IITim 01:4-5 FAITH OF OUR MOTHERS

2 Tim 1:4‑5 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; 5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

I. THE FELLOWSHIP “Greatly desiring to see thee”

Paul is trying to help his “son” in the ministry as he faces the problems of life. Like a “Mother” Paul showed that a Child needs:

A) Compassion (Desiring to see thee). Longing to be with you.

B) Concern‑ (Mindful of thy tears) There is no love like a Mother’s love (Dad’s Hush Mom’s Hold). Mom, When is the last time you told your children you Loved them?? Children‑ When is the last time you thanked your mother for her concern??

C) Co-sharers (That I may be). I feel what happens to you as if it happened to me.

D) Challenge‑ (That I may be filled with Joy) Competition vs Challenge Self vs Service

II. THE FAITH‑ The leaning of your entire personality on God in Christ in absolute trust and confidence in his power, wisdom, and goodness. -Faith in God to save, supply, and satisfy

A) The Character of the Faith‑ unfeigned sincere (Without Wax) Non‑hypocritical. What are you at home?? Would Jesus want you for a Mom? Child?

B) The Place of Faith “in thee”

1. A Personal Faith‑ Not just talked but lived from inside out

2. A Permanent Faith‑ Not the faith of a minute but of a lifetime -2 Tim 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

C) The Duration of Faith‑Tried and Passed on thru the ages

1. Grandmother- Lois Prov 23:22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

2. Mother‑ Eunice (married a Greek Acts 16:1) Indications are that Timothy’s father was an unbeliever. Eunice had to raise Timothy under bad conditions but she had instilled in him the faith her mother had given her

Faith of our mother, hold it true
As morning star in Heaven’s blue
As peerless pearl from ocean’s bed
As guiding light seen far ahead
Faith of our Mothers, blessed faith,
It shall be ours to hold til death

III. THE PRACTICE OF FAITH. Mother:

Do you give your children goals to strive for?? Teaching them “Winning” is not always Victory

Do your children realize how parents rejoice in their rewards?? “Filled with Joy”

Most importantly, what kind of Faith are you giving your Child?? All you have to do to be a Mom is to Bear Children. But to be a Good Mom you must have Faith in Christ and pass that on to your children. (If you give your kids a clean home and clean clothes but feed them poison, what kind of Mom are you?? If you give your Children this world’s goods but don’t prepare them to face the judgment of God- are you a good mother??

II TIM 1:8-11 YOUR PURPOSE IN GOD’S PLAN

Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles (2 Timothy 1:8-11).

In his Last Letter, the Apostle Paul seeks to encourage his “son in the gospel”, Timothy to do great things for a great God. He realizes his time is almost over (For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing 2 Timothy 4:6-8) and he seeks to encourage Timothy to continue pursuing God’s Purpose for His Life and to not be discouraged by the things his “father in the faith”, Paul is enduring.

He cautions Timothy about PRIDE’S HINDRANCE: Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner:

He encourages Timothy to PARTAKE OF AFFLICTIONS TO ADVANCE THE GOSPEL: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

He reminds Timothy about the PURPOSE OF HIS CALLING: Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began

He declares to Timothy the PERSON OF HIS PREACHING: But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles

It is TIMOTHY’S PURPOSE that I want us to look at.

Purpose must Begin with Salvation (Who hath saved us). Your Heart must be right before your Purpose will be right.

Purpose must Come from God (Called us). Education, Dedication, and the Influence of others can help you but Purpose’s “fire in your heart” must come from God.

Purpose’s Goal must be about God’s Glory (an holy calling).

Purpose must not be what WE can do but what GOD wants to do thru us (not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace)

Purpose must be about ETERNAL Objectives; not TEMPORARY Accomplishments (which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began).

If your life is without Purpose, Plan, or Peace then you need to come today and accept God’s Pardon.

If you want your life to have Positive Purpose and Eternal value remember this: If your Life Purpose comes from God YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING GOD’S WANTS YOU TO ACCOMPLISH because HIS Power is at work in what you seek to do [Example of little boy saying, “Look at what I am doing” while standing inside and holding to wheel barrow handles while Dad pushed the wheel barrow filled with house foundation concrete!]

IITim 01:12 PAUL’S PAIN ENDURING PRINCIPLES

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day (2 Timothy 1:12).

The Purpose in his Pain: For the which CAUSE I also suffer these things

The Pride of his Confidence: Nevertheless I am not ashamed

The Principles Paul Rested In: for (based on)

The Positive: I KNOW

The Person: Whom

The Promise: I have Believed (trusted)

The Persuasion: I am Persuaded (convinced)

The Peace: That HE is able to Keep

The Pledge: That which I have Committed to Him

The Power and Pardon: Against that Day (of Righteous Judgment)

IITim 01:12 KNOWLEDGE THAT KEEPS YOU FROM CRYING AND QUITTING

Sometimes it just seems that burdens are too heavy to bear and all seems lost. You’ve tried everything you know to handle the situation but still the problems remain and the pressures increase. It is one of those times when it seems all you want to do is cry for a day or quit for a lifetime!.

What can possibly help you during such a time? What can keep you going when all you want to do is lie in the middle of your bed and let the tears of frustration and failure come rolling down? Times like these are not times for cotton candy clichés but, instead, call for steak and potato answers. This is the time you need to forget about all the things you aren’t sure of and grasp a few things that you KNOW for certain and allow them to keep you steady in the midst of the storm. After all, when the wind and rain have ceased, you will find that the storms can’t move these rocks (Glory!).

1) The first thing you must KNOW is that no matter how you feel, and no matter the circumstances, your Salvation is real and Steadfast- (2 Tim 1:12) For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. This is a basic bedrock conviction that is the foundation for all others things in your life. Don’t allow tears or trials to blind you to this foundational truth.

And, KNOWING I am saved allows me to KNOW that I am special to God- (Psa 4:3) But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. I want to cry and quit when I feel lonely and unloved. I can’t feel this way when I KNOW I am special enough to God for Him to send His Son to die for me.

