Joshua 01:1‑10 ADVANCING FOR THE LORD

The Children of Israel were at a “Cross-roads” situation in their life. They were faced with 3 choices: (1) Go Back to Egypt and Captivity, (2) Continue to wander in the Wilderness and die, or (3) Cross Jordan with Faith in God’s Promises. The proper action was #3 but that would require some things:

1. COOPERATION- This was an untrained, untried, unequipped people that could only win if they joined together in God’s plan (March around Jericho). (Have you ever wondered why geese fly in their famous “V” formation? Engineers found that when they are in this formation each goose creates an upward lift for the goose that follows. When all the geese do their part the whole flock has 71% greater flying range than if going alone. That’s why when one of the geese begins to lag behind the others will “honk” him back into place. Christians need that type of cooperation and concern).

2. COURAGE- to cross the river, to trust God’s Plan

3. CLEAN- Defilement would prevent God’s Blessings. They were doomed without God’s Presence. (Remember Achan’s Sin)

4. COMMAND- Someone to show them the way and lead them. Members must be committed to the Church; not Looking, but Loyal. Need a Preacher who (a) Preaches the Word of God, (b) Lives the Word of God, (c) Provides Leadership (People need a leader, not a signpost. A sign tell you what is ahead. A leader shows you how to get there), and (d) Loves his people.

5. CHRIST- The “Captain of the Host”. Everything else is meaningless without Him. If He is lifted up then all will be drawn to Him. Make our Church so that the Holy Spirit will send men here to learn to KNOW Christ as Saviour and the SHOW Him in their lives.

What is YOUR Jordan? That place where you stopped at and now all you’re doing is wandering in the Wilderness waiting to die.

Joshua 01:1-18 ADVANCING FOR THE LORD

What is YOUR Jordan? That place where you stopped advancing for the Lord and now all you are doing is wandering in the Wilderness waiting to die.

• The Jordan of Courage: Joshua/Israel – Josh 1:1-10 [Is fear your failure?]

• The Jordan of Cure: Naaman- 2Kings 5: [Is sickness your stopping point?]

• The Jordan of Commitment: Elijah/Elisha- 2Kings 2: [Do obstacles obstruct you?]

• The Jordan of Crucifixion: Jesus- Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased (Luke 3:21-22). [Have you committed to the Cross?]

4. COMMAND- Someone to show them the way and lead them. Members must be committed to the Church; not Looking for a place but Loyal to God’s Work. Need a Leader they trust who

a. Preaches the Word of God

b. Lives the Word of God

c. Provides Leadership (People need a leader, not a signpost. A sign tell you what is ahead. A leader shows you how to get there)

d. Loves his people.

5. CHRIST- The “Captain of the Host”. Everything else is meaningless without Him. If He is lifted up then all will be drawn to Him. Make our Church so that the Holy Spirit will send men here to learn to KNOW Christ as Savior and the SHOW Him in their lives.

Do not let fear make you a failure (For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7). Have Courage and go forward.

Joshua 01:8 DEVELOPING GRACE INTO THE CHURCH GOD WANTS

(Josh 1:8) This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

(Isa 48:17) Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

(Psa 35:27) Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.

THE FIVE AREA THAT MAKE UP A COMPLETE CHURCH:

1. WORSHIP- Upward to God

2. STUDY OF THE WORD- Downward from God

3. FELLOWSHIP- Around with Man

4. EVANGELISM- Outward to Man

5. SERVICE- For man to Honor God; For God to show man

Worship IDEA– Let the Choir enter by walking around the Church; singing our theme song as they go. Continue to emphasis the Sharing/ Singing Service on Wednesday Night. Do a series of Study on “Worship” during the Wednesday Night Services.

Evangelism/Bible study IDEA- Distribute our Revelation Books just like the Jehovah Witness distribute theirs. Invite people to come hear the real Truth. Need a consistent time- start a series of sermons on Eschatology/Revelation.

Our strong points are Study of the Word and Fellowship (at Church). Our Medium points are Worship and Service. Our Weak Point is Evangelism (Mainly my fault, I push “making disciples” {Matt 28:18-20} instead of “Winning Souls”).

