Acts 00 Outline of Acts from NT Survey
Written by Luke – A continuation of his Gospel (Notice the “we” sections, 16:10 17; 20:5 – 21:18; 27:1 – 28:16). The first 12 chapters are basically about Peter opening the doors of the Gospel to the Jews, Samaritans and Gentiles using the Keys of the Kingdom given him by Christ.
Chapter 13 28 is basically about Paul and his journeys to the Gentiles. (See Acts 13:46, the pivotal verse where Paul declares he will go to the Gentile.)

SEVERAL KEY THINGS TO NOTICE IN ACTS:
1. Christ continues His work thru the Church Acts 1:1
2. The Holy Spirit comes to empower and guide the Church
3. Resurrection is the climax of every sermon
4. The Gospel goes from Jews to Gentiles (Jews cut off, Gentile grafted in)
SOME GOOD EXAMPLES IN ACTS:
1. How to handle problems 6:1 6
2. How to lead someone to Christ 8:26 40
3. How to select leaders 13:1 4
4. How to resolve conflicts over doctrine 15:1 35
One reason Acts was written was to show to the Roman World that Christianity had never been attacked by the Roman Government. It was either accepted or ignored. The Jews were the attackers. This was important to Paul’s defense at his first trial. The Conversion of Paul is listed 3 times. Why???
Acts 01:12DETERMINING THE MIND OF THE LORD
And they put him in ward, that the mind of the LORD might be showed them (Lev 24:12)
Sometimes the most difficult thing a person has to do about the mind of the Lord is to determine what it is! Many people have a “Want To” but don’t know “What to”. Like the Israelites in today’s scripture, we need to find out the MIND OF THE LORD.
One place in the Bible that people were faced with the same dilemma is the last half of Acts 1. Jesus has ascended back to the Father. Before He left he gave His disciples their “marching orders”; but then He told them to wait until the power to carry out their mission came upon them. During the wait they began to wonder about an important detail; Should someone take Judas’ place among the twelve, and, if so, who should it be.
The process they used shows us some ways we today can come to know the “Mind of the Lord”.
I. A NEED WAS FELT- Judas’ office was vacant
II. SCRIPTURE WAS EXAMINED- About the actions of Judas and about any thing required on their part.
III. CONDITIONS WERE SET- Guidelines were given about requirements
IV. PRAYER WAS GIVEN- Specific Prayer about a Specific Problem
V. A DECISION WAS MADE- “Lots” were cast (Fleece). Spirit bears witness with our spirit.
Apply this to Marriage, getting or changing a job, purchasing a new house.
Acts 02:1 WHAT MAKES A GOOD CHURCH?
There are a number of things a person could list here (Get people to list) but I believe there are 7 things that “Stand Out” in a good Church. Let’s make them part of OUR CHURCH.
1. Worshipping: Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (1:14 says they were Praying. Then Peter and the rest were Preaching and Praising).
(Who do we Worship, How do we Worship?)
2. Praying: Acts 1:14 says they were with one accord in Prayer (Seeking Direction). Acts 3 says Peter and John were going to Pray (Prayed for Sick). Acts 4:24 says they lifted their voices to God with one accord (Prayed in Distress. (A Preacher who isn’t Praying is Playing and a Church that isn’t Praying is Straying.)
3. Soul Winning: A Good Church should be a Growing Church. And a Church grows thru Births. (Acts 2:47 And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.)
4. Fellowship: A Good Church has people in it that “get along” with each other. They enjoy doing things for the Lord together. (Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.)
Sharing Acts 4:32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
5. Miracles: If you can explain everything that happens in your church then something is wrong! Acts 3 the lame man healed; Acts 5 Ananias and Sapphira died for robbing God.
6. Giving: Acts 4:34-35 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles feet; and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need
7. Learning: Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. The Bible is our final Authority. We need to learn it and make it a part of our lives as we face Satan and the false doctrines he will send our way. The Bible exposes Sin and enables us to grow (instead of staying carnal babies!!)
What areas are we weak in??? What can we do to strengthen Them???
Acts 2:26-31 WHAT JESUS LEFT WHEN HE LEFT
Easter teaches us that Government may try to kill God but He just will not stay in the grave!
[A 3000 souls saved sermon using my life verse {Ps 16:11} as its text] Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance (Acts 2:26-28).
God was not willing to leave Jesus’s body in the grave or a soul in Hell. But when Jesus left earth to go to Heaven here are seven things Jesus Left when He Left. Jesus left:
His personal Possessions: Jesus died on a borrowed cross (Barabbas), borrowed someone to care for His mother (John 19:26-27), and was buried in a borrowed tomb (Joseph of Arimathaea). He had nowhere to lay His head (Matt 8:20) and He died without even a shirt on His back! (His Robe was gambled for at the cross). Even His burial clothes were left in the tomb!
The Devil does not want you poor and pitiful; he wants you rich and increased with goods, having need of nothing (Rev 3:17) so you will be preoccupied with possessions, profits, and pleasure instead of spending time with God. Satan wants you to believe that the discomfort in your soul is worth the shiny object in your life. I just wonder what you will we say when you hear, “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?”
A perpetual Prayer Priest– Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:14-16).
A powerful Partner– These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (Jn 14:25-26).
A Part in His Body with Goal to Accomplish and Commands to Obey– For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, (1 Corinthians 12:12-13).
A Promise of a prepared Place– Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:1-3).
A perfect Pardon– For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. (Hebrews 10:14). It is finished!
That gives us a Living Hope– Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:3 5)
ADDITIONAL NOTES: JESUS LEFT:
• Earthly possessions which were temporary for a home that is eternal.
• A Salvation that was completed and a Mission that was commanded.
• The Spirit to live within us and a promise that He will come for us.
• A tomb that was empty so Heaven could be filled.
Seven things Jesus left when he left
1. Possessions did not possess the Prince of Peace because He knew what had real value- though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). Magpies (related to the crow family) often use shiny objects to line their nests. These shiny objects make the nest less comfortable but some scientists believe the Magpies collect them because they are able to recognize themselves in these “mirrors”. I wonder how many people live in “Magpie mansions” filled with disorder and debt simply because they think the accumulation of things will bring “mirrors of meaning” to their life
2. An Empty Tomb: A tomb that was empty so Heaven could be filled. An Empty Tomb means Death is Conquered and Sins are paid for- Glory! (Luke 12:20). – O Death where is thy sting? O Grave where is thy victory?
3. Promise of a coming Spirit to make you a new creature in Christ: Disciples were fearful and “doubting Thomas” until the Promised Spirit filled them for service. (Example of God leading about Maine house for Mandy during Shannon Wedding).
4. Full payment for my sins – Eternal Assurance. ALL SINS PAID FOR (Rebellion reason for rejection)
5. A Promise and a Place- A Promise He would return- In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye and a declaration that He would put His carpenter skills to good use by building me a mansion in Heaven.
6. Goal to Accomplish- Commands to Obey- Go to all the world [I have shared God’s good news with at least 500 a week for last 40 years]. Get a Vision: First pair of glasses- Saw leaves on trees and Stars in the heaven. If you are walking around in the dark or if life is all fuzzy then you need to come to the Light and let Him change your life.
7. A Living Hope- Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:3 5)
An Actress names Sarah Died on a TV show- No impact because it was TV
A Sports star named Dale Earnhardt Died- No impact because I did not know
Jesus Christ Died and Rose- My Savior and Lord
In life’s struggle, winning a battle but losing your soul is not a good victory. Christ offers Salvation for your soul, Help for living, and a Heavenly Home. Are you willing to turn from Sin and accept this Savior?
I. A LIVELY HOPE- vs 3
A) A Living Hope See 1:21 God Raised Him from the dead and gave Him Glory
B) A Life Changing Hope
Many do not want to die because:
A) Life is familiar
B) Family is Loved
C) Judgment is Feared
II. A PERSONAL INHERITANCE (Heaven) – vs 4 Reserved in Heaven for you
A) Incorruptible- Can not be made bad
B) Undefiled- Pure and Holy because God lives there.
C) Everlasting Fadeth not away
D) Reserved- Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:1 3)
My Place brings Peace.
My Place is Prepared
My Place is Personal
III. A POWERFUL SALVATION- vs 5 (Help)
A) The Wages of Sin is death
B) The Resurrection declares that sins are paid in full- Glory!
I want to make sure I do not leave
Any debt unpaid
Any opportunity untaken (Shared God’s Good News with a minimum of 500 people almost every week for over 40 years).
Any expression of Love not given
Any Friendship not supported
Acts 2:41-47 A NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved (Acts 2:41-47).
How to be a Growing and Glowing Church today (Acts 2:41-47)
1. Remember it is a Volunteer Organization: Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Church is not a JOB that people must report to; it is a Place of willing Worship of a Great God who does Great Things in People’s lives.