2) Secondly, I must KNOW that Circumstances are not out of God’s control- (Rom 8:28) And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. They may be out of my understanding but they are never out of God’s Plan and they can never separate us from God’s love- (Rom 8:38-39) For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, {39} Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3) Thirdly, I need to KNOW that all of my Efforts have meaning- (1 Cor 15:58) Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. What a difference it makes in depression when we realize that God does not always pay up on Friday; but He will pay one day, so my Effort is Important- (1 Cor 9:24) Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

And it is also a great help to KNOW that I don’t really KNOW the value of what I do until Heaven- (1 Cor 13:9-12) For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. {10} But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. {11} When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. {12} For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

4) It is also a source of encouragement to KNOW that Ups and Downs are part of every Christian’s life, even the great apostle Paul– (Phil 4:12-13) I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. {13} I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

God did not promise that I would never have problems but He did promise that He would give strength for every task through my relationship with Christ. That is a tremendous principle to KNOW.

5) And it is a great source of Motivation to me to KNOW that it is worth any cost to reach the Lost for Jesus- (James 5:20) Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. It is much easier to go on when I KNOW how important it is that I do my part in reaching a lost world with the life changing, destiny altering, Gospel of Christ. We are not playing mind games or doing “make do” work; we are engaged in the most important occupation in all the world; telling people about the deliverance they can have through Faith in Christ.

Therefore, when I Know all this, I find that today’s drudgery can’t quench tomorrow’s hope- (2 Cor 4:16-18) For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. {17} For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; {18} While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Looking at those things that clouded my eyes with tears and made my cross seem too heavy to bear in the light of all the things I KNOW causes me to see that they are matters of little consequence. Satan tried to make all my problems and persecutions seem like giants in my mind but when they were exposed to the light of God’s word and the comfort of the Holy Spirit they turned into only shadows with no real substance.. In fact, I KNOW I can handle them now by leaning on the Lord and trusting in His provision.

What a difference it makes when you stop allowing the world’s confusion and chaos to dominate you and instead rely on the wonderful things you KNOW as a child of God. Tears become cheers, life becomes abundant, and quitting is the last thing on your mind. So rest in what you KNOW ABOUT GOD and stop allowing Satan to control you with threats and intimidation. After all, Satan is a liar and the father of all lies and that is not who you want controlling your life.

IITim 01:12 ASHAMED OR ASSURED

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. (2 Timothy 1:12)

Many people would have been ashamed of Paul when he wrote this letter. How would you like to come to church today and hear that your preacher, who had been serving time in jail, had just been sentenced to be executed!! And when you called the main religious organization to see if one of them could do anything you were told that most of the established religions of the day thought Paul was a trouble maker and they had no problem with his execution.

I. THINGS THAT SHOULD CAUSE US SHAME:

A) SIN MAKES US ASHAMED- And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. — Ezra 9:6 (Adam and Eve were both naked and not ashamed when they were without sin- Gen 2:25)

B) LACK OF CHRISTIAN COURAGE SHOULD MAKE US ASHAMED- Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. — Mark 8:38

C) FAILURE TO STUDY THE BIBLE WILL BRING US SHAME- Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. — 2 Tim 2:15

II. THINGS WE SHOULD NEVER BE ASHAMED OF:

A) THE GOSPEL OF GOD- For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. — Rom 1:16

B) PERSECUTION FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS SAKE- Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. — 1 Pet 4:16

III. THINGS THAT CAN ELIMINATE BEING ASHAMED: For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. — 2 Tim 1:12

A) Know Who You Believe- For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. — Rom 10:11

A PERSONAL Knowledge of Christ

A PRACTICAL Knowledge of Christ

B) Trust God to Take Care of your Future as well as forgive your past- I am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

PLAINLY DECLARE your stand with God- The Heros of Faith in Hebrews 11 all publically stood for God and said this world was not their home- But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. — Heb 11:16

ABIDE in Him so you will not be ashamed when He Comes- And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. — 1 John 2:28

IITim 01:1-18 ENDURANCE

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; [Family Faith] When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. [Fear Faith] For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; [Functional Faith] Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. [Foundation Faith] For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. [Friend Faith] This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

• Godly Examples inspire us to Endure

• The Work of Christ enables us to Endure

• Christian Community encourages us to Endure

IF YOU COULD PASS ONE PRINCIPLE FROM YOUR CHRISTIAN LIFE TO THE TEEN CLASS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

THREE PRINCIPLES TO HELP YOU ENDURE:

Patience: A good racer learns that his Stops as well as his Speed are important (See Is 40:31). He must learn to trust and depend on his “pit crew”. In the same way a Christian must learn to work WITH other Christians as well as work OUT his salvation

Promise: Faith in the ability to run the race and hope for a prize at the end of the race are vital when a racer “hits the wall” and everything in him screams for him to quit- Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2).

Perseverance: A Racer must learn the race is not over until it is over- And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved (Matthew 10:22).

Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: (Mark 13:35). Words, Actions, Thoughts, Companions, Habits.

IITim 02:2 THE CHRISTIAN WORKER

We live in a world that constantly pressures us and demands responsibility of us. We are constantly told that we must buy a certain car, or soft drink; wear a certain style of clothes; and conform to society’s ideals. From among all this din of confusion and contradiction my job as Pastor is to get you to see the Necessary instead of the Needless.

In order to do that there are 2 Basic Principles you must be aware of: (1) EVERY Person is either Saved or Lost depending on their faith in the shed Blood of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. and (2) EVERY Saved person must take up his cross and accept his place in God’s Plan. This Second Principle involves a number of things- There is no way I can cover them all in one sermon but I do want to expose one aspect of your responsibility and cause you to repent of your failure and accept your place in God’s Plan.

As Christians we have a responsibility to our family (I Tim 5:8 If any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel) This means we have a responsibility to see that our Children are taught correctly- Ps 78:5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children.

But we not only have a responsibility to our Family, we also have an obligation to the cause of Christ- II Tim 2:2 The things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. This is the Obligation of the CHRISTIAN WORKER; and it is this responsibility that I want to address today.