Evangelism IDEA- Use the Soul Winning Seminar Tapes Larry has during the 9am service (in the fellowship Building). Have a Month of Thursday Night Visitation. Cater a Wednesday Night service once a quarter: meet at 6:30pm, eat, have devotion, and then let families visit the lost and lukewarm.

Fellowship IDEA- Print a year calendar for the Church listing all the birthdays and anniversaries, addresses and phone numbers.

Worship Elements: Too many Christians worship their work, work at their play, and play at their worship.

1. Praise

2. Prayer

3. Scripture Reading

4. Offering

5. Proclamation of the Word

Worship should be a celebration- not a riot but a rejoicing. It needs a degree of predictability while maintain spontaneity. It should never be inferior- Malachi preached on offering the lame and blind and that which the governor would not accept but God was supposed to.

The House of Worship should be Reverenced and Repaired. It should offer praise to God by it’s appearance.

Problems in Worship

1. Sadness

2. Sameness

3. Sin in our Life (Is 1:11-17) Against our Brother (Matt 5:23-24). In taking of the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor 11:18, 29-30).

False Worship:

  1. In praying we are not to stand on the street corners to be heard of men.
  2. In giving we are not to blow a trumpet to attract attention.
  3. In Fasting we are not to put ashes on our foreheads to advertise our spirituality. (Matt 6:1-18)

Many people look at Worship as an Escape from the world or an outlet for their emotions instead of Adoration to God. At the end of the service we should not ask “What did I get out of it?” but “What did I give God?”.

Worshipping the Preacher: Cornelius worship Peter- And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. Acts 10:25-26.

People of Lystra worship Paul- And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker. Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people. Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them. Acts 14:11-18

John trying to worship Angels- And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Rev 19:10).

And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God (Rev 22:8-9).

Joshua 2:12 A TRUE TOKEN

Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token (Joshua 2:12).

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace (Hebrews 11:30-31).

One of the most familiar stories in the Bible is the story of the fall of Jericho. The walls of Jericho fell because of Faith and Faith also delivered a harlot and her family from destruction. One of the principle features of the story Is the “True Token” given to Rahab; The sign of the scarlet cord tied in her window to identify her home. This “True Token” gives us some important lesson about how God works in bringing salvation to a person.

I. SOMEONE WAS SENT (The spies thought they were to search out the land but they really were to find a Lost Lamb!)

A) God has someone for everyone who wants to know Him:

  1. Jesus must needs go thru Samaria to meet a woman at a well.
  2. Philip must leave a Revival and go into the desert so he could meet an Ethiopian Eunuch
  3. Peter had a vision to go to Cornelius at the same time Cornelius’ men arrived at his gate
  4. Paul went to Jail in order to meet the Philippian jailor.

Where will God put you in order for you to tell someone about Christ? Rev. Washington Miles spent the night in a hospital so the man in the bed beside him could be saved.

A Slave girl went into captivity so she could tell Naaman about the Prophet Elijah

Daniel and the Hebrew endured captivity, fiery furnaces, and lion’s dens in order to share God’s plans.

B) Reputation preceded going (Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God). And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed (Joshua 2:9-10).

I became interested in salvation because of the life and example of my neighbor, a deacon.

Rahab believed in God’s plan and it changed her life (She had evidently become a seamstress [flax] and innkeeper instead of a harlot) but others believed not and perished in the fall of Jericho. Rahab invited God’s people into her life while others shut them out and tried to destroy them.

II. SOMEONE HAD A NEED:

A) Rahab needed to change her life by more than surface changes. Woman at the well needed to know a Prophet who could change her, Woman taken in adultery needed a Protector to change her, and May Magdalene (Out of whom was cast 7 devils) needed supernatural Power to change.

B) The City Rahab lived in was set to be destroyed. The walls were coming down and the city was to be burned. Her only hope was Faith in the word of the messengers of God who told her to tie a scarlet cord around her window and then keep all her family inside her house (And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house Acts 16:31).

C) Her Faith caused her to receive the spies but works were added to her faith- Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? (James 2:25). Many people believe in a “god” and that the world is headed for destruction but they will not trust in Christ and claim the “true token” of His blood applied to their sin debt.