2. It should stand firm in the basic doctrines of God: And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers
3. It should be respected because people see God sometimes do a “God Thing”: And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles
4. It should feel like a “family fellowship”: And all that believed were together, and had all things common
5. It should have times when everyone rejoices together: breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God,
6. It should operate in such a way until people think it is a worthwhile organization: having favors with all the people
7. It should be a place of Divine Growth: And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved
A New Testament Church should never be an “Ichabod” Church (The Glory is departed) or simply an Organization. It should be a living growing Body of Believers.
Acts 02:47 THE COMPLETE CHURCH MEMBER
1) Joins the Church:
a) Enters the Lord’s Way- And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved (Acts 2:47). The Only Door into the Church is Jesus Christ. Church members aren’t made they’re “born”.
The 4 Requirements for joining our Church are:
1. Willing to acknowledge the fact that you have repented of your sins and by Faith have accepted Christ as your Savior.
2. Baptized by immersion (or pending)
3. Willing to follow the faith and practices of our Church
4. Faithfully attend for 3 months
b) Realizes it the Lord’s Work- I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Mat 16:18). It’s Not a Club; it a Church. A Christian will want to identify himself with God and His work. It’s part of making a stand for God against the Devil.
2) Attends the Church.
a) Has a Desire to Attend- I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD (Psa 122:1).
b) Has a Duty to Attend- Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching (Heb 10:25). The FWB Treatise says a person who does not attend or support the Church for a year is subject to dismissal. Common Sense says a person who joins the church should attend it. If it’s dull and dry and unappealing to you then let’s make any Biblical changes necessary (One thing you won’t find any problem with here at Grace is willingness to try something new!).
3) Gets Something from the Service:-The Right Attitude is needed. You can’t come in and expect God to “Cram a Blessing down your throat”. You want to receive a Blessing but you must be “blessable”.
a) By Participation- One of the main things I have noticed thru the years is that the people who GET the most from Church services are the people who GIVE to the Services.
1. Give Your Talents- Part of the Body of Christ. Do your part.
2. Give Your Tithes- And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD (Lev 27:30). Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it (Mal 3:8-10).
3. Give Your Time- MAKE Time for Church and Church Activities.
b) By Observation- Knows what to look for in the Sermon
Inspiration- a Message FROM God FOR the People
Illustration- A pathway into the Mind of Men
Application- God’s Word and Man’s Works Meet
The Complete Church Members learns how to live in the real world of real problems depending on God’s Strength and direction. He can face Life and doesn’t fear death. The first step is Salvation. The next Step is Becoming an active part of the body of Christ, the Church. Then comes growth and development into the person God wants you to be. Isn’t that what YOU want??
Acts 03:1-10 SUCH AS I HAVE
Here is the well known story of the Lame Man who was 40 years old and yet had to be carried to the door of the Church each day to accept charity from the people who were going to and from worship.
I wonder how many people had said, “Something ought to be done about all these bums that block the way to the Temple! We’ve got a beautiful temple here but it spoils the effect to see all these poor people around”. Of Course, there were probably some that had said, “It looks like SOMEONE could do SOMETHING for these needy people. I’d be glad to help if I had lots of money but what can my little bit do?” I want us to see today that God is not as concerned with What we have as He is in What we do with What we have.
I. THE LITTLE THINGS GOD USES:
A) Moses’ rod (Ex 4:1-5)- God uses a simple “stick” that Moses was carrying as a Sign; to Smite the Rock in order to obtain water; and to Ensure Victory when Joshua was fighting Amalek (Ex 17:). What do YOU have in your hand that God can use?? A Pencil to write stories and poems; a paint brush to do art work or keep something from decay?
B) David’s Sling (I Sam 17:40-50)- David was offered armor and swords but he had not proved them so he used a simple sling to defeat a giant. Pornography has been removed from many places simply because ONE person complained.
C) Little Boy’s Two Fishes and Five Loaves (John 6:9)- were used to feed 5000 men; besides women and children. I wonder how many people go hungry because we would give a bag of groceries if we had it but aren’t willing to give the can of soup we do have.
II. THE WAY GOD LOOKS AT “LITTLE” THINGS:
A) The Widow’s Mite (Mk 12:41-44) this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. God is more interested in what you have LEFT than in what you Give!
Ps 37:16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. Prov 15:16 Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith.
B) Mustard Seed Faith- Matt 17:20 Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. It is not the Amount of Faith you have but the Application of that Faith.
C) A Cup of Cold Water- Matt 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. We look for a great work to do but God rewards the little ability we have.
Most people don’t stumble over mountains but they do stumble on rocks!! It’s the “little Foxes that spoil the vines” (Song 2:15) and A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump I Cor 5:6. Solomon put it this way- Ecc 10:1 Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honor. Don’t allow the “Little” things to cause you to stumble; but don’t allow the “little” you have to keep you from doing the Work God intends.
Acts 4:10-12 MOST IMPORTANT NAME
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:10-12).
In the Mountains of Nepal, barely 40 miles from the border with China, our Evangelist / Church-Planters recently won a 60 year old woman to faith in Christ in an area where the people live as people lived 200 years ago and where many had never heard the name of Christ before. People live eternally because people give sacrificially. [$75 a month will support an Evangelist/Church Planter]
According to (1 Corinthians 8:5-6) there are many that “are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him”
Many have written about Jesus to promote their own group or for Personal Profit as they abused and misused the wonderful story of Christ:
The Opinion of Charles Russell (Jehovah’s Witnesses)[Deny His Resurrection]: “The man Jesus is dead, forever dead”
The Opinion of Brigham Young (Mormon Church) [Defile His Sinless Character]: “Jesus Christ was a polygamist; Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, and Mary Magdalene were his plural wives. Also the bridal feast of Cana of Galilee, where Jesus turned the water into wine, was the occasion of one of his own marriages.”
The Opinion of Mary Baker Eddy (Christian Science) [Deny God became a man]: “God is indivisible. A portion of God could not enter man; neither could God’s fullness be reflected by a single man.”
That is one reason we need to set the record straight and look at what happened when God “was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
I wish we had time to look at His Followers and His Foes (Liberal Sadducees and Fanatical Pharisees) as well as His Family and His Friends {Great idea for a Church- Take the 4 quarters of a year and study a gospel each quarter}. We could marvel at His miracles, scratch our heads over His Parables, and feel what it is like to be so enthralled with His teachings until His disciples finally had to tell Him to stop teaching long enough to feed the congregation or they would faint from hunger!
Remember that God cannot be “put in a box” because (Psalms 147:5) “Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite”. I do want us, however, to get a glimpse of His Glory and marvel at His majesty until we KNOW CHRIST so well that our lives SHOW Him to a world that desperately needs to know Him.
The Old Testament began with man being made in the image of God. The Gospels begin with God made in the image of man. The four Gospels were written to give us a four-fold picture of Christ- Matthew as King (Wise Men, Kingdom Sermons), Mark as Servant (No Birth records, “Straight way”- Action: 42 times in Mark, 7 in Matthew, 1 in Luke and John), Luke as man (Cousin Birth, Shepherds, Emphasis on Prayer), and John as God (In Beginning was Word, Purpose of Book- But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name (John 20:31).
The Gospels show Jesus walking on water in a stormy sea and calming it with a word. We hear God speaking from heaven above and Jesus telling about souls praying from hell beneath. Jesus forgives Harlots, feed multitudes, condemns hypocrites; and shows us what God would do as a Man.
The Gospels describe Jesus saving sinners under a tree (Nathanael), up a tree (Zacchaeus), and on a tree (Thief on cross); as well as cursing a fruitless fig tree. They reveal that Jesus performed 36 Miracles, told 38 Parables, Prayed 19 Prayers, preached 16 sermons, made 45 Predictions, and fulfilled 37 Old Testament Prophecies. He quotes the Old Testament 22 times, converts 27 souls, gave 10 proofs of his deity, experienced 15 kinds of suffering, and appeared 10 times following His resurrection (Much of this was gleaned from “Willmington’s Guide to the Bible”).
Prior to this sheep had died for shepherds, but now the Shepherd will die for the sheep. Yet even while we study the life of Christ it is vital that we remember it is the DEATH of Christ on the Cross and His Resurrection that provide our Salvation–That is why at least 1/4 of each Gospel is devoted to this aspect of Jesus’ life. It is not living the morally pure life of Christ that saves us. It is not simply the practicing of the principles that Jesus taught that will make us fit for Heaven. Without the Cross and the empty tomb we simply have good teachings. By faith in the Shed blood of Christ we have eternal life. That is what is important today!
Steinbeck said, “We should live so that our death brings no joy to the world”. I say we should believe in Christ and live for God so that our death brings us Joy in the next world!
Heard a song, “Once upon a time I was falling in love, now I am simply falling apart; total eclipse of the heart”. That is my life without Christ- Falling apart and wandering in the darkness.