I. OUR OBLIGATION: Matt 28:19‑20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Three Obligations are given:

1. GO According to an article in “People to People” (A United Methodist Publication) 70% of those who come to Sunday School the first time come because someone invited them.

People come to Sunday School because of: Friends 48.2% Transferred/moved 18.2% Relatives 14.8% Walked in/other 12.0% Pastor 6.5% Evangelistic Effort .3%

2. Make Disciples- Teach all nations about Christ

3. Teach Them to observe ALL things- Put Christianity into practice.

II. OUR QUALIFICATIONS:

What to look for in Christian workers-

1. They should be deeply concerned and dedicated Christians- not the blind leading the blind. Children’s souls are too important to trust to Lost, Lazy, or Lukewarm Teachers!!!

2. They should be emotionally mature- not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. I Tim 3:6 Able to deal with Problems and Personalities that are a normal part of dealing with People.

3. They should possess the ability to work harmoniously with others- Realizing that all Christians are part of the Body of Christ and each part needs the other. Some are hands and some are feet but all function at the direction of the Head.

4. They should have a loving spirit- a man that says he loves God and does not love his brother is a liar. When you work for no Pay and little Praise you must be constrained by Love to do your job. “He who has love in his heart has spurs in his side”.

5. They should have the ability to compromise on Preferences, but not on Principles- You don’t care if the Preacher’s Bible is Blue but you are greatly concerned that he preaches from the Bible.

When You do what you do; have you done anything with what you do?

THERE ARE 3 QUESTIONS EACH CHRISTIAN WORKER SHOULD ASK:

1. Is my Living God Exalting- Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

2. Is my Message Christ Centered- And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me (John 12:32). Christ is our Message; and He is a Person; not Just Principles

3. Is my Teaching Spirit empowered- Christians are BORN AGAIN not remodeled. Sinners are DEAD in trespasses and sins- they don’t need new clothes, they need LIFE. 1CO 2:1‑5 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

III. OUR GOAL: Col 1:28 (Christ) Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus;

Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethern.

God has a Plan for Everyone- It is not the will of God that ANY be lost but that all come to the knowledge of the Truth

God has a Place for Everyone- Believers in the Body of Christ, Unbelievers abide under the wrath of God (John 3:36). WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES WHEN A TEACHER REALIZES THEY HAVE TO ANSWER TO GOD AS “BOSS” AND NOT THE CHURCH.

God’s Power works on anyone who will Believe- Paul was the “Chief of Sinners” (I Tim 1:15). God’s power can set the demon possessed man free, satisfy the thirst of the adulterous Samaritan woman, and even save self-righteous Nicodemus. And the only things needed to activate this power is Faith.

God is looking for people that will not only commit to Him for Salvation but also for Service. Christ’s death on the Cross paid for our Sins and now He expects each of us to take up our Cross and follow him.

Is Christianity a “Life Insurance Policy” for you or a Life???

IITim 02:3 A SOLDIER’S DUTY

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 2:3)

Dedicated to His Duty- And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing (2 Sam 11:11)

Separated to his task- No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier (2 Timothy 2:4)

Leaves a meaningful Memorial- Wall broken down around cemetery and tomb stone stolen where Sheila Hanna was buried so missionary Carlisle Hanna’s family built the Sheila Marie Hanna Church which is now full to capacity with 31 people baptized recently.

IITim 02:16-19 FOUNDATIONS

Police were so totally baffled by the latest string of burglaries that they brought in a clairvoyant. This man professed to have had stunning success in locating kidnapped children, missing persons, lost wallets, pets that had strayed off, etc. The police welcomed his assistance and told him to come down to the station. Unfortunately the clairvoyant was not able to help them. He could not find the police station!!!

Sad to say, that is the way people are looking at Preachers and Churches today. In the midst of Scandal and Sin, men are beginning to ask if the claims of Christianity are simply talk. And even in the Church, many are beginning to question some of the Practices and Principles that are being used.

First of all, that is not necessarily bad. God does not condemn Doubt; He does condemn Unbelief- Unbelief WILL NOT believe; Doubt is seeking something TO believe. God expects us to examine what we are basing our eternal destiny on- and if it’s of God it will stand the test and come out stronger than ever.

So today I want us to look at What we are building our lives on, How we are Building our lives, and the Purpose of building our lives a certain way.

I. THE PROPER FOUNDATION “Where should you build?”

A) The Necessity of Having a proper foundation –

1. For Stability- Ps 17:3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? I once chased a wild goose into some quicksand and found it a place of no Stability- the more I struggled the worst I sank. That’s what’s happening to many people today. They’ve chased Life’s “Wild Geese” and have ended up struggling all the time; and sinking deeper and deeper. They need something stable to build on.

This is where the ministry of the Church is so important. Without Moral Guidelines from the Church we go into an “anything goes”, lawless society that quickly become anarchy. In the midst of the “Swamp of Quicksand” that Society flounders in we proclaim Christ as the foundation People need in their Personal life, in their Professional life, and in their Public life. (The back of the Parsonage was built on land that once was a pit. In order to keep the wall from sinking after the work was completed the men had to dig a very deep foundation. Sadly today, in many lives, people do not build their lives on the proper foundation and soon their “house” begins to tilt and crack).

2. For Security- Luke 6:47‑49 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built a house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. You can’t see the foundation of a house but it’s soon apparent when the storms and rains come. I once put up an antenna with a faulty foundation; thankfully it didn’t fall while I was on it, but it did fall during the first big wind. Many people are “religious” on the outside but don’t have the right foundation and one day everything they’ve built will come crashing down on top of them.

B) The Test of a True Foundation- II Tim 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. Two things are listed here as “Seals” to allow us to know that the foundation we are building on is God’s Foundation and not a false foundation (as told about in vs 16‑18):

1. RELATIONSHIP- “The Lord Knoweth Them that are His” Christianity is not a “Religion”; it’s a Person- Christ. If all you have are Rules instead of Relationship then you need to re-examine your foundation.