III. A TRUE TOKEN WAS GIVEN

A) In Rahab’s case it was a scarlet cord so the army would know she was protected. The death angel in Egypt looked for the blood applied.

B) In the case of Christians it is the Holy Spirit give as the “Earnest” (Down payment) of our inheritance. And just like the other people in Jericho, we will not be saved from destruction without this “true token” of our relationship with God (But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his Romans 8:9).

A man of Capernaum came to Cana to see Jesus because his boy was sick. He believed Jesus’ word even though he had to travel 20 miles to see the evidence. Trusting God means we trust God.

Joshua 02:17-20 WITHIN THE HOUSE

The men said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. If anyone goes outside your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head; we will not be responsible. As for anyone who is in the house with you, his blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on him. But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.” “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.” So she sent them away and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. (Josh 2:17-20) Page 313

This is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible. Yet, within this story, there lie some very important truths.

1> God is able to save anyone who comes to Him- Rahab was a prostitute

2> Salvation is only for those who have the Blood applied:

a) The Symbol of the Scarlet Cord on the Window

b) As seen in the PASSOVER where the death angel came to all who did not have the blood on the door.

c) The Philippian Jailor- Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved, AND THY HOUSE.

All of these were saved because the people trusted in the word of God. There is no “Magic” in a certain house and one person cannot save another; but there is a tremendous change when someone in a household has the blood applied and begins to follow Christ.

This coming Thursday (March 19) marks by thirtieth years of service for the Lord. I was the first person saved in my family; and now all of my family are saved and serving the Lord. I certainly can not, and do not, take the credit for their salvation; but I can’t help but wonder where the Jones family would be today if that 14 year old boy hadn’t kneeled on that altar that Monday night 30 years ago and asked Christ to forgive his sins and apply the blood to his life.

Today I want us to see Two benefits of being WITHIN A HOUSE where the Blood has been applied and God’s Word is the rule of faith and practice.

I. THE “TRUMPET” GIVES A CERTAIN SOUND- If the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? (1 Cor 14:8). A Family is like a Choir; it needs 4 part harmony. What a change it will make in a family when Dad, Mom, and Children all walk accord to God’s Direction. Love will reign supreme; Peace -plenteous; Harmony will be Heavenly.

Listening to the wrong “tune” will lead to sour notes and can even “break up the band”- drove Eve out of the garden, Destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, led Israel Astray.

Parents have a Right and the Responsibility to say who your children’s friends are- Wouldn’t let a stranger borrow your car, shouldn’t let them date your daughter.

Friends determine a lot about a person’s character and Reputation

Stand for God, Not against People. Don’t make your children chose between you and their friends. Let them see which way God wants them to go.

II. BUILDS A FOUNDATION TO BUILD A RIGHT LIFE ON- When the family is founded on the rock it can with stand the storms of life and it will build those kind of values in future generations.

Is the blood applied to the door of YOUR HEART?

Joshua 03:- THINGS THAT KEEP US FROM ENJOYING BLESSINGS OF GOD

It seems today that the mark of Christianity is Restlessness, Rebellion, and wickedness. We hear tell of men in days gone by who had a zeal for God and reaped the Blessings of God but they seem to be little in evidence today.

What has caused Christians to “hang their harps on the willows” (Ps 137:2) and mourn sore like doves? What causes Christians to jump from one Church to another seeking that elusive “something” they never seem to find? What keeps us from enjoying the blessings of God??

There are numerous answers to these questions but I think some illumination can be gained by looking at Israel. They had escaped the captivity of Egypt and were on their way to the Promised Land to enjoy God’s Blessings. However, 4 things blocked their Blessings.

I. THE FEAR OF GIANTS– 10 of the spies brought back a glowing report of the Blessings and Bounty of Canaan Land. The “fly in the ointment” however was the fact that they also reported Giants in the land. Israel allowed their Fear to overcome their Faith and turned away from God’s Blessings.

They missed God’s plan for their lives and died in the desert because they thought God’s Blessings were dependent on man’s strength.