All four Gospels record the descent of the Spirit upon that guileless Man at the Jordan baptism, but only Luke goes on to say: “And Jesus, being full of the Holy Spirit, returned from Jordan” (iv. 1). All three synoptists tell how the Spirit took Him into the wilderness to be tempted of Satan, but only Luke adds: “And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit” (iv. 14). Peculiar to Luke, also, is a startling word in chapter x. 21: “In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit.” The Greek word means to leap or exult; and manuscript evidence is that the word “spirit” should be “the Holy Spirit”, thus: “In that hour Jesus exulted in the Holy Spirit.” All such references betoken the exquisite affiliation of the Holy Spirit with that sinless manhood. But more, that Spirit-begotten manhood needed the enduing of the Holy Spirit for spiritual victory and service. Our Lord became incarnate to be One of us— to be like us, with us, for us, as the new Adam, the new representative Man, the new Champion of the race, the human Challenger of usurper Apollyon. It would have been no moral victory for the incarnate Son of God to overwhelm Satan by some sudden release of Divine power. Our Lord was tempted as Man. He overcame as Man. In all such connection His Divine power was in abeyance. He overcame in His dependent, prayerful, Spirit-endued manhood! This human victory of His is as precious to us individually as it was crucial to the race as a whole, for it means that He who thus became our victorious Champion became also our Example. It means that our own human nature may now be endued by that same Holy Spirit for similar victory and service.
Acts 4:12 FIVE TRUTHS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SALVATION
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
Revival in a Christian Church is about beginning or renewing a relationship with Jesus Christ. It builds upon the absolute truth that the ONLY way to a right relationship with God in this life and Heaven as your home in the next life is based upon your faith in, and your relationship with, Jesus Christ. Jesus is not one of many ways to Heaven, He is the only way.
We live in an era of “tolerance” in which all values and principles are being questioned. In fact, Advertisements today are using the principle of trustworthiness as being something unusual- “We do what we say, what an unusual concept”. Our company is built on “truth in billing”. Social and moral values are all being questioned and new standards are being established almost every day. Sin is no longer in! Now every man does that which is right in his own sight.
When I preach on John 3:16 in India I have to remember that when I say “God so loved the world” that I am talking to a people who have 2038 different gods! They need to know the ONE true God.
In light of this let me share with you “5 Truths you need to know about Salvation”.
1) Why Salvation is Necessary- For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23).
2) Where does Salvation come from- For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; (Titus 2:11 12 )
3) What do you have to do to Obtain Salvation.- And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God (1 John 5:11 13).
4) How You can lose Salvation-Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul (Hebrews 10:38 39).
5) When You Must Receive Salvation- (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation) (2 Corinthians 6:2).
What do you stand to lose by remaining lost in sins?
1) Physical Problems- Neighbor=s lost arm while drunk
2) Long term limitation- Ohio man in prison for white collar stealing. Divorce limits ability to serve God.
3) Absence of Abundant Life- Drugs, Drinks, Debauchery do NOT bring lasting Joy or Peace.
4) Eternity in Hell- How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; (Hebrews 2:3)
Example- I was chasing a “wild goose” and ran into quicksand. The more I struggled the deeper I got. Finally, my dad arrived, climbed out on a limb, put down his hand, and asked me to grab his hand so he could pull me to safety. God is asking the same thing of you today. Will you sink or will you reach for His hand?
Acts 4:13 DYNAMIC DISCIPLESHIP
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus (Acts 4:13).
The Ship is Sinking. Our job is not to repair the ship or sing songs while it sinks. If God shows us a way to repair the ship then we will but our job is to rescue as many as we can before the ship goes down. We do that by having a Heart for Jesus (Went for an X-ray. Saw the tech was from Wisconsin. Asked how she got to SC. Simple answer, “McLeod offered her a job”. Right answer, “God brought her to SC to hear the Gospel and come into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ”. I took knowledge of her that she had been with Jesus!
If we are going to have 200 in attendance this year then we must not simple HAVE Church; we must learn to BE the Church. What difference will you make in your world this week?
You do not need a lot- 2 fish and 5 loaves, wash the feet of Jesus with your tears and wipe them with your hair, be willing to “go out on a limb” like Zacchaeus. [A kneeling bench / Altar, A Sound Video Room]
A “Spread the Gospel all over the World” Example: And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her (Mark 14:3-9).
What is your: [Never under estimate what God can do with your dedication] (FB Picture 5-14-21]
Passion (Desire)- To Give Jesus the best she had: Alabaster box of spikenard very precious
Purpose (Goal)- Show her love for Jesus and acknowledge her faith in God’s Plan for Him
Plan (Action)- She made Jesus the center of attention and accepted criticism from others
Power (Supernatural Strength from God)- A Memorial for the World.
What does God need to do in you today that would make a Difference for the Kingdom of God this week?
When people “take knowledge of you” who will they think you have been with?
Acts 04:33-37 BARNABAS: DARE TO CARE
Barnabas was a man whose character and conduct made a world changing difference. If we are to follow his example then we need to recognize some of the things that changed in his life when he became a child of God.
I. HE RECEIVED A NEW NAME TO SHOW HIS NEW CHARACTER: And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet (Acts 4:33-37).
II. HE DESIRED TO INCLUDE OTHERS IN THE WORK OF GOD: But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem (Acts 9:27-28).
III. HE BUILT A REPUTATION FOR FAITHFUL AND TRUSTWORTHY SERVICE: Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul (Acts 11:29-30).
IV. HE WAS ABLE TO ADAPT TO CHANGES IN GOD’S PROGRAM SO HE COULD REACH MORE PEOPLE: Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost (Acts 13:46-52).
V. HE STOOD WITH FELLOW BELIEVERS IN THE BAD TIMES AS WELL AS IN GOOD TIMES: And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God (Acts 14:19-22).
VI. HE WAS WILLING TO PUT IT ALL ON THE LINE IN ORDER TO HELP SOMEONE OVERCOME FAILURE AND BECOME THE GREAT PERSON GOD INTENDED THEM TO BE: And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do. And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God (Acts 15:36-40).
He is never mentioned in Acts again but eventually Paul would say about the young man Barnabas stood for (John Mark) Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry (2 Timothy 4:11).
Acts 05:17 32 THINGS TO GO TO JAIL FOR
There are some things we ought NOT to go to jail for- I Pet 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a murder, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters. But there are some things a Christian should believe enough and stand for enough until they are willing to go to jail.
1. Rather than do wrong– Joseph went to jail rather than commit Adultery. Joseph’s battle cry was: There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God. (Gen 39:9
2. Rather than stop preaching God’s Word– Jeremiah was offered the choice of either stopping Preaching or Jail several times; his answer, God’s word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
3. Rather than stop Praying– Daniel 6:10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went inot his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God as he did aforetime.
4. Rather than bow before the gods of this world– The 3 Hebrew Children. Dan 3:16 18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
5. Rather than stop condemning Sin– John the Baptist. Luke 3:91 20 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in Prison.
6. Rather than stop witnessing– the Apostles. Acts 5:17 20 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, and laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison, But the Angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. 28 32 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
7. Rather than let a demon possessed person hinder the work of God: In Acts 15: Paul was put in prison for releasing a man from “Satan’s prison” and ending up converting the jailor and beginning the Philippian Church!
When your Christianity is put to the test, will you Stand, and having done all, Stand- even if it means you end up in prison?
Acts 06:1 7 EFFECTIVE CHRISTIAN WORK
Every Christian ought to continually ask themselves this question, “How can my life be effective for God and not be wasted?”. I don’t know that there is a definite “Set of rules” because God has purposes and plans for everyone, but I do believe there are some guidelines that can help us determine what we are to do.
Let’s look first at the BACKGROUND of the situation we are studying to get an idea of what was needed and why.
The number of the disciples was MULTIPLIED 120 (1:15), 3000 (2:41), 5000 (4:4), Multitudes (5:14). If one man won one soul each year and each man he won won one, and each one that was won won one; in 32 years they would have won 4,294,967,296 !!!!!! [In case you’re wondering why I stopped at 32 years THERE WOULD BE NO ONE LEFT TO WIN]. If everyone in the Church could get the vision of reaching one person for Christ each year we could change our Church, our city, our county, and our country for Christ.
But with this vast influx of people also came PROBLEMS Prov 14:4 Where no oxen are the crib is clean, but much increase in by the strength of the ox. In this particular case it was the fact that several of the widows felt they were being neglected (The “New members”, the Greeks, felt the old members were getting the best of things).
THE SOLUTION was the involving of men in the work so that EVERYONE DID WHAT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DO. “It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.” “We will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.”
That brings us to the QUALIFICATION FOR BEING USED: (I know these apply specifically to Deacons but I believe they also apply in a general sense to every Christian worker.)
1. HONEST REPORT Tested Character, Consistent Christian living
2. FULL OF THE HOLY GHOST Yielded to God’s Use. Using God’s Power.
3. FULL OF WISDOM This is not Education II Tim 3:7 Ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the Truth. I Cor 1:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. (The Reason I Cor 2:4 5 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God).
It comes from Relationship with Christ Act 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and preceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. I Cor 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom,… James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
When these took their place- The word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith (Acts 6:7).
Acts 06:1 CONFRONTATION
*******See about adding these { Prov 17:10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool. Prov 15:5 A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent. Prov 10:17 He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth. Prov 27:5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.}
(Webster) Confrontation: Face to face Opposition. Most of us dread Confrontation and seek to avoid it. [Prov 15:12 A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise ]. Let’s see some of the “Values” and the “Vices” of Confrontation.
