual life this means we must have outlets for our inputs- The Christian life is not just something you learn about; it’s something you live. You must practice what is preached or you will become deadweight instead of a disciple.

2. Waste is a sign of growth- Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox (Prov 14:4). The clean barn is nice but it means no crops are coming in. A church that’s growing is going to have to deal with “growth problems”. Some people only want a Christianity that calls us to a party instead of a cross. They don’t want anything in their Christian life that involves work or stress; yet, these are necessary parts of growth.

Bless the Buzzards. We don’t like their work but it’s necessary. In the same way, it’s necessary to deal with the waste of sin in our life. The only cure for that is the applied blood of Christ. It’s not nice to think about but it’s even more horrible to think about what will happen if it’s not applied.

An Unclean bird- And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the osprey, (Lev 11:13)

Represents God’s Care- Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself (Exo 19:4).

Illustrates God’s way of developing people- As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: (Deu 32:11)

Exemplifies Energy- Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (Psa 103:5). But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (Isa 40:31)

Represents an attribute of God- As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. (Ezek 1:10)

2 Other interesting facts about “Eagles”:

Illustrates rescuing God’s People: And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.” (Rev 12:14).

Illustrates Punishing the Disrespectful: The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. (Prov 30:17)

Prov 30.24 28 4 EDIFYING EXAMPLES

I. Four Animals that give us Good Examples to Follow:

Prov 30:24 28 There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise: 25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; 26 The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; 27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands; 28 The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.

1. Ants- because of the preparation they make: prepare their meat in the summer.

A) Not strong but work hard

B) Prepare for the future

2. Cronies (Cliff Badgers)- Because of the protection they enjoy: they make their houses in the rocks

A) Foundation- build their house on the rock and not the sand

B) Fortification- Depend on the rock for protection (The cotton-tail rabbit lives while the jack rabbit dies because the cottontail hides in the rock while the jack rabbit tries to outrun his foes).

3. Locust- Because of the partnership they share: go forth by bands.

A) Unity- The church has no visible King but is is a divine fellowship (The Body of Christ)

B) One Direction- Forward

4. Spider- Because of the position they occupy: in kings palaces

A) Persistent- keep at it

B) Position- Christians dwell in the heavenlies with Christ. No wonder these are called exceeding wise.

Have YOU made your preparation to meet God? Do YOU enjoy the protection, partnership, and Position of a child of God?

II. 4 THINGS THAT GO WELL 29 31 “Stately in Steps”. These are examples of what we should have by righteous living:

1. Lion- Because of his strength: strongest among beast (Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me)

2. Greyhound- Because of his speed. They that wait upon the Lord renew strength so that they can run and not be weary (Is 40:31).

3. He Goat- Because of his surefootedness: able to climb on the rocks; stable in difficult circumstances

4. King, when no one rises up against him: Because of his security. The pleasantness of peace when all enemies have been defeated. We have this kind of peace in Christ who has defeated death, hell, and the grave.

2 PARTING OBSERVATIONS 32 33

1. Don’t tell others what to do when you are at fault vs 32 (See Matt 7:3 5 and Rom 2:21 23)

2. Don’t keep “picking” at trouble or it will get bigger. If you know what to do then do it; if not, “Let sleeping dogs lie” until you know what to do.

Prov 16:7 When a man’s ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. Ephesians 4:1 I beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.

Prov. 30:24-28 ANT LESSONS

God uses many teachers to bring needed lessons to people:

  1. Proclaimers of the Word of God: And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it (Deuteronomy 4:14). For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:13-14).
  2. Parents: Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD (Psalms 34:11). See Deut 6:6-9
  3. The Holy Spirit: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (John 14:26). Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth (John 16:13).
  4. Nature: Doth not even nature itself teach you,… (1 Corinthians 11:14). We can learn a lot watching animals and nature: But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee (Job 12:7-8).

We are surrounded by animals that God uses to instruct us but we only learn if we contemplate their lessons: The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider (Isa 1:3). This is why today we look at “Lessons from Ants”.

A. The weakness of the ant: The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer (Proverbs 30:25). These verses teach us that wisdom is not measureable by physical magnitude. A large man may be a little man mentally. A little body may shelter a great soul.

When the Bible says they are not strong it is a relative term. It means they’re not strong compared to a horse because of their size, but they do have strength. An ant can carry 50 times his own body weight for 100 yards. If I could do that I would be able to carry over 5 tons for 17 miles. But the ant is small in size and understands that he can accomplish little or nothing by himself. And so the weakness of the ant causes him to compensate for his weakness by cooperating with other ants. The ant survives because when an ant finds food he eats his little morsel and then communicates his find to the entire colony and they all come. They cooperate together for their mutual survival.