2. RIGHTEOUSNESS- “Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity”. Even the World knows that a Christian is supposed to live right. The day after I was saved I knew it was wrong to cheat on my homework even though I had never heard a sermon on it. A “Religion” that keeps you in Sin instead of delivering you from Sin’s Power needs to be thrown away like a “Hot potato”.

II. THE PLAN YOU BUILD WITH- “What to Build” 1CO 3:10‑15 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. God has given us the privilege of building upon the foundation He has ordained. We pick the materials and then find the design He has in store for us. But we are given an amazing freedom in the building process.

You must build with the correct material- not wood, hay or stubble. Paul told Timothy some things that make good building materials- I Tim 6:17‑19 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

III. THE PURPOSE OF BUILDING- EPH 2:19‑22 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. You’re not building for this world’s approval. You should be building on the Proper Foundation, with the Proper Material, for the Glory of God. Ask yourself these questions today:

WHAT TYPE OF FOUNDATION ARE YOU BUILDING ON TODAY? WHAT ARE YOU BUILDING WITH? WHO ARE YOU BUILDING FOR??

IITim 02:20-21 SOMEONE GOD CAN USE

II Tim 2:20‑21 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and of earth: and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

As we take the time today to rejoice with our graduates, I want to talk with them, and you, about your purpose in life. The Psalmist says in Psalm 1 that the “Godly” are like a tree planted by the river and the “ungodly” are like the wind driven chaff- that is, the “Godly” have roots and fruit (Purpose to life) while the “ungodly” simply drift with the wind- and end up being burned!!

With that in mind I want you to see how your life can be the best it can be now and eternally blissful in the years to come. I think we can do that is you will keep 3 words in mind- Honor, Dreams, and Service

I. HONOR- Paul told young preacher, Timothy, that in a house some vessels were to be honored and some dishonored. He goes on to describe the conditions that need to be met before a vessel can be honored- but he does so with an assumption; that Timothy has already confessed his sins and accepted Christ as Saviour. If YOU haven’t made that decision then you need to do so immediately.

This decision about Salvation means 4 Things:

1. Saved FROM the guilt, the doom, the stain, and the dominion of sin. 2. Saved BY the sovereign grace of God, and the precious Blood of Christ. 3. Saved FOR the transmission of His light and the Praise of His Glory. 4. Saved UNTO all the blessings of God in this world and the world to come.

Sin is “missing the Mark” of God’s will for your life. Salvation is trusting Christ’s sacrifice to pay your sin debt and then living you life in accordance with God’s will. There is no greater Joy or Contentment than finding yourself at Peace with God and with yourself (To me that is the real definition of “Success”). So first of all be a person that God CAN honor.

II. DREAMS- A “Vessel” can’t dream but people can and Paul is telling Timothy to “dream” about becoming a vessel of Honor instead of dishonor. It is this “Dream” that motivates men to strive to be the best they can be. When you lose your “Dream” you give in to Discouragement and Despair- and usually end up trying to “run away” from life thru Drugs, Drink, or the accumulation of “Things”.

Hold on to your dreams- George Lucas had a dream about a science fiction movie that he thought would be successful. Unfortunately others did not share this dream. Finally he got 20th Century Fox to guarantee him $10 million dollars; but the rest he had to raise himself. By the time the movie was finished Lucas was broke and exhausted — so far Star Wars has grossed over $750 million dollars! Joseph also had a dream- He dreamed that one day his brothers and father would bow at his feet.

For that dream his brothers sold him into slavery and it seemed it would never come true. During his slavery he helped people in jail with their dreams and the Pharaoh with his dream before finally coming to the place where his dream came true. But he never gave up!!

Be sure you have a dream and not a nightmare!! One of the great Vikings decided to build the biggest and strongest ships ever. It was a splendid looking vessel that could carry over 500 persons as well as full armaments. The only problem was that when it was launched it immediately sank to the bottom of the ocean.

Black Poet Lanston Hughes put it this way, “hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.” It’s surprising how others will accept our dreams after they come true. A young lady recently wrote to her former fiancé: Dear Jimmy- No words can express the great unhappiness I’ve felt since breaking our engagement. Please say you’ll take me back. I love you, I love you, I love you! Yours forever, Marie. PS And congratulations on winning the state lottery.

III. SERVICE- How do we get this Honor and fulfil our Dreams? By becoming a Vessel God can use. That means we:

A) Purge yourself from some things- the vessels of dishonor in vs 20 (Don’t mix the “dirty” dishes with the clean!) Come out from among them and be ye separate saith the Lord. I Thess 4:3‑4 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; That makes us:

1. Vessels unto honor- worthy of God’s praise

2. Sanctified- Set apart for God.

3. Meet for the master’s use- appropriate

B) Prepare for good work- ready to be used.

There are 4 things that can Control a person’s life:

1. Society- Leaves a stain on the outside When Society controls, you become like the world- and one day it will be destroyed by the Fire of God.

2. Self- Leaves a stain on the inside. When Self controls, you only rise as high as your own feelings and are constantly defeated by your own frustrations.

3. Circumstances- “Cracks” the vessel. When Circumstances control, you build a beautiful house on a sandy foundation with a “Hurricane” on the Horizon.

4. Savior- Cleans and uses the vessel. When Christ controls, you have a Perfect Plan for your life and a solid foundation against any “Storms”.

Perhaps there are some here today that are:

1. Dirty Vessels- God can Wash you clean

2. Dreamless Vessels- God is the Master Potter, He can remake you into a vessel He can use. Jer 18

3. Deceitful Vessels- Paul said that Christians were to be “Sincere” in their work for God (Phil 1:10). The word “Sincere” means “Without Wax”. When a man would make a vessel some of them would develop a crack. Many of them would put wax over this crack to deceive people- but when hot water hit it the fault was made clear. So one day God will put our work to the fire to see if there are any faults.

Are you someone God can use? You are if you’re Saved and an Available Vessel.

IITim 2:26 SATAN’S TRAP

And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will (2 Timothy 2:26).