Acts 6:1 Confrontation over Feelings of neglect / Acts 15:2 Confrontation over Varying Viewpoints about Salvation.
Confrontation is not wrong (here we find it in the Church and among the “Religious” leaders) in certain situations. Confrontation causes us to DEFINE our beliefs (I Cor 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you )or DISTINGUISH our Behavior [Remember that it is the File, and not the Feather, that sharpens the axe]. What I want us to see is that Confrontation should never originate from Personality Problems, Pride, or the “Pleasure” of seeing others brought down.
Where does this type CONFRONTATION originate?
1. The Effort being made to Change another person into what YOU WANT THEM TO BE; Your Image instead of God’s image. Sin is falling short of the Glory of God. Since God has a different way for different people to Glorify Him (Gifts) then we can not judge by our standards. (Realize that the person or people you are trying to CHANGE think you are saying to them “You were wrong in doing it this way but I’m smarter than you”; even though most times you are really saying, “Let me help you become what I think is better”. That’s why people resist Change so much)
2. The Effort being made to Control another person so you can get them to do what YOU WANT THEM TO DO. Everyone likes to “Play God”. It’s sometimes easy to talk about being a “Servant” in an abstract way but it’s more difficult when people don’t follow your “Script”. We want people to say, “I see your great SACRIFICE, and think you’re the greatest person in the world”. Instead they often say, “Can’t you do more or better!”
We’re actually only using “Service” to allow us to “Master” the other person and we become angry when it doesn’t work out our way. [Husbands and wives use “Affection”, or the lack thereof, to control each other. Children become “good” by doing certain things such as cleaning their room when they want to get their parents to give in to them. And when the boss starts smiling most workers get worried!].
3. The Desire to Criticize others in order to “BRING THEM DOWN TO YOUR OWN LEVEL“. Unwilling to improve yourself you become jealous of those who attempt to do something for God.
It would do well for all people to remember the 7 things God hates: PRO 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: PRO 6:17-19 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
The 7 things God hates:
1. A Proud Look over estimation of Self, under estimation of others
2. A lying tongue
3. Hands that shed innocent blood If we fail to warn the sinful then their blood is upon our hands.
4. Heart that deviseth wicked imaginations You see what you want to see instead of what is so.
5. Feet that be swift in running to mischief desire to do wrong
6. A False witness that speaketh lies A witness is supposed to be someone who actually saw the incident. Instead they tell what they want instead of what is true
7. He that soweth discord among brethern “Letteth loose strife”
A practical illustration is to allow someone to hold the end of a ball of string and tell the main points about a story. He then tosses the Ball to someone else who tells what he remembers about the story. Holding the string he then tosses the ball to another who does the same thing. Soon there is a tangle of string between the people that must be cut instead of unraveled.
So it is with Gossip. It soon gets so tangled until unraveling becomes impossible and only the blood of Christ can change the situation.
How can we avoid Confrontation?
1. Put yourself in the other person’s “Shoes” Job 16:4 6 I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief. Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased?
2. Are you defending a Preference or a Principle? See I Cor 9:19 22 where Paul said he had become all things to all men to save some, and compare it to Gal 1:9 where Paul calls a curse on those who preach another Gospel.
3. Try to find where YOU are in relation to the Problem:
A) Are you IN the Problem (“Blinded” by the Pressure),
B) OUTSIDE the Problem (Where you’re either criticizing or comforting or callously ignoring it),
C) or simply “The” Problem!
Study the examples of Jesus about Confrontation: He didn’t confront the Samaritan woman about where to worship; He exposed her problem with husbands and pointed her to living water. That’s the way we need to learn to handle situations: 1) See the “Root” of the Problem instead of the Fruit. 2) Try to help the situation instead of make it worst.
Are you trying to Change people into what YOU want, trying to Control them so they will fit your plans, or are you simply criticizing others because you’re too lazy or loveless to get involved. Don’t be a “Confronter”; be a “Christian”.
Acts 06:5 SPIRIT FILLED CHRISTIANS
I. AVAILABLE FOR WHATEVER GOD WANTS 6:2 3 Even Serve Tables !! It was the Spirit that drove Jesus into the desert to be tempted. It was the Spirit that led Philip to leave the revival in Samaria and go to the Eunuch in the Desert. Most people want to “Use” the Spirit but the Spirit filled Christian is completely available for the Spirit to use. They accept their place in the Body of Christ and work of God.
II. A CHANNEL FOR GOD’S WONDER WORKING POWER 6:8 Sin, in reality, is clogging the “Pipe” so God’s Blessings cannot flow. God will use you to do things that you never thought you could do (and couldn’t without the Spirit).
III. CONTROLLED BY SPIRIT AND NOT FLESH (REPAYS HATE WITH LOVE) 6:9 15 The Fruits of the Spirit are manifested in your life. Your Wisdom will confound them and your Peace will astound them. Some of your greatest Testimony will be the attitude you show to those who persecute and abuse you [Through the years multitudes of people have been won to the Lord by the way Christians have endured trials and persecution].
IV. MIGHTY IN THE SCRIPTURES 7: The Scriptures will be the basis of your life and work because the Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible. John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. It will affect your Memory, Your Message, and your Methods.
V. SUSTAINED IN TRIAL 7:54 56 A knowledge that Jesus is at the Father’s right hand interceding for you. You’ll find Peace in Storms and Strength in Troubles.
VI. LIKE JESUS 7:59 60 Willing to Forgive and ready to die. Your life will lift up Jesus so that men may be drawn to Him. Whether you live or die you will manifest Christ (Phil 1:23 24).
Acts 08:26-40 UNDERSTANDING SCRIPTURE
When Phillip came to the Ethiopian Eunuch he asked him if he could understand what he was reading. The Eunuch replied, “How can I except some man guide me”. Phillip went on from there to explain the scriptures and proclaim Christ.
We are faced with many perplexing problems today- Assisted Suicide, divorcing parents, defining sin versus life styles, etc. People quote scripture all the time to justify their position; how do we know what is right?? We need to be able to understand what the Scriptures say about these issues.
Example- If I say, “My wife will sleep with another man tonight”/ or “Andrew (our Nephew) is coming to spend the night tonight”. One statement is explosive, the other is just an “explosion”!
WHY IT’S HARD TO UNDERSTAND SCRIPTURE:
A) Language- God Confounded Languages- Gen 11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
B) Learning- Society’s education vs Scripture admonition- Prov 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Real Education- Psa 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
HELPS TO UNDERSTAND SCRIPTURE:
A) A Relationship with Christ- Luke 24:45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
B) Prayer- Solomon Prayed for- 1 Ki 3:6-10 And Solomon said, Thou hast showed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
[Sometimes Angels impart- Dan 9:22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding].
C) Preachers Help- Jer 3:15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. Neh 8:8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. 2 Chr 26:5 And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper.
D) Faith Helps- Heb 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Incidentally, this is Why we need a Nursery during Church Services- Neh 8:2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. Isa 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
BENEFITS: OF UNDERSTANDING:
Understands is better than law- Psa 32:9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.
Understanding Enables to live right- Psa 119:34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Understanding Glorifies God- Deu 4:5-6 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
Understanding is the Only thing worthy of Rejoicing- Jer 9:23-24 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
Understanding shows a Correct Walk- Hosea 14:9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein. And knowing when to WALK INSTEAD OF TALK- Prov 17:28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
Understanding is needful for Fruitfulness- Mat 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
Understanding Helps recognize Evil- Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. And can Lead to Evil if not heeded- Eph 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Acts 08:36 WHAT HINDERS YOU??
This has been a terrible week with me about hindrances- 2 death, several in the hospital, many problems, numerous pastors by for help on fall programs, innumerable phone calls, etc. All of these have combined together to limit my visiting and hinder my sermon preparation- right at the time we’re seeking to bear “fruit” for the Lord by winning Lost people.
Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Baptism is a Public sign of your faith in the Death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. It does not save you but it is something that EVERY Christian should do– They should believe in their Heart that Christ died for their sins, confess with their mouth that they have accepted Christ as Savior and will now follow Him, Be baptized by immersion, and join a local Bible Believing Church where they can grow and function as a Christian.
This is what is supposed to happen but it doesn’t happen very often. The people who ought to be saved seem satisfied being lost and doomed for Hell and the people who accept Christ seem satisfied to make a confession without living a commitment {It’s very difficult to get people to join the Church any more much less take an active part in its ministry}. I want us to look today at some things that hinder people from coming to Christ or continuing with Christ and then REMOVE THE HINDRANCE!!
I. FAMILY TIES– Gen 24:56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. The servant of Abraham had come seeking a Bride for Isaac (Just as I have come seeking a Bride for Christ!) and God had prospered and directed his journey (Soul winners need to remember that God will direct them also!). Now as he was attempting to take the Bride back the family kept trying to delay him because they didn’t want to give up their daughter.