It’s a sad story, but I wonder how many Church members today are living lives of “Quite Desperation” waiting to die in the desert because they refused to say with Paul, I can do all things through Christ who Strengthens me (Phil 4:13).

II. THE FURY OF JORDAN– When finally the Children of Israel agreed to enter the Promised Land the first thing they had to face was the Jordan River in all it’s fury. God did not bring them to the river at it’s lowest point; He brought them to it at Flood stage (Josh 3:15)!

Is this where you fail? Did you think that as soon as you Claimed God’s provision for Strength that all the obstacles would be removed and Life’s Road would be easy? Instead, you found Jordan at it’s worst!

We know that God turned it into a Benefit for Israel as He opened a way for them to cross but many Christians still allows unexpected problems and difficulties to become road blocks for them. Like James (1:24) we must learn to count it all joy when we fall into divers temptations; knowing that the trying of our faith works patience. But let patience have her complete work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking nothing. If we’ll just press on by Faith the waters will part and Victory will be ours.

III. THE FORTRESS OF JERICHO– Now you’re into the Promised Land and you find that Blessings include Battles. You’ve traveled this far by Faith but now it makes mores “sense” to devise a scheme of your own. Especially since God’s plan of simply marching around and around the problem doesn’t seem to work and makes you look foolish.

You want to build weapons, dig tunnels, and train to fight. Instead, God asks you to simply trust Him; until the walls come down and the victory is won. Then you realize afresh that God gets the Glory because the Battle is not yours but the Lords. This is especially true when we recognize that we are not wrestling against flesh and blood but against Principalities and Powers and Rulers of the darkness of this world.

IV. THE FAILURE AT AI– This final killer of Blessings is so subtle and yet so deadly. Giants and Jordan and Jericho have all fallen before your constant Faith and now you look forward to enjoying the Victorious Life; when suddenly you’re brought to crushing Defeat. Your prayers and soul searching bring the knowledge of secret hidden sin. It seemed so small and insignificant at first that you overlooked it but now the Blessed Fellowship of God is broken and you hear Him say, neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you (Josh 7:12). The overwhelming truth that Sin separates has come home to you. You realize that only as you remove the Sin can the Blessing of Victory be yours again.

I wonder how many Christians and Churches today have Defeat and Despondence instead of Blessing and Bounty because they have not dealt with Sin in their midst??

The Eyes of the Lord run to and fro through out the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him (II Chron 16:9). The Lord WANTS to Bless His people if they will just be “Blessable”. What Hinders YOU from enjoying the Blessings of God??

Joshua 04:5-6 SIGNS

(Joshua 4:5-6) And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel: That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

SIGNS OF SAINTS

1) Brag on God- (Malachi 3:16) Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.

2) Bear Godly Fruit- (Matthew 7:18-20) A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

3) Believe God’s Word- (Romans 1:17) For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. (Romans 10:17) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

SIGNS OF SORRY SAINTS

1) Grumble about God’s Program- (Numbers 11:1) And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.

2) Gossip about God’s People- Re 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

3) Gravitate toward Gold and Pleasures- Lot choose Sodom and lost his reputation, his family, and his relationship with the Lord.

SIGNS FROM GOD

1. Virgin Born Son (Isaiah 7:14) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

2. Victory over Death (Matthew 12:39-40) But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. A dead man resurrected (not resuscitated)

3) The Spirit’s arrival- Acts 2

Joshua 04:5-7 REMEMBER RIVER ROCKS

And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel: That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. (Joshua 4:5-7).

Stone of:

  1. ResurrectionAnd when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. (Mark 16:1-4).
  2. Renewal- Elijah came unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? (1 Kings 19:9-13).
  3. RevelationAnd he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen. (Exodus 33:18-23).
  4. RefreshmentAnd did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. (1 Corinthians 10:4).
  5. RefugeFrom the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (Psalms 61:2).. Jack Rabbit ran but Cotton Tail hid under rock
  6. ResultsAnd he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine. (1 Samuel 17:40).
  7. ReligionYe also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. (1 Peter 2:5-6).
  8. Rigidity- Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. (Matthew 7:24-25).
  9. ResistanceUnto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. (1 Peter 2:7-8).
  10. RejectionAgainst whom do ye sport yourselves? against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood, Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks? Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these? (Isaiah 57:4-6).
  11. ReductionWhosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. (Luke 20:18).
  12. RemembranceAnd those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal. And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over: That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever. (Joshua 4:20-24).