When we lived in Florida we had a lot of problem with mice getting into the Parsonage. One night as I was preparing for bed I saw a mouse go scurrying across the floor. I baited a rat trap and set it in a corner and the next morning I had caught the mouse. As I was carrying him out. I noticed that he died with a piece of cheese in his mouth. I thought to myself that if he would have just left that piece of cheese alone he’d be alive today– and God spoke to my heart about people who are caught in Satan’s traps.

THE BAIT– There must be something to attract you to the Trap.

1. Something you want- Satan used all his resources when he appealed to Christ. He appealed to the Lust the Flesh (‘Food from stones to satisfy hunger); the Pride Life (Cast self from temple to show the world how great you are); and the Lust of the eyes (All you see if you will only worship Satan). Today men are lured to sin to satisfy Self, exalt Self, and please Self. That is why men must come by the Cross (die to self) on the way to Christ.

2. Something you think is better than other things (This mouse had passed up a bag of pecans to nibble on cheese). With everything in the world at her disposal Eve thought she was missing something and disobeyed to get it. (Man’s craving for knowledge makes anything that is mysterious or off limits very tempting).

THE TRIGGER– Something to cause the Trap to operate.

1. The Bait draws you to the Trap, the Trigger springs it. Pressure or Problems are good “triggers”. You would not normally fall but you had a fight with your wife; or problems at work; or desire to be accepted into the Group; etc.

2. Satan does not always Spring the Trap the first time- Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.(Ecclesiastes 8:11). When I was a boy I used to trap birds. My trap was a box held up by a stick with a string leading to where I was hiding. One of the early lessons I learned was “you can catch 2 birds with 1 biscuit if you will just be patient.”

THE CAUGHT “RAT”- Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? (Proverbs 6:27). But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out (Numbers 32:23).

Just as Satan does not always spring·the trap the first time; God does not always “settle up on Friday”. But Payday will come someday and you’ll find yourself in that vast multitude crying, “I didn’t think I’d get caught”. Everyone thinks they can “eat the cheese” without springing the trap; and multitudes of Families, Fortunes, and Souls have been lost as a result.

For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men (Jeremiah 5:26).

IITim 03:- WACO WACKIES

In the NIV Bible, verse 1 reads “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days”. These terrible times have become increasingly apparent in recent days. Drugs, Divorce, War, and chaos have become the norms of today’s society.

Sadly, it’s not just that the world is falling apart, it is also seen in the Religious world– From the horrible fires of Waco and the deadly kool-aid of Jonestown to the increasing number of False Prophets and Fallen Preachers who are littering the landscape.

The news media is using this to fire salvo after salvo at the fanatical fringe of Fundamental Christians; and you can rest assured that soon the shots will past the fringes into the very foundations of our beliefs-A law that bars men from Picketing an Abortion Clinic will effect Preaching about Abortion being wrong. Homosexual marches will go from congress into churches as laws require us to hire them.

As Christians, we can throw up our hands in despair; or continue to trust that God’s word is still true, His plan is still at work, and we are to faithfully follow until He comes. I plan on sticking with God.

But that does not mean I must blindly bury my head in the Sand. In fact, more than ever, it means I must recognize wrong doctrine and apply Biblical principles to today’s problems. I don’t want to hold up in a gun factory with a Waco Wacky waiting to burn to death. I want to live right in this world; and be prepared to go to the next. That means I must learn to identify the wrong so I can maintain the right.

Paul goes into great detail in this Third Chapter to show us what Characteristics we should avoid; and what conduct we should emulate. I pray that God will use it to help you identify false followers; and determine to maintain consistent Christian Character.

I. THEIR CHARACTER: For men shall be (Watch for these in CHURCH) 3:1-5

1. lovers of their own selves- Self Centered

2. covetous- Aroused by a greedy desire for wealth

3. boasters, proud- conceited, prideful, arrogant, vain

4. blasphemers- disrespectful to God

5. disobedient to parents- Undisciplined

6. unthankful- Ungrateful

7. unholy- Profane

8. Without natural affection- Callous and inhuman, without love

9. trucebreakers- Unforgiving, Not able to appease

10. false accusers- slanders

11. incontinent- Without Self control, Intemperate, no Stability

12. fierce- uncontrolled, brutal

13. despisers of those that are good- Hate the good

14. Traitors- Treacherous, betrayers

15. heady- Rash

16. highminded- inflated with self conceit

17. lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God- Lovers of sensual pleasures and vain amusements

18. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof- Their conduct belies the genuineness of their profession.

FROM SUCH TURN AWAY- We are not to Accommodate or Associate with these people (Not Isolation but Separation. We’re in the water, we just don’t want the water in the boat). 2 John 9‑11 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

II. THEIR CONVERTS: 6-9

A) Sought by Stealth– Creep into houses

B) Captured by (4 Areas false Prophets manipulate people)

1> Guilt- Laden with sins

2> Lusts- Desires; for Sex, Money, Happiness, etc

3> Desire for Knowledge- Ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth– trying every new doctrine or idea that comes along to find a quick, easy, and cross-less way to Happiness and Heaven.

4> Demonstrated Power (8-9)- Jannes and Jambres were the magicians who opposed Moses when he asked Pharaoh to let Israel go. They were able to duplicate several of the first miracles that Moses did.

Today, many people are led astray because someone is able to perform several “miracles”. They forget that Satan also has Power; power he willingly will demonstrate to get you to follow one of his false prophets.

These false religious leaders take advantage of the problems people have, and promise them quick and easy solutions. They “worm their way in” and soon control people’s lives, their loyalty, their money, and their service. But their Converts aren’t changed, they’re simply chained to the false prophet through guilt, lust, and manipulation. Only the Cross sets men free.

III. THEIR CORRECTION 10-17

A) Godly Preachers: The Example of Paul- “You have known”

1> His Beliefs- My Doctrine. Many Preacher today use a mixture of psychology, success motivation, and personality; with just enough Bible thrown in to make it sound Religious.