Families generally hinder you because they want you for themselves and they fear committal to Christ will “steal your love”- A Christian wife will want to Pray instead of party; your worldly friends will not like your Christian convictions so you’ll have to make new friends….
This same type of hindrance is keeping people from coming to or committing to Christ today- Many wives must come to Church alone or with Husbands who are not fully committed to Christ so they can’t enjoy the full Blessings of God; Children are sent to Church by parents which means they must be disciplined by others and think of Church as a Duty to be endured.
The way to Hurdle this Hindrance is to heed the words of Jesus-Jesus said you had to love Him above Mother, Father, Husband, Wife, Son, or Daughter. He even told a man who’s father was dying to “let the dead bury the dead, come follow me”! His meaning is very clear, Commitment to Christ must come ahead of anything or anyone.
II. RELIGIOUS PROFESSIONALS– Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! For ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. Many people are hindered by the Hypocrisy of “showman Preachers”. They hear them cry for money and live like millionaires; They hear them talk of sacrifice yet never make any. They must realize that there are a lot of “showmen and Charlatans” that are attracted to Christianity but we don’t call them to “Religion”, we call them to Christ
III. SATAN– I Thess 2:18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.
IV. PRESSURES OF DUTY– Rom 15:22 For which cause [maintaining my ministry in Asia Minor] also I have been much hindered from coming to you. A Christian is not OF the world but he must live IN the world and sometimes the “daily duties” keep him from showing concern and compassion as he should. But isn’t it strange how men will wait in a doctor’s office for hours because of some physical problem and yet expect someone to beg and bribe them to come for help with their spiritual problem?
V. PEOPLE’S OPINION– I Cor 9:12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
VI. MISAPPLICATION OF DOCTRINE (They were being taught that they had to be circumcised as well as believe the Gospel to be saved)- Gal 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
VII. MARRIAGE PROBLEMS– I Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
VIII. JEALOUS NEIGHBORS– Neh 4:7-8 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, And conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
What is Hindering YOU from coming to or Continuing with Christ?? It’s time to remove the Hindrance and take up the Cross.
Acts 09:10 19 Acts 22:12 16 THE MAN WHO LED PAUL TO CHRIST
Introduction – Commonplace men are important; Needed a “Common Man” to do uncommon things
I. His Readiness – He was Ready – His Character
A) “A certain disciple” A follower known to God.
B) “A devout man according to the Law” Lived a consistent Life
C) “A good report of all the Jews that dwelt there” Showed Love
II. His Willingness – He was willing to be made willing – His Commitment – To go to the “worst enemy” of Christians
A) Time – Had to be now
B) Place – Called straight
C) Result – Depended on God
III. His Faithfulness – Took Faith to go in the Lions Den – in Showing – His Conduct
A) Christian Love – “Brother Saul” – Laid gentle healing hands on He who had come to bind his hands.
B) Christian Loyalty – “The Lord…sent me”
C) Christian Humility – Pointed to Christ (Didn’t condemn or Defame)
The “common” Christian is God’s arsenal. Paul had a vision – he needed a man (Cp Cornelius – Vision to send for Peter). All that counts in eternity is How I Loved God and man!
Acts 09:18 31 HOW GOD MOLDED PAUL-
Most of us know the Apostle Paul as a great preacher and missionary who helped shape the early history of the Church and who, even today, thru his inspired letters guides the Church in many of it’s decisions (Paul’s letters contain the only clear cut guidelines for Church organization in the Bible). But few people are aware of the work God did in the early years of Paul’s Christian life, before he became a Famous figure. A Brief outline of Paul’s early ministry:
1. Saved and a brief effective ministry in Damascus
2. The Revelation in the Arabian Desert (Gal 1:15 18)
3. Return to Damascus where his preaching so stirred the Jews until he must escape them by being let down from the wall in a basket.
4. To Jerusalem where he is rejected until Barnabas befriends him.
5. His preaching so angers the Grecians until they seek to kill him so the brethern send him home to Tarsus.
6. He remains in Tarsus for around 10 years until Barnabas seek him out to he spread the news to the Gentiles (Acts 11:22 26).
7. He becomes a leader in the starting of new churches and accepting Gentiles into the Body.
I. HE LEARNED THE WISDOM OF WAITING
A) In Arabia he received a Revelation from God:
1. “To reveal his Son in me” Gal 1:15 18
2. To Reveal the “Mystery” of the Church Ep 3:1 6
3. Special instructions from the Lord about Communion I Cor 11:23/ Giving Acts 20:35
B) Sometimes Withdrawal is necessary- When Paul returned to Tarsus “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria”. The Church may have needed the rest more than Paul needed to Preach!!
Nothing is known of this time in Paul’s life. If he did any great work at home the Bible doesn’t record it. It seems amazing that a man who could build strong thriving Churches in weeks in a strange country evidently did not build one of any kind in 10 years at home!!
Remember that Paul began his missionary journeys trying to get the Jews to accept Christ. It was only after their refusal that Paul turned to the Gentiles (Acts 13:46). I think [and you know how much weight I carry!!] that the persecution had convinced Paul that he must be on the wrong track. Think of it! As soon as Paul left, the Church had rest!! If the Spirit hadn’t nudged Barnabas to get Paul I think he would have stayed in Tarsus and not known exactly where to go or what to preach. But God sent for him and put his faith thru the fire to burn out the impurities and the world has never been the same since. [Some think Paul was “kept out of the way” until Peter could open the door to the Gentiles since it was to him that Christ had given the “Key”]. What a difference it makes in a person’s life when they find their place in God’s Plan!!!
II. HE WAS A WITNESS FOR GOD
A) He proclaimed what he knew 18 23 That Christ was the Son of God. (John wrote his Gospel that we might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that believing we might have life thru his name). The foundation of a Christian life must be built on the firm assurance that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died for our sins
B) He increased the more in Strength vs 22 (Grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ). Paul didn’t always know it all!! There was a time of Growth in his life.
C) He faced opposition for his belief Jews and Grecians sought to kill him. He had to believe what he proclaimed enough to die for it
Are you Yielding to God’s Molding today? or fighting God’s Plan??
Acts 11:23 PURPOSE OF HEART
Who, when Barnabas came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord (Acts 11:23).
When lay people shared Christ with others “the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord” (Acts 11:21).
You must identify your identity if you want to know who you really are- Retirement did not change the Purpose of my life journey; simply the pace and the pressure. This “Purpose” is the motivational force in a person and in a church (after all, we are the “body” of Christ) and it is the “missing ingredient” that brings about lukewarm living and relationship failures. {Example of Elisha telling the King of Israel (2Kings 13:18) to smite the ground with arrows and the king only did it three times. Elisha said his halfhearted effort would result in half completed victory} {Example of Lebanon as “Best Church in South Carolina”. Had to believe it and start acting as if that is the case}.
For the Christian, Purpose of Heart is not just a motivational method; it is about “purpose of heart that causes us to cleave to the Lord”. It is about being the best Christian we can be so we can be the best person, husband/wife, and best witness/worker for the Lord.
Here are some guidelines about finding your Purpose in life:
1. Seek Input about Purpose– All of us are smarter than any of us: Pr 20:18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.
2. Make sure your Purpose is God’s Purpose for your life: Ac 26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 2Ti 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
3. Trust God to work out the circumstances in your Purpose: Ro 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
4. When you “have a dream, share a dream”. Others ought to know your Purpose: 2Ti 3:10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
Jesus loved to tell stories about a master giving talents to his servants and then coming back to see what they had done with what He had given them- In Matt 25 He gives one man five talents, one man two, and one man one. When He returns to check on them the five had doubled, the two had doubled, but the one had hid his talent. He did not throw it away or squander it; he simply hid it.
What if God rewards you based on what you have gained with what He has given you? I encourage you tonight to determine to “cleave to the Lord with Purpose of Heart”.
Acts 12:- THE LORD’S LEADERSHIP
This Chapter (Only Place in the Bible where the word “Easter” is found) shows us many things about how God handles some difficult situations. It also raises many questions as we confirm again that God’s thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my way, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts (Is 55:8-9). Several perplexing questions are raised that have practical applications.
1. Why did God allow James to be killed by Herod and yet delivered Peter?? (Why is one person healed of a disease while it proves fatal to another? Why is one person miraculous delivered from an accident while another dies in a “simple” accident?)
2. Why did God allow the Keepers of the Jail to be killed for something they had no control over (18-19)? (Why does my wife have to miss a family gathering because I need to go to the hospital and pray for someone having surgery? Why does the rest of the family suffer emotional, financial, and physical problems when a family member has a dreaded sickness God could heal?).
3. Why wasn’t Herod killed at the beginning of the chapter instead of the end, when so many other people’s lives could have been saved? (Why doesn’t God Judge Sin Immediately? Why do the wicked seem to prosper in their wickedness while the Saints struggle to survive?).
4. Why did God wait until the night before Peter was to be executed to deliver him? (Why does God put such a premium on Patience? Why do we spend so much time “waiting and worrying” when God already knows what the outcome will be?).