What are we to Remember tonight?

  1. Remember our Past– Great Men who wanted to do something for God.
  2. Remember our Purpose
    1. Business: Order (Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established (Proverbs 15:22). Ex Committee Meet once each quarter to hear or review reports (Other committees meet as necessary). Annual Conference like State to elect and confirm
    2. Evangelism: Exchange sermons
    3. Educate: Seminars
    4. Fellowship: Do not have a clue. Started fellowship meetings all over the state; Sparsely attended. We will never build a great Conference if people dread to come but we can bloom and grow if people desire to come.
  3. Remember our Passion– To Know Him and to Make Him Known.

Vance Havner told of a Civil War soldier who was asked how many enemy he had killed. “None”, he replied. “But I killed as many of them as they killed of me!”

Joshua 05:1-15 CROSS ROAD DECISIONS

The Children of Israel were at a Cross Road time. They had entered the Promised land by Faith and now they were about to begin the battles necessary to claim their possessions. First, however, God needed to point out some things to them and bring them to a place of Decision.

Next Sunday begins the 7th year of this pastoral term (13th total year) here at Grace. The Ministry and Mission of our Church under my leadership has been defined- Using as many means as possible to reach as many people as possible with the Gospel.

Now the Church stands at a Cross Roads. The Outreach Ministry occupies much of my time and effort and, as it continues to grow, it will continue to require a tremendous amount of my time. In order for the Church to grow along with the Ministry it will REQUIRE members that are willing to actively participate in, and take responsibility for, Church work.

This must be a group effort. It can’t be one Participator and many Spectators. Everyone must find a job and do that job to the best of their ability under God’s direction. The road will not always be easy but we know where we’re going and we know that God will meet our needs so we can launch out in confidence.

Our potential is only limited by our willingness to claim the Blessings God has prepared for us. The Promised land lies before us; God walks beside us, let us now claim our possessions!

Now that we’ve made the decision to go forward it’s time to prepare ourselves for the Battles to come. We don’t want to start with a bang and end up six months later with a bust! This road we now walk will require dedication, devotion, and determination. Let’s see how God directed Joshua at his Cross Roads Time.

1. Re-establish the Foundation – Circumcision, as a sign of God’s covenant, was begun again (Look truthfully at the Private Person). As a Church we must get back to the basics of Christianity- People being Born into the Body and then Cared for by the body until they can become active in the Body.

2. Remember the Lord’s Provision- Passover (The Rehearsal of pass blessings). Testimonies of God’s Pass and Present Blessings are necessary. They help the person testifying and the people hearing the testimony.

3. Responsibility becomes Real- Manna ceased and corn harvest began. Faith must begin to produce works. Our Christianity must go from the passive to the active stage. Members must find a need and meet it.

4. Renew your dedication to your Leader- Bow to the will of the Captain. You’re not following a Pastor or a Church. You owe allegiance to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Obey Him!!

Will you come to the Cross; and then sit the rest of your life trying to make a decision?? Or will you join with me as we claim the land for God? There’s blessings beyond belief out there. Let’s go claim them.

The Lords Prayer caused great confusion once because people did not want to change. Many of you are celebrating Graduation this month. This is a time of change in your life. Others will simply be out of school for the summer.

– Moses had died and the people had to move on.

– Fear of the Giants had been replaced by Faith in God

– Jordan had been crossed at flood stage by the power of God

1. Renew your commitment – (2-9) Circumcision, as a sign of God’s covenant, was begun again (Look truthfully at the Private Person). Christianity is not a Reformation, it is a Revolution!

2. Rehearse pass blessings- (10) Passover. Testimonies of God’s Pass and Present Blessings are necessary. They help the person testifying and the people hearing the testimony.

3. Realize your new responsibility- (11-12) Manna ceased and corn harvest began. Faith must begin to produce works. Our Christianity must go from the passive to the active stage. Members must find a need and meet it. Geese fly in a V formation because that gives them 71% more lift and makes it easier on everyone.