There are Three good ways to Judge if what a Preacher says is true:

1. The Content of his message; his “Gospel”. Not just a “sound bite”

2. The Context of his Scriptures. Does he use only parts of the Bible

3. The Character of the Man. Check his behavior as well as beliefs.

2> His Behavior-

Manner of Life- The Way He Lived

Purpose- The Goal He sought. See Phil 3:10

Faith- The Principles He Practiced. His Faith guided his works.

Longsuffering- The Patience He showed under difficult situations

Charity- The Love He Lived, as shown in his treatment of others.

Patience- His endurance based on his trust in God’s Plan

Persecutions, Afflictions- Problems that come as a result of your following Christian Principles- See I Peter 4:14-16

B) Guiding Principles of Scripture– (Jesus defeated Satan by quoting the Word of God. The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God)

1> vs 14 Continue with the Scriptures in spite of changes in Society (How can we preach that Homosexuality and drunkenness are a sin if science says it is caused by a wrong gene?)

2> vs 15 Commitment to Bible Training all your life. Don’t just read the Bible, KNOW the Bible. Establish Bible Principles that will last a life time.

3> vs 16-17 Confident in Scripture’s Trustworthiness. God gave us ALL we need to be ALL we are supposed to be. No man needs to (or Should- see Rev 22:18-19) add to it. God has given us EVERYTHING we need to know how to Come to Him, Live for Him, and spent eternity with Him.

Don’t be Misled by Waco Wackies or Worldly Pressures. Heaven and Hell are real. The ONLY WAY to avoid Hell is to repent of sins and trust in Christ. Make that commitment today.

IITim 3:12 EXPECT OPPOSITION

Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:12).

Danger of not expecting Opposition: And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended (Mark 4:16-17).

I. Persecution Principle: Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you (Matthew 5:10-12). The enemy of the world (Jas 4:4) can expect opposition from the world because we try to divert them from the Broad way into the Narrow way.

2. Partaker Principle: Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also (John 15:20). Real Teaching must Challenge people to change; and people do not like to change.

3. Personal Principle: For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews (1 Thessalonians 2:13-14). We are personal representatives of a Real God battling a real Devil for the souls of men. We can expect opposition.

IITim 03:14-17 THE GREAT GOSPEL WE PROCLAIM

It is a Great Day to be in a Great Church with Great People talking about a Great God who is able to do Great Things in your life.

I just returned from a 2 week stay in India with Missionary Carlisle Hanna. God is doing Great works with this Great Man of God as souls are being saved and churches are being built at an amazing speed. In 2009 we had 144 organized Churches, 206 House Churches (preparing to be organized), and 305 Preaching points where we are seeking to establish a church. We have 21 Ordained Ministered, 5 Licensed Ministers, 17 Evangelists, and 91 Church planters. Last year we baptized 466 (One was killed the day he was baptized and his wife and child were killed the next morning. One 17 year old was dragged thru the village where he was pelted with cow dung and stones before being disowned by his family). When you preach in India, the land of 400,000 Hindi “gods” and a fast growing Moslem population you need to know what you believe and why you believe it in order to stand up and boldly proclaim that the Gospel you proclaim is the only true Gospel and the God we serve is the only true and living God.

Paul wrote to Timothy as he was preparing to die and expressed the heart of what we need to know and proclaim today – But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy 3:14-17).

Today I come to proclaim this Great Gospel about Jesus Mighty to Save in the hopes that it will point you out of your sins and into the abundant life God so graciously offers. There are many “gospels” being proclaimed today but the True Gospel is one based on:

  1. A Scriptural Message- From a child though has known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which in Jesus Christ. I come to you today as a messenger of the King. I am not here to promote my cause or proclaim my thoughts. My goal is to proclaim God’s word for God’s glory in order to draw you to faith in, and service for, the Lord God.
  2. A Significant Message- [Profitable]. The Gospel of God will change your destination and transform your character [Example of my family].
  3. A Sufficient Message- That you may be perfect (complete), thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Jugat and Ruth are building a church at the door of a Moslem Children’s Home with 1000 boys being trained to be Moslem Priest and Extremist. One of our Churches is within a stone’s throw of an Al-Qaida Training Center. They proclaim that there is only one god and Allah is his name and Mohammed is his prophet. We proclaim that there is only one god and Jehovah is his name and Jesus is His Son.
  4. A Saving Message- The Scriptures are able to make you wise unto salvation. God wants to Transform your life so dynamically until Jesus called it being “Born Again”. God wants to save you from sin and self and Satan. The message we proclaim is “Faith in Jesus Christ”. That is what will save you and that is what will keep you.

Story of James Dobson’s son, Ryan, hanging from the tailgate of a truck crying, “Somebody help the Boy”. God is the somebody who can help the Boy.

IITim 03:16-17 THE WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD

Never have so many people, who have so many time saving devices, spent so much time trying to find the time to do what they need to do! If a product doesn’t have “Instant” on it anymore then it has little chance of being bought. No one has time to do things the LONG way. They want Headline News, Condensed books, and family meetings to last no longer than 1 to 2 minutes.

`In the midst of all this stress and anxiety, it’s easy for people to begin “Cutting God short” also. I want us today to see Four Principles that will enable us to enjoy the Abundant Life that God promised us. These Principles are based on heeding the “Whole Counsel of God”. They will turn you from a Convenient Christian (Who only serves God during a Convenient time) to a Committed Christian.

I. READ AND HEED ALL THE BIBLE

II. PUT WORKS WITH YOUR FAITH

III. DON’T JUST HOUSE THE HOLY SPIRIT- BE FILLED

IV. DON’T JUST LEARN ABOUT SALVATION- ACCEPT CHRIST

I. READ AND HEED ALL THE BIBLEAll Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tim 3:16-17). (P1623)

About the only time People have for God’s Word anymore is that five minute time after you brush your teeth; just before sleep overtakes you. During that time they want God to comfort them, guide them, develop them as Christians, and tell them how to live in a world gone mad!! So they read a Psalm (They’re short) or part of a New Testament Chapter. The rest of the Bible is hard and boring. Leave that for Preachers and Sunday School Teachers.