5. Why did the angel have to “Smote” (To give a blow with the hand or fist) Peter to awaken him? (Sometimes I wonder if God couldn’t get my attention a little easier than He does!)
Notice how God led Peter:
A) He sent someone to help him- We look for “Miracles” instead of men.
B) He gave detailed instruction to Peter
a. Arise up quickly–vs 7
b. Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals– vs 8
c. Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me– vs 8
C) God delivered him in spite of the “Unbelief” of Peter (9) and the Praying Church (15-16).
D) The Angel led Peter until he thought Peter could find his own way and then he left him (10).
E) Peter then went to John Mark’s house after he “Considered” what to do (12)
F) After talking with the Church, Peter felt it safer to move to another unnamed place; AFTER HE HAD JUST BEEN DELIVERED FROM JAIL!
Note the Effect of all this
– vs 24 “The Word of God grew and Multiplied”
– vs 25 John Mark went with Barnabas and Paul to Antioch (Where he would eventually go with them on their missionary journey, turn back, cause the dissolution of the Barnabas-Paul team, and finally be recognized as helpful to the ministry by Paul just before he died).
If you are questioning “WHY” God is doing things the way He is today then realize afresh that HE IS GOD and MAKES NO MISTAKES.
If you are in a Difficult situation and think there is no hope; you need to realize that God has a Way out for you. Look for His leadership and ACCEPT HIS WAY.
Acts 12:23 THINGS THAT BRING GLORY TO GOD
I. WHY BRINGING GLORY TO GOD SHOULD BE OUR CHIEF GOAL:
A) The Essence of Sin is failing to bring glory to God- For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
B) Herod was slain because he failed to bring Glory to God (And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost (Acts 12:23) not when he had Christ whipped!! Nor when he cut off John the Baptist’s head!!
C) The Nation of Israel tried to change God’s glory- Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. (Jeremiah 2:11).
but God told very firmly told them, I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images (Isaiah 42:8) and sent them into captivity.
(This Same thing happens to sinful man: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. (Rom 1:21-25).
II. SOME THINGS THAT BRING GLORY TO GOD
A) Strong Faith- He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God (Romans 4:20). Without Faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6) and whatsoever is not of faith is sin (Rom 14:23). Faith is all we have to offer God! Faith in His Word, Faith in His Work, and Faith in His Way.
B) His Name- Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD (1 Chronicles 16:10).
1. Do not use it in Vain
2. Reverence and honor it (Jews. would not speak it and changed pens when writing it) Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him (Malachi 3:16-17).
3. Faithfully use it in prayer- And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son (John 14:13).
C) Witnessing- Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations (1 Chronicles 16:24).
1. If you are ashamed of Him He will be ashamed of you Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels (Mark 8:38).
2. Any father likes to hear people brag about his son- simplytell how Christ has impacted your life and that will glorify God.
D) The Heavens- The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork (Psalms 19:1).
1. Take time to observe in wonder and awe the marvels and majesty of the Heavens
2. Ponder- don’t pollute
E) Jesus Christ: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
1. He Pleased the Father- This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased
2. He Pardoned our Sin debt- Men go to Hell because they refuse to believe and accept God’s Son’s Sacrifice.
F) Salvation- His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him (Psa 21:5).
1. Glory in the Method- For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Grace means we glory in God’s saving us when we could not save ourselves.
2. Glory in God’s Subjects of Salvation- lost hell bound sinners. And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:6-9). When we get to Heaven God can say, Pick a Saint, Any Saint will do. That’s an example of my Grace and everybody will shout, “Glory”!
G) You Becoming God’s Child and showing God at work in your life brings Glory to Him- For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s (1 Corinthians 6:20). It is a dishonor to Honor to God to use your life and your body for your own selfish purposes and end up on the trash heap of Hell! You are not your own; you are bought with a price!
DO YOU BRING GLORY TO GOD, OR DO YOU LIVE ONLY FOR SELF???
Acts 13:6-13 THE PSYCHIC PHENOMENON
Paul said to him,
1- Full of all suability and all mischief
2- Thou child of the devil
3- thou enemy of all righteousness
4- will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
Note WHERE he received his “ability”:
1) The Origin of his ability- Devil
2) The Actions of his ability- Enemy of all righteousness
3) The Consequences of his ability- Defeated by God (He made others blind to God so God made him blind)
Why do you think more and more people are participating in the psychic phenomena? How do you distinguish an evil “fortune teller” from a Prophet? What is the danger of engaging in Ouija boards and tarot cards- Demon Possession?
Psychic – A person apparently responsive to psychic forces. 2. See medium. — adj. 1. Of, relating to, affecting, or influenced by the human mind or psyche; mental: psychic trauma; psychic energy.
2. a> Capable of extraordinary mental processes, such as extrasensory perception and mental telepathy. b> Of, or relating to, such mental processes.
Parapsychology -The study of the evidence for psychological phenomena, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and psychokinesis, that are inexplicable by science.
Clairvoyance . The supposed power to see objects or events that cannot be perceived by the senses. 2. Acute intuitive insight or perceptiveness.
Telepathy -Communication through means other than the senses, as by the exercise of an occult power.
Precognition – Knowledge of something in advance of its occurrence, especially by extrasensory perception; clairvoyance
Psychokinesis -The production or control of motion, especially in inanimate and remote objects, purportedly by the exercise of psychic powers. 2. Psychiatry. An uncontrolled, maniacal outburst, resulting from defective inhibition
(Deu 18:10 12) There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, {11} Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. {12} For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
Acts 14:15 WHY DO YOU DO IT?
Goal to make you better and God’s kingdom bigger by showing you that God wants you to do the right thing by making Him God instead of man.
And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: (Acts 14:15). Acts 14: 8-18
Note the condition of the man Paul healed– And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked: The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked (Acts 14:8-10).
He could not walk (sinners are unable to walk as they should). This condition was from his birth (born into sin). He heard Paul speak and developed Faith to be healed (Faith does not come from crying, sighing, trying, or feelings. It comes from hearing God’s word, believing God’s promises, and trusting God’s heart). Paul called him to act on that faith and He Leaped and Walked- Glory!
This great manifestation from God caused several to decide they needed to DO something (The world contains dreamers [think about doing something], schemers [plan to do something], and doers. It is these “Doers” that I want to talk to today because the “doing” that these “doers” wanted to do was the wrong thing to do (They wanted to worship men as “gods”). That is when Paul asked our sermon topic today: “Why do you do these things?”
Most people do what they do out of necessity or habit [“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine” John Maxwell]; for pleasure, profit, or people; because of regulations, responsibility, or respect; or because they have raced rats so long until they do not know how to not be part of the rat race.
Let me address that last one for a moment: What would happen if nothing happened about something? Some things to consider:
1) Do you really need to do anything about some things? Remember, in some situations your silence is more powerful than your words- “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” (Proverbs 17:28).
2) Is it really any of your business? “He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.” (Proverbs 26:17). Grabbing a dog by the ears may seem the way to prevent a problem but how do you let that dog go! Man who watched a man try to take a drink for twenty minutes and finally went over and drank the drink and found the man was dealing with a difficult day and now this man had drank his poison!
3) Do you know the real problem or do you simply see the ripples on the surface of a very deep pond? Crying for attention should be treated differently from crying from sickness. When the heart of the problem is a problem of the heart a Band-Aid is not the answer.
4) Will your help help or will it do more harm than good? Giving money to enable addiction or dependency eases your compassion but it actually increases the problem.
Sometimes you should consider this question, “What would happen if nothing happened?”
It is wrong to do the wrong thing (make man a god) and sometimes it is wrong to do anything but it is always right to do the right thing. What are you doing about God? It is wrong to make men into “gods” but when you hear God’s word and see God’s wonders you need to come to the living God.
Acts 15:36-41 16:- PAUL BEGINS THE SECOND MISSIONARY JOURNEY
Having decided the circumcision issue at the Counsel in Jerusalem Paul now decides to return to the Churches that were established on the first missionary journey and see how they are getting along.
I. THE COMPANIONS 15:36-41 16:1-3
A) The second journey began with a dispute over who to carry as traveling companions. Barnabas wanted to give John Mark another chance but Paul didn’t trust him to stand up under the trials of the journey. The problem was so serious until it divided the Team. Barnabas and John Mark went to Cyprus and Paul chose Silas and they went overland to visit the Churches.
-Shows that even Christians can have Personality Problems (Who was “right” in this problem? As in most cases, there was a little right in both cases. Just remember that Paul eventually accepted John Mark II Tim 4:11)
-Is it possible this problem had a reason? After the split Paul went overland to visit the Churches and eventually went to Troas and Philippi. Indications are that his and Barnabas’ original plans called for them to simply revisit the churches they had already started. Sometimes God takes our obstacles and makes them opportunities.
B) When Paul and Silas arrived at Lystra they met Timothy. Timothy had a good report of the Church and Paul decided to take him on the journey with them.
-Timothy eventually: became Paul’s “son’ in the Gospel (II Tim 1:2) and was the one Paul chose to carry on his ministry after Paul no longer could (II Tim 2:2).