4. Renew your dedication to God as your Leader- (13-15) Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy Same thing God said to Moses! When the boat was about to sink the disciples had to TRUST JESUS. Whatever live sends your way you must learn to Trust Jesus.

Will you come to the Cross; and then sit the rest of your life trying to make a decision?? Or will you join with me as we claim the land for God? There’s blessings beyond belief out there. Let’s go claim them.

The fact that it’s a MESSAGE FROM GOD means we have numerous responsibilities:

1> We must HEAR what God is saying- We must be aware that we never become so busy until we ignore God’s Message to Us; regardless of how it comes- Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house (Ezekiel 12:2). Jesus talked over and over to His disciples about the fact that the people of His day had “ears to hear” and would not hear; and suffered pain and destruction as a result.

ARE YOU LISTENING TO WHAT GOD IS SAYING???

2> We must OBEY when God Speaks- And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams (1 Samuel 15:22).

We aren’t supposed to find out what God is saying simply to know what He is saying! We are to obey His instructions; whatever they are. ARE YOU DOING WHAT GOD IS SAYING???

3> We must RESPOND to God’s Call- Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me (Isaiah 6:8). Several times in scripture God said He called and we would not answer. What a sad, tragic thing to hear the call of God and then pretend we don’t hear. ARE YOU GOING WHERE GOD IS SENDING???

4> We must CHANGE at God’s Command- Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will repent him of the evil that he hath pronounced against you (Jeremiah 26:13). When God points out an area in our lives we must take the necessary steps to correct that situation. When God says to “clean our room” we’re not supposed to ask “WHY?”; we’re supposed. to say, “Yes, Sir.”

ARE YOUR EARS AFFECTING YOUR WALK??? I’m convinced that if you want to know God’s Will you simply have to listen. God has a way to communicate with you. The problem is in our ears that are hard to hear or our hearts that are harden in sin. Today you need to say, “Speak, Lord for thy servant hears.”

Joshua 07:10-12 SIN IN THE CAMP

The LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. — Josh 7:10-12

“Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: That which is devoted is among you, O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove it. — Josh 7:13

Why even prayer and Dedication doesn’t work sometimes.

Achan’s Sin- Disobeying God. Kept what God had said to destroy

Saul’s Sin- Disobeying God. Kept what God has said to destroy

How do we disobey God?

Robbing God of Time, Tithe, Talents

Failure to destroy old habits, allowing Satan to build Stongholds in our life, Replacing one sin in our life with another.

Joshua 07:- LORDLY LIMITATIONS

It is true that God is all powerful and all knowing and, as such, there is nothing that can limit Him. It is also true that God has so arranged things that certain actions by man limit what God is able to do. This is something that every Christian needs to be aware of so that they will not limit the Lord by their Character or Conduct.

People can limit the Lords ability to give the victory over our enemies by hidden sin in our life. The Children of Israel were unable to defeat the people of Ai because of the hidden sins of Achan (Joshua 7:-). The Psalmist declared that if we regard iniquity in our heart that the Lord will not regard our prayers (Ps 66:18). Sometimes we limit the Lords ability to make us triumphant Christians by the sins we hide in the closets of our heart.

People can limit the Lords ability to win the lost by hiding their light. Jesus said that our light was not to be put under a basket of busyness or under a bed of laziness (Luke 8:16). Yet, countless souls wander in the darkness of sin because we have hidden the light the Lord has entrusted to us. God has limited Himself to use our mouth and our money to reach the world for Christ and we limit Him when we fear to speak and when we fail to give.

The Children of Israel came to the very door of the promised land and then spend forty years dying in the desert because they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. (Ps 78:41). God wants to do a great work for you and through you. Dont limit the Lord by your disobedience or indifference.

Joshua 24:15 FISH OR CUT BAIT

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Jos 24:15).

There are many times in life that people make decisions that affect them, their families, and their future. Because of the long range implications of decisions some people try not to make them; they just “roll with the tide”, not doing anything until circumstances force them to take action. These people’s lives are always a crisis.