Together they become triumphant. I wish the church could get hold of this [Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment (1 Corinthians 1:10)]. Do you know what synergy is? Synergy means there are two horses and one horse by himself can pull a load of 1,000 pounds. The second horse can also pull a load of 1,000 pounds. But if you harness the horses up to a load then together they can pull 3,000 pounds because of the combining of their energies. When we work together we don’t just get what I can do and just what you can do—we get an explosive synergy of effectiveness! The ant overcomes weakness by teamwork and by cooperation.

B. The work of the ant. Proverbs 6:7 says the ant has ‘no guide, overseer, or ruler.’ In other words, they are self-motivated. They work without anyone telling them what to do. They assume personal responsibility. Each of them knows what his or her job is, and they do it. And they have one focus and only one, which is directed toward taking care of the queen down in the ground in the colony. The queen will, over her lifetime, lay over 200 million eggs if they bring her the nourishment she needs. Now, even if I were an ant, 200 million sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? And this queen is down there dependent on everybody to bring her the nourishment she needs to be able to lay 200 million eggs. And all the energy of every ant in the colony is directed toward meeting the needs of this ant so she can reproduce. In other words, all the energy of the colony is directed toward one thing—reproduction.

That is the work of the church—reproduction. Is this where the church is putting its energy today? His last command should be our first concern ‘Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature’ (Mk 16:15). The reproduction quota of the queen ant is a lot, but your reproduction can exceed over one million souls in just 20 years if you win one soul a year and teach your converts to do the same. [The Principle of multiplying effort- Each one wins one each year and each one who is won wins one each year equals astonishing results in 20 years].

Soul-winning and evangelism can never slip in priority; the “main thing” must always be the main thing. I know it is important to disciple people and worship the Lord and fellowship but everything depends upon evangelism. When we get used to having services where people do not come to Christ and we get used to using the baptistery as a storage place for Christmas decorations then we miss God’s purpose for our existence. Evangelism must always be our priority-like the ant we must spend our energy toward one goal—reproduction (Bringing people to Christ).

C. The wisdom of the ant. Twice the Bible references the wisdom of the ant. In Prov.6:6 we read Consider her ways and be wise. And Prov.30:24 declares ants “are exceeding wise”. The ant is wise because he prepares a harvest in the summer instead of waiting on the hard times of winter (The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer Proverbs 30:25).

We need wisdom to prepare a “summertime harvest of soul winning”- The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved (Jeremiah 8:20). The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. (Prov 11:30). Are you wise enough to pick fruit at the right time?

There needs to be a “summertime awareness of Service”- He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame (Prov 10:5). Lazy, lukewarm, Christians allow fruit to “rot in the field” because they wait for a “convenient time” to use their time and talents for the Lord instead of being wise with their time.

The ant is not big comparably speaking with the rest of God’s creation, but for their size they can move a great deal. The thing that is pointed out in this proverb is the fact that they do what they have got to do when it’s time to do it. They know their time of opportunity and they make the best of it. A little proverb that goes along with what is said here: ‘Make hay while the sun shines.’ So much of the time we understand what is being said, but the problem is we don’t do it—which is knowledge without wisdom. I believe we all have a summer and we know what we ought to be doing, but too much of the time we think how it ought to be done, but never get it done.

Prov 31.10 31 GUIDELINES FOR A GOOD WIFE

1. Discretion is necessary- 11:22 As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

2. A Wife’s character can help make or break her husband- 12:4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is a rotteness to his bones.

3. She shouldn’t be a “Nag”- 27:15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike (See also 25:24; 19:13, and especially 21:19 which explains why men leave home when their wife starts to quarrel or nag!)

4. Marriages should be “Made in Heaven”- 19:14 Houses and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the Lord. (Marriage should also be “like Heaven”- 18:22 Who findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.)

AN EXAMPLE OF THE PERFECT WOMAN: Prov 31:10 31

vs 10 She is not the Usual- Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies

vs 11 Her Husband doesn’t have to Buy her Love- The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

vs 12 Her Husband can trust in her- She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

vs 13 She is a Willing Worker- She seeketh wool, and flax. and worketh willingly with her hands.

vs 14 She is a “shopper”- She is like the merchants ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

vs 15 She is not lazy- She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. vs 16 She has business sense- She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

vs 17 She keeps herself in shape- She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

vs 18 She looks to the Future- She preceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

vs 19 She does things for herself- She layeth her hands to the spindle and her hands hold the distaff.

vs 20 She loves others- She stretcheth out her hand to the poor, yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

vs 21 She plans ahead- She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

vs 22 She dresses well- She maketh herself coverings of tapestry, her clothing is silk and purple.

vs 23 Behind every good man is a good woman- Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. vs 24 She helps with the budget- She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delievereth girdles unto the merchants.

vs 25 Her eyes are on Heaven and not the World’s Fashion- Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to comex.

vs 26 She is not a Gossip- She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

vs 27 She is a good Housekeeper- She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

vs 28 Her family Praise her- Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

vs 29 Her family think she is the best- Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

vs 30 She is a God fearing woman- Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, shall be praised. vs 31 Her works and life show she’s special- Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Pro 31:30 REAL BEAUTY

Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised (Prov 31:30)

Mothers should know the truth of this verse very well:

1. Favor is deceitful– The same children that pick that special Mother’s day card to give you today and say such nice things about you in public will sit down at your loaded table and eat that meal you’ve slaved over before adjourning to the living room to talk and rest while you clean up and wash the dishes!!