-Paul made Timothy become circumcised even as he was delivering the decrees to the churches to show that circumcision was not required. He had Legal Rights and Loving Responsibilities. If Timothy was to be effective in his ministry with Paul to the Jews then he had to be willing to sacrifice his rights in order to reach others.
II. THE CALL 16:4-13
-Paul, Silas, and Timothy went to the Churches to share with them the decision of the Council at Jerusalem and to establish them in the Faith. God gave them a fruitful ministry.
-As they journeyed God kept “hedging” them in and pointing them in the direction HE wanted them to go.
-Finally Paul receives his Macedonian Call and they cross from Asia to Europe to preach the Gospel. (Significant to you and I because God closed the dour to Asia and opened it to Europe and that meant we would receive the Gospel)
-Note the “we” of vs 10. This is where Luke joined the group.
III. THE CONVERTS 16:14-40
-Since Philippi did not have a large Jewish Population Paul begins by preaching to the Ladies Prayer Meeting by the river. There, Lydia, a businesswoman of Thyatira, was converted and became the home base of the work.
-A demon possessed girl began to harass the Team and finally Paul commanded the Demon to leave the girl. This caused a stir because the girl’s masters saw they would lose money because the girl could no longer “tell fortunes”. They had Paul and Silas arrested, beaten and cast into prison.
-At the midnight hour, as Paul and Silas prayed and sang, there was an earthquake that loosed the bonds of the Prisoners and caused the Jailor to realize his need of Salvation. He was saved and took Paul and Silas into his home where he ministered to them. These verses show us
THE 4 THINGS THAT A SINNER NEEDS TO BE SAVED:
1. A Going Saint- I am just as important to a man’s salvation as Christ! What good is the Gospel if no one hears it? What good is it to have the keys to the jail if you won’t open the door? The Ethiopian Eunuch said, ”How can I understand except some man guide me?” God’s command to us “YE shall be Witnesses”.
A) He needs a BURDEN- “Come over and Help us” Do you have a Burden for the Lost or have you Lost your Burden?
B) He cam expect a BLESSING- He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. (Psalms 126:6).
1) Lydia and the Jailor and their households were saved.
2) Food for the Soul winner- Lydia (vs 1} and Jailor. (34).
3) Joy for all- Preacher and the Saved.
C) He can expect a BEATING- When you stir the water the dirt will begin to fly. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me (Matthew 16:24).
2. A Drawing Spirit- ”Whose heart the Lord opened” vs 14 Except the Father draw a man he cannot come. The Spirit: A) CALLS- Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. The Spirit takes the Preached Word and uses it to speak to the sinner’s heart.
B) CONVICTS- For some it is a simple sermon. For others it takes an earthquake! But the Spirit makes you realize you are lost and have a need.
C) CEASES- The same sun that melts snow hardens concrete. The masters of the demon possessed girl were not interested in the Gospel: they wanted only Gain.
3. A Sufficient Savior- “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved”
A) Able to pay a debt I couldn’t pay- wages of sin is Death
B) Able to conquer an enemy t couldn’t conquer- Satan The sinner must not only realize how bad he is but he also must know how able God is to overcome his problems.
4. A Willing Heart- ”What must I do to be Saved?” Once you realize you’re lost, and repent of sin, you need to receive Christ as Savior. It’s not enough to know that God will save you. You must accept Christ and follow Him.
Acts 16:9-15 CHRIST THE CENTER (Philippians)
Philippi was the gateway to Europe. This is God opening the door to Foreign Missions for the early Church. Just like today, several ingredients are necessary to begin a new work:
1) Called by a Vision- definite call of God to go to a place. (Mill Branch beginning)
2) Began in a Prayer Meeting- Find where God is working and get in the middle of it.
3) Had a diverse group to work with- Lydia the business woman, Demon possessed Girl, Jailor
The Roman empire of that day was beginning its decline (like America today). It was still a major Military power but its moral fiber was beginning to rot away from the inside- Like America today where Friends makes illicit sex fun and funny, where Americas top models make nudity fashionable, and where women who sleep with their neighbors or with their gardeners are called Desperate Housewives instead of sluts. Adding to the problem was the fact that religion was rampant as priests and gods competed on almost every corner for peoples allegiance and dollars.
God knew that someone needed to tell these people the truth before it was eternally too late so he establishes a Church on a simple principle- Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Several years later, Paul is again in prison and his heart turns again to these Philippian believers. Guided by God, Paul pins one of his most inspiring books as he celebrated the Joy that is ours in a relationship with Christ.
1) Christ our Life– For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21)
2) Christ our Mind– Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; (Philippians 2:5‑10)
3) Christ our Goal– Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil 3:13‑14)
4) Christ our Strength– I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me (Philippians 4:13). We are able to change because of Christ.
Are you looking for real Joy? Are you tired of a life of No Peace, No Plan, and No Power? Come to Christ today and let Him change your life.43 years ago Christ changed my life; from persona experience I can tell you that Christianity is real and it really works.
Acts 16:25-34 FAMILY SALVATION
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house (Acts 16:30-34).
What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth (Psalms 25:12-13). For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession. The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein (Psalms 69:35-36).
But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children (Psalms 103:17). The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee (Psalms 102:28).
Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered (Proverbs 11:21). In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge (Proverbs 14:26).
The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him (Proverbs 20:7).
But Remember: The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him (Ezekiel 18:20).
Acts 16:30 4 THINGS NECESSARY FOR A MAN TO BE SAVED
The most important decision anyone will ever make is their decision about Salvation. What are the necessary “ingredients” for such a decision? What’s your part?
1. GOD– The Supreme One we ALL must ANSWER to.
A) Reveals His HOLY STANDARD we must meet; not our Personal Standards (goodness) or Society’s Requirements. God is the one that has been sinned against and He is the one you must answer to.
B) Reveals His CONCERN for us by the convicting work of the Holy Spirit (Unless the Spirit draws you you cannot be saved). Problems, Pains, and Preaching all combine to bring you to the knowledge that you need God.
2. SINNER– One who has offended God in some way. Must be SAVED
A) FROM God’s Wrath All have sinned and Wages of Sin is Death.
B) TO God’s Wealth and Work to as many as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of god. From a Hell bound Sinner to a Heaven Bound Saint!!
3. TRUTH– The Message from God to the Sinner
A) Must be the Truth II Pet 1:16 for we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. There are multitudes of beliefs and doctrines in the world today. Some teach you are saved by joining the Church or by being baptized. Some teach meditation and mind control. Some teach “doctrines of Devils”. But the only one that is right is the one that exalts Jesus Christ as the Savior who died on the cross as payment for your sins, who was buried, and then resurrected and will one day come again for His people.
B) Must be Proclaimed In Acts 8:26-40 the Ethiopian Eunuch had to have a man to lead him. He was reading the Bible, had been to Church, and was concerned enough to travel hundreds of miles but someone had to proclaim the message.
C) Must be Accepted Jesus continually warned about people who had ears to hear and yet would not hear. You cannot simply know the “boat” will save you; you must take a step of faith and get in.
4. FAITH The “bridge” between God and Man. To Believe means to Cling to, Rely on, Trust in. for by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of god, not of works lest any man should boast. Eph 2:8 9 This Faith Produces
A) Repentance A turning away from sin. A sorrow for sin that causes you to want to “Break” with it. Not just sorrow because of what happens as a result of your sin but because it was against God.
B) Acceptance The “vacuum” of abandoned sin must be replaced with Abundant Life in Christ or you’ll end up worst off than before.
What do you receive when you receive Christ? II Tim 1:9 who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.
1. Pardon from Sin’s Punishment
2. Peace WITH God and the Peace OF God.
3. Placement in the Body of Christ that gives you Purpose in life and rewards at death.
Everything Necessary for your Salvation is in Place. ARE YOU SAVED?
Acts 16:- WHAT A SINNER NEEDS TO GET SAVED
Today I’m going to deal with the most important thing in the Bible Soul Winning! It’s nice to read history and important to study doctrine but, (I Tim 1:15) This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
I. A GOING SAINT “I am just as important to a man’s salvation as Christ- for how shall they hear with out a preacher?”
A) Burden- “Come over and Help us” What good is a fire truck if no one operates it. What good to have the keys to the jail if you won’t open the door?? Remember the Ethiopian Eunuch- “How can I except some man guide me?” Remember Jesus’ last command, “Ye shall be witnesses”
B) Blessing- Lydia Saved “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him” (Ps 126:6) He that winneth souls is wise
1. Household saved- Lydia’s (vs 15) and Jailers (vs 33)
2. Food for soul winner- stayed at Lydia’s and Jailers, (I have meat to eat that you know not of- Jesus after winning Samaritan woman)
3. Joy for saved (vs 34) never saw an unhappy saved man
C) Beatings- jail, stripes, cross bearing, etc. (Ex of Toby who woke me up to borrow my car to find lost boy)
II. A DRAWING SPIRIT vs 14 Whose heart the Lord opened. Except the Father draw a man he can’t come
A) Calls-Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word
B) Convicts- He shall reprove the world (Makes you realize you are lost). (Example of me lost in woods- I needed to know I was lost before became concerned)
C) Ceases- The same sun that melts snow hardens concrete. He that being often reproved heardeneth his neck shall suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy. My spirit shall not always strive with man.