I use a phrase often, “It’s time to fish or cut bait”. Simply put it means it’s time to get involved or get out of the way! I want us to look at both sides of this saying today and make some definite decisions about our duty and dedication to the Lord.

I. CUT BAIT– The implication from my statement is that those who “cut bait” are wrong. The way the statement is used makes that correct but there are sometimes that sitting on the sideline is exactly what’s needed because it deals with our

DEDICATION- I once went fishing with a man who put me in the back of the boat so I could paddle while he fished! That’s the way it is sometimes; Some will fish and get the glory while others will cut bait and do the work. The great thing is that there is a Bible Principle here- …but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike (1 Sam 30:24).

The Ministry of this Church is to SERVE others for Christ’s sake. Several factors cause this to be so:

(1) The Personality of the Preacher. He thinks the greatest of all shall be servant of all and he wants to be the greatest.

(2) The Physical Condition of the People- Sickness causes many not to be able to function correctly. Circumstances send our members to other places (where they act as “Missionaries”).

But we still reach Multitudes of people with the Gospel of Christ thru the many ministries of this Church. People are saved, encouraged, enlightened, and enlisted in the work as a result.

God’s promise is sure, our reward is coming- He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him (Psa 126:6).

If you are called to be on the sideline, make sure you at least “Cut Bait”. Don’t sulk or quit; the fishermen need all the “Bait” they can get.

II. FISH There are times in life, however, that require definite decisions- Teen Sex, Marriage, dedication to Christ.

A) The Salvation Decision- Paul had to make a definite decision on the road to Damascus; The Philippians Jailor had to make a decision; and YOU must make a decision because He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy (Prov 29:1).

B) The Disciple Decision- Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God (John 6:60-69). When things got rough Job had to decide to trust God in spite of everything. As you face the trials of life you will come to a place where you will decide to “fish or cut bait” about serving God.

C) The Priority Decision- He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad (Mat 12:30). You must decide if you’ll fish for God or for the Devil. You can’t just be AGAINST SIN you must be FOR GOD- I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me (Rev 3:15-20).

WHAT DO I EXPECT OF PEOPLE WHO ATTEND GRACE FWB CHURCH??

First of all- Repent of Sins and Accept Christ as Savior. Then-

1. Faithfulness to every service

2. Participation according to ability

3. Consistent Living

4. Consistent Giving

Vance Havner tells of a soldier during the Civil war that was asked how many enemy he had killed. “None”, he replied, “But I got just as many of them as they got of me!” God calls us to either Fish or Cut Bait; He doesn’t call us to play in the water.

Joshua 24:15 CHOSE GOD

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:15).

25 million in Tokyo, only a few thousand had chosen God. 4,000 gods in India that people choose. Parts of Nepal where they have not heard the name of Jesus. Spain has chosen the traditions of the church over the truths of the Gospel. Brazil holds to voodoo and strange spirits.

When God created man He set boundaries for him and warned him of the consequences of violating those boundaries but God allowed Man to freely choose his own course of action. God could have made us do everything but He allows us to do anything!

This is because God calls us to be servants; not slaves. The nature of God is to allow those around Him to choose to choose Him. Even Satan and the angels who followed him were given the freedom and ability to choose to rebel against God or remain His loyal servants.

The fact that God allows us to be the “god” of our own fate has astonishing implications!

1) We can choose to ignore God- The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts (Psalms 10:4). Just remember: He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy (Proverbs 29:1).

2) We can choose to Deny God- They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate (Titus 1:16).

Just Remember: And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; (Romans 1:28).

But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven (Matthew 10:33).

3) We can choose to live a lukewarm Life- I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth (Revelation 3:15-16).

Just Remember: the kinds of rewards we receive from God- Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward (1 Corinthians 3:12-14).

3) We choose to choose God: Choose you this day

It will cost you- Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me (Matthew 16:24).

We are saved by Grace through Faith. That Faith is initiated by God but it must be activated by the individual when they “open the door” of their heart by asking God to forgive them of sins while at the same time giving God permission to come into their life and change who they were into what God wants them to be- For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:8-10).

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them (Genesis 1:26-27).

Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together (Isaiah 41:23).