What if Public Schools only taught one Course, English; because they thought math was hard and history was boring? What if Mom only cooked one food because it was easy and she didn’t have the time to be bothered with cooking more?

When people only read the “Fluff and Favorites” of the Bible they don’t develop as Christians. Their Christian life is sick and weak because they eat only desert and never get any exercise.

That is why we are stressing that EVERYONE IN THE CHURCH READ THE ENTIRE BIBLE THIS YEAR. I have built most of our messages this year around our Bible readings. I have spent over $1000 in Bibles so everyone could have one. Why? Because I believe it’s important.

THERE ARE LESSONS TO LEARN: For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope (Rom 15:4).

THERE ARE WARNING TO HEED: These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come (1 Cor 10:11).

The Old Testament provides the historical background by which we are able to understand the New. The New Testament contains over 600 references or allusions to the Old (The Old Testament WAS THE BIBLE to Jesus and the Disciples!!).

Do you listen to ALL God has to say; or do you just pick out a favorite saying every now and then? The Whole Counsel of God is the ENTIRE BIBLE. Don’t short change yourself, and God, by neglecting most of it.

II. PUT WORKS WITH YOUR FAITHWhat good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead (James 2:14-17). I know that the Just shall live by his faith. But if his faith doesn’t effect the way he lives then something is wrong with his faith!

With the Mind we LEARN God’s Truth

With the Heart we LOVE God’s Truth

With the Will we LIVE God’s Truth

Christians who say they believe God but never put any Christian works with their faith are only fooling themselves. The Christianity you talk about on Sunday Morning better be lived on Monday Morning.

III. DON’T JUST HOUSE THE HOLY SPIRIT; BE FILLEDDo not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph 5:18-20)

Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. As such, we should not defile it or unequally yoke it with sin. But it’s not enough to just have a house for the Holy Spirit. We want Him to move in and take complete control. This will give us:

Power- To try to do the work of God without the power of God is like trying to empty the ocean with a pitchfork; you’ll work your self to death and never accomplish anything. The Power you need to work and witness is found in allowing the Holy Spirit to control you. This filling is not a silly performance but a life changing power.

Pleasure- When the Holy Spirit is in Control He brings that Full Joy we long for. This will cause us to “speak to ourselves in songs, hymns and spiritual songs.” People will see the difference in your life; and want what you’ve got!!

Prayer- Helps us with intercessions that cannot be uttered. Many times we don’t know now to pray. All we can see is our pain or our problem. The Holy Spirit can help us pray for God’s Will to be done.

IV. DON’T JUST LEARN ABOUT SALVATION; ACCEPT CHRIST– Multitudes of people have heard the plan of Salvation but never have come to the person of Salvation- Christ. Salvation is not a game you play but a life you live. It means we turn from the control of Sin and Satan and allow Christ to forgive our sin and guide our life. It’s the best thing in this world and makes all the difference imaginable in the next.

You know how to be saved; why don’t you come to Christ RIGHT NOW? How sad it will be to spend eternity in Hell crying, “I knew how to be saved. I knew I ought to be saved. But I never got saved!”

IITim 04:6-18 THINGS THAT MATTER

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words. At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen (2 Tim 4:6-18).

While reading through “my prophet”, Jeremiah, the other day I came across an interesting statement- Jer 15:1-2 Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth. And it shall come to pass, if they say unto thee, Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith the LORD; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity (Jer 15:1-2). Rather a harsh statement for God to make. It shows how serious He takes the sins of His people; and how heart breaking they are to Him.

In this statement God is basically saying to Jeremiah that NO ONE and NOTHING can stop the death of this people. What if we could know the same thing today? What if I could stand here today and say, without fear of contradiction, that you would die this coming Thursday (The date of this scripture in our Daily Bible) at 9:45pm (I added a time to the date because that takes away any “vagueness” and gives it more of a sense of urgency). What would be your priorities in this last week of your life?? What would be the THINGS THAT REALLY MATTERED??

Each of us would probably make a list of things, depending on our property and priorities. What I want to do today is look at a man of God who was faced with a similar situation and see what he thought really mattered as death approached. And I want you to consider while we’re doing this what the priories are in YOUR life; should they be changed or would you want to face God just as your are today?

These are the THINGS THAT PAUL SAID MATTERED WHEN YOU COME TO DEATH’S DOOR:

I. A COMPLETED TASK MATTERS. Paul said he had “stayed on the course” of God’s Plan for his life.

He described this is three different ways:

1> “I have fought a good fight”- A Courageous Life

2> “I have finished the race” – A Completed Task

3> “I have kept the faith” – A Confident Trust

Paul had persevered until he “rescued the Princess”. He hadn’t allowed the pitfalls of life or the attacks of Satan to defeat him. Now he could look forward to the “Crown of righteousness” that Christ would soon give him.

It will matter when you come to death how you have faced life! In order to have confidence you must know:

(1) What God wants YOU to do- You won’t do your job if you don’t know what it is.

(2) When God says the job is completed- God buries His workmen but His work goes on. It’s God’s work, and God will say the job is completed. Don’t begin to think it’s YOUR work and you are indispensable.

Are you accomplishing God’s Plan for your life?? (Some people ask how they can know the Will of God). The Will of God is

  1. LEARNED BY DEDICATIONAnd be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Rom 12:2)
  2. PROVED IN HOLY LIVINGFor this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: (1 Th 4:3)
  3. PROCLAIMED BY A THANKFUL HEARTIn every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Th 5:18)
  4. SOMETIMES INVOLVES SUFFERINGWherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. (1 Pet 4:19)

The Thing to remember is that God’s Will for your life normally involves a PLAN rather than PRODUCTION. Most of the Major Prophets in the Bible were failures according to societies standards but they accomplished God’s plan for their life! That’s what matters

II. COMPANIONS MATTER Paul listed 3 kinds of Companions:

A) Those Who Broke his heart- Demas, a friend who let the world lead him astray. Alexander, who simply opposed him ( A man is sometimes best judged by his enemies- Beware when all men speak well of you)

B) Those who Blessed his life- Luke, who was a friend and co-worker. How rich is the man who can work with people he calls friends.