2. Beauty is Vain– The physical strain of bearing and bringing up children is enough to make even the most beautiful of women a little “ragged around the edges” [It still amazes me that there aren’t more bald headed women from “pulling out their hair”!]. Children are much more interested in a Mother’s LOVE than they are her LOOKS!

3. A woman that feareth the Lord shall be praised– A mother’s relationship with the Lord is the most important thing she can show and share with her children.

Because there are more than mothers here today I want us to notice something about women that everyone is concerned with; BEAUTY, and see how Vain it really is.

I. THE POWER OF BEAUTY

A) Caused Satan’s Fall‑ Ez 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness; PRIDE which led to desire for Power

B) Caused Abraham’s Lie ‑ Gen 12:11-13 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee. DESIRE (Do you dress to make men want you??)

C) Caused Isaac’s lie ‑ Gen 26:6-7 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. People’s ideas of Beauty come from parents as well as their ideas on how to handle it (Children of Alcohol, Abusers)

D) Caused Jacob to work 14 years- Gen 29:17-18 Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. (Then he was tricked with Leah and had to serve 7 more years in order to get Rachel). Drives people to Diet, Exercise, Sacrifice…

E) Leads to Curiosity and discovery- ECC 3:11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. The Beauty of the Mountains or lands in the distance has caused many an explorer to continue when his mind said stop. There is a beauty and wonder to most scientist; that maybe only they can see, but it continually drives them to greater discoveries.

F) Leads to Debauchery, Divorce, Disease, and Death- BAIT on hook

1. Be Warned of the Wayward Woman- Pro 6:23-25 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman. Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. (See Prov 5:3-11)

2. Be Warned of the Lustful Look- II Sam 11:2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. In the day in which we live, in which everything from toothpaste to Toyotas are sold by scantily dressed women; we need to remember afresh the words of Jesus- Matt 5:28 But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Teen, Mid-Life

II. THE TRUTH ABOUT BEAUTY

A) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder‑ Prov 20:29 The glory of young men is their strength; and the beauty of old men is the grey head. Some value Physical, some mental, some “aura” of star…

B) A beautiful person loses their beauty when their sin is revealed: Ps 39:11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah. It changes the beauty of their countenance and of their reputation (Remember, sometimes beauty is what you think of a person)

C) True Beauty is found in a Relationship with the Lord: Ps 90:17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; Peace and Joy of Christian

D) Worthy Worship produces real Beauty‑ Ps 29:2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. Ps 96:6 Honor and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. (Remember the Glow on Moses’ face after being with God.)

E) Real Beauty is not just a clean face, but a clean heart- Ps 149:4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

FAVOR IS DECEITFUL….BEAUTY IS VAIN…BUT A WOMAN (OR MAN) THAT FEARETH THE LORD SHALL BE PRAISED.

One closing Thought from a sermon Jesus preached- Matt 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. If your Beauty is only “skin deep” the blood of Christ can wash you from the “inside out” and change you from a blighted son of Satan to a Saved son of God.

SOME ADDITIONAL BEAUTY NOTES

1. Should not be the sole reason for choosing a wife- Deut 21:10-13 A beautiful captive woman must shave her head, let her nails grow, and mourn for a month; then you could take her as wife. This destroyed simply outside beauty (bald) and impulsive desire (Wait a month).

2. Beauty is used of men also- David I Sam 16:12 Absalom II Sam 14:25

3. Beauty describes some places- Mt Zion Ps 48:2

4. Jesus had no beauty that we should desire him- Is 53:2

5. Beautiful Feet bring Salvation- Is 52:7 Rom 10:15

6. Preacher is supposed to have beautiful clothes!! Ex 28:2

7. The Lord’s wrath will destroy the beauty women put such pride in- Is 3:16-26

I Tim 2:9 In like manner also, that women adoen themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array. But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. I Pet 3:3-4 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or or putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

Do You have the Beauty of God in your heart and life??? / Do you Have “beautiful feet” to spread the Gospel?? /Do you put as much emphasis on your Spiritual Being as you do your Physical looks???