C) Those Brought back into fellowship- He and Mark had been reconciled and now both were doing a work for God.

When it comes to death it matters who your friends are. Don’t die with silly situations used as barriers between you and others.

III. COMFORT MATTERS

A) For the Body- Bring me my Cloak. The prison was cold and damp and Paul was getting up in years. He recognized that the “little things” like a warm coat really mattered. That’s a lesson we need to re-learn today. It’s amazing how many yard sales we have as we get older and recognize what REALLY brings us comfort. It’s astonishing how many closets are so full we can’t put clothes in them and the things that are in them haven’t been moved in years.

B) For the Mind- Bring my books and especially my parchments (Bible). Paul had built his life on the Word of God and now he wanted it sustaining strength as he came to death’s door. The foundations of your mind, and the actions of your life, will be built, to a large degree, on what you read and meditate on (“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he”). If you fill your life with trash, the stench will eventually come out.

As long as we’re human we have needs. It matters where we get those needs met.

IV. CHRIST MATTERS

A) The Companionship of Christ matters in Life-

1. When Paul faced a difficult situation in Corinth, the companionship of Christ sustained him- Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city. And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them (Acts 18:9-11).

2. When Paul was put in Jail the companionship of Christ strengthened him- And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome (Acts 23:11).

3. When Paul faced a life threatening storm, the companionship of Christ supported him- And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, (Acts 27:22-23).

B) The Companionship of Christ matters in Death- When you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, family and friends will have to let you go. Only Christ can walk with you then; and he will walk with you then, only if you walk with Him now!

That’s what matters, your relationship with Christ. Are YOU ready to die today?

IITim 04:7 THE FINISHER

One of the great problems facing the world today is the number of “Quitters” we have. It used to be “better dead than Red” but now no-one wants to serve if it involves sacrifice or extended involvement. Marriage used to be “til death do us part”; now it is until the going gets rough. We must realize that “sticking with it” is not just a good idea but a requirement from the Lord if we are ever to accomplish anything. [Saul was condemned because he did not “finish” the job God gave him (Destroying the Amlakites). Ahab was condemned because he did not “finish” the job of slaying the king].

What makes a person a Finisher?

1. He is Dedicated to his task:

A) He Counted the Cost Luke 14:25‑30

B) He Considered His accountability- Judgment seat of Christ, Use of Talents.

2. He has determination – He will finish even if it means Sacrifice: Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

3. He has a Desire to Finish- A heart for the Work. John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

What are some things that need “Finishing Touches” in our lives?

1. Our Salvation- Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Col 1:21‑23 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

2. Our Service- Deut 28:20 And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the Lord God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord. Some people are afraid to start the Christian life for fear they can’t “hold out”. Underneath are the everlasting arms!! God will give you the strength to keep on keeping on.

3. Our Realization of the Consequences of Sin- James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. But thanks be to God that Christ has “finished” the Penalty of Sin- John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

When you face God will you say, “I have finished my course”?? or “I have failed”!!!

IITim 04:7-11 PAUL THE FAITHFUL

FAITHFUL TO:

1. The Fight- I have fought a good fight. God calls us to a Warfare, not a county fair! Souls are dying, Men are crying, won’t you lead them to the cross.

A) His Enemy- Satan, not other Saints

B) His Armor- Ep 6 Spirit, not flesh

2. The Faith- I have kept the Faith. I know whom I have believed and am presuaded that he is able

3. The Finish- I have finished my course

4. His Future- Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

In Spite of the fact that he had His Failures- 2TI 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

IITim 04:10-18 THE COMPANIONS OF THE CHRISTIAN MINISTRY

Paul now gives one of the most extensive listings in any of his writings of the people who labored with him. Everyone remembers Paul; but God wants us to realize there are MANY members in the “Body of Christ”; and each of them is important.

A) The Circumcised 4:10-11 (Jews first, then Gentiles).

1> Aristarchus- A fellow prisoner; not as famous but still a fellow prisoner.

2> Marcus (Mark)- Barnabas’ Nephew (Importance of Family)

RESTORED to fellowship and work (See Acts 15:36)

3> Jesus (Justus)- Simply named. Some people are more important because of who they are than what they do.

B) The Prayer Warrior- Epaphras 4:12-13

One of you- Part of the Group (Human Viewpoint)

Servant of Christ- Part of the Body (Heaven’s Viewpoint)

Laborer in Prayer- Type of Prayer= Fervent (Zealous)

Purpose of Prayer= That ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

Concerned Christian- Great zeal for all of God’s work (You, Laodicea, and Hierapolis).

C) The Physician- Luke 4:14 Minister to Paul’s Physical needs

D) The Failure- Demas 4:14 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; (2 Tim 4:10). [Even Jesus had problems with His Disciples- John 6:66]. Don’t let desertions destroy you.

E) The Partners- 4:15 The Brethren in Laodicea; a sister church. Send them your letter, read theirs. Share information

F) The Committed- Nymphas 4:15 He put what he had to use for the Lord- Church met in his house. You don’t need wealth; you need willingness.

G) The Per-Cautioned- Archippas 4:17

1> Consider the Importance of your Job- Take heed to the Ministry you have received in the Lord. Was he allowing the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things to enter in and choke the word, so it became unfruitful. (Mark 4:19).

Was he distracted by “things” instead of his work? (You become more interested in the “color of the ship” than in the fact that it’s sinking!!).

Were persecutions, problems, or poverty tempting him to look back??

2> Complete you task- Finish what God told you to do.

CONCLUSION:

Paul’s Signature- Stamp of Authenticity (God does not want us fooled with counterfeit writings).

Paul’s Sigh- Remember my bonds (Even a man like Paul faced some very long and difficult days).

Paul’s Salutation- “Grace be with you”. (May God’s unmerited and unearned favor go with and guard you).