III. A SUFFICIENT SAVIOR “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved”
A) Able to pay a debt I could not pay- Rom 6:23 wages of sin is death
B) Able to live a life I could not live- all have sinned Rom 3:23
C) Able to conquer an enemy I couldn’t conquer- Able to save to the uttermost because He conquered sin and death by His death and resurrection
IV. A WILLING HEART “What must I do to be saved”
A) Realize you’re lost
B) Repent of Sin- change your mind about them and turn from them
C) Receive Christ- Cling to, rely on and trust in Christ
WHAT HINDERS YOU FROM BEING SAVED TODAY????
Acts 16:30-31 SAVED AND SURE
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house (Acts 16:30-31).
The MOST IMPORTANT information you will ever possess is the Assurance that you are a Saved Child of God. You must know that your Faith is not in your Faith but your Faith is in God’s Word and His Plan of Redemption. (When you come to an alligator infested river and you are told a boat can carry you across to safety it is not enough to say you believe the boat can carry you across; YOU MUST GET IN THE BOAT!).
Believe means to Cling to, Trust in, and Rely on. It is not a mental exercise; it is a total soul acceptance of a life (and eternity) transforming Truth. Assurance is the believer’s full conviction that through the work of Christ alone, received by faith, you are in possession of a salvation in which you will be keep by the power of God. It is not a plan you endorse; but a person you accept (You open your life to Christ’s pardon and control).
Man was made perfect, He sinned and broke his relationship with God. God said He would provide a way for man to renew that relationship. For hundreds of years God allowed man to try his own way back to God: Follow your Conscience, Obey the Law, be ruled by various Governments, and, finally, develop Religious Rules and Traditions. None of them worked. Until God sent His only begotten Son to die on a cross as a payment for your sin debt and then sent the Holy Spirit to enlighten and energize Christians so they could carry the Gospel to all the world.
Assurance is based on:
I. BLOOD: In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; (Ephesians 1:7).
II. BOOK: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name (John 20:31).
III BIRTH: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). Not Reform but Re-Born- Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; (Titus 3:5).
IV. BELIEF: Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: (Romans 3:22). But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Romans 10:8-10).
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (Romans 5:1).
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God (1 John 5:13).
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name (John 20:31).
Acts 17:6 HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR CHRIST
(Acts 17:6) And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
A) BE CONVERTED–
1> Wicked Walk- (Ephesians 2:2) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
2> Working Walk- (Ephesians 2:8 10) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
3> Watchful Walk- (Ephesians 5:15) See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
B) BE CONCERNED– (Psalms 142:4) I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
C) BE CONTAGIOUS– Ac 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
D) BE COURAGEOUS– (Hebrews 13:6) So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
E) BE CHRISTIAN– (John 3:18) He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Acts 17:11 The Word of God
We have seen that the Disciples on the road to Emmaus developed a case of “Holy Heart Burn” when Jesus began to explain the Scriptures to them. That’s what I want to see happen in our Church. I want to see the members of our Church full of enthusiasm and excitement about the work and ministry of this Church. I want to see Teachers and Officers dedicated to their work and consecrated to the Lord. I want us to applaud the singing, appreciate the services, and apply the sermons.
That will only come about when we develop a steadfast love for, and devotion to, God. And that comes about from getting to Know God and appreciate what He’s done for you at Calvary as you study and hear the Word of God. That’s why we are going to adopt a motto for the coming year- “We’ll read the Bible all the way thru in 1992”. I want as many people as possible to dedicate themselves to reading the entire Bible next year; as we dedicate ourselves as a Church to emphasis Bible Study, Bible Standards, and Bible Salvation as we become like the church at Berea- These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so (Acts 17:11)
One man described our obligations to the Bible like this: The Bible:
Know it in your head
Stow it in your heart
Show it in your life
Sow it in the world
Read it to be wise
Believe it to be safe
Practice it to be Holy
Dig it up / Write it down / Pray it through / Live it out / Pass it on
WHY IS THE BIBLE SO IMPORTANT???
1. We’re Saved by the Word Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls (James 1:21). The only hope a sin sick world has is Christ. As we proclaim the Word of God we lift Him up and He said, And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me (John 12:32). Keep the Word in your conversation so God can use it to convict men’s hearts- One little girl knew only “And God shall judge all men” but God used that to convict her neighbor.
2. We Grow by the Word As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: (1 Pet 2:2). It is our Bread and Milk to develop as Christians. We can’t grow eating the chaff of the world; it takes the meat of the word.
3. Changed by the Word But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Cor 3:18). You can’t consistently read the Word of God without it producing a change in you, in your attitude, and in your actions.
4. Cleansed by the Word Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word (Psa 119:9). Why do I ALWAYS read a verse that condemns by lukewarm spirit, or my doubtful heart, or my wicked thoughts, etc.
5. Kept by the Word Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee (Psa 119:11). The Word will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the word.
6. Share God’s life thru the Word It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life (John 6:63).
7. Faith is the Victory For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith (1 John 5:4). Faith come from hearing the Word (Rom 10: 17). I stand with Daniel and David and Gideon; Victory is mine in Christ.
In old days before flashlights, a preacher had to travel thru some heavy woods following service and he didn’t have a lantern. An old farmer saw his dilemma and got him a pine knot out of his wagon. The Preacher asked him very pointedly if it would last and the farmer said, “I’ve used one before. It will last”. I’ve used the Bible for years now; it will last!
Acts 17 gives us 3 ways people deal with the preaching of God’s Word [Note how often you see these responses in the world today]:
1) Thessalonica- RESISTED the Word because of Envy over the success of Paul’s Preaching during which Paul A) Reasoned about the Word. B) Explained the message of the Word. C) Proved (Alleging) that the Word was true by presenting evidence of its truthfulness. D) Announced the Good News of the Word [Preached].
2) Berea- RECEIVED the Word because they were more “Noble” (Willing to give it a chance so they could learn if it worked by daily studying the Word)
3) Athens- RIDICULED the Word because of their belief in many gods; including an “Unknown god”.
Acts 17:23 PRIMARY QUESTION
If a plane engine suddenly crashed through the ceil of this church, killing your wife/mother and injuring you would it be 1) an attack of Satan, 2) a punishment of God, or 3) a sorry “no name airline” mechanic?
There are four questions asked by all people of all cultures:
1. What is Knowledge? How do we know things? How do we know that we know? You say you love that woman who died- why is she more special to you than someone else? How do you know that you love her?
2. What is Truth? How do we know truth is true? {Why is my Bible better than your Bible?} How do we find truth? Meditation, isolation, education?
3. What should be our conduct? How should our life be lived? Who decided what is right and wrong conduct? What does it mean to be Happy and is it my right to expect to be Happy? Do we need a government to control and regulate us? Who decides who that government is and how that government operates?
4. Primary Question asked by every culture- Is there a God? Followed immediately by several other questions, “How does God reveal Himself?” “Is God actively involved in the circumstances of life?” “Does God want anything from me?” Which brings us to our scripture- For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you (Acts 17:23).
• I believe there is a God- no matter how far you trace evolution back someone had to create that first grain of sand. As a Christian, I believe God not only reveals Himself in nature (The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork Psalms 19:1) but He has also revealed Himself in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ- “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
• I believe that God is in charge of the chaos of the cosmos.
I believe God created the heavens and the earth and brought order out of the chaos.
I believe God likes order (Let all things be done decently and in order– 1 Corinthians 14:40) and He plans His plans on order (Bible: 66 books, 39-27 17-5-17 5-12 9-3).
I realize circumstances and catastrophes happen that we cannot reasonably explain or completely comprehended but I trust God’s plan (If not even a bird falls without God’s knowledge (Matt 10:19) then surely an airplane engine’s fall is known by God) and I rest in God’s heart.
• I believe God desires me to worship Him; not because of ego but because God’s omnipotence and love deserve my homage. I believe God wants a relationship; that sin broke that relationship, and only faith in the sacrificial debt paying death of Christ can restore that relationship.
My life questions are answered by my relationship with God through Christ. Wondrous peace, glorious joy. Our goal is to Know Him. Our life is to Show Him. This is Christianity and it can change your life!
Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection (Acts 17:18).
Epicureans: A “Force” greater than us exist but it is not concerned with our actions and activities on the earth.
Stoicks: A “god” may be out there but he gave us wisdom to become better and better (“Ye shall be as gods!”) and a passion for pleasure.
Acts 17:22-33 WHAT EVERY PERSON NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT GOD-
Intro: We find the apostle Paul in Athens, the commercial, intellectual, cultural, and financial center of the world in his day. He witnessed a city given to idolatry and immorality. His spirit was stirred within him. (verse 16). He found that these people did not have a proper knowledge of God. We live in a great country that stills know little about God. Illustration: Paul Harvey said “Missionaries come home we need you”
1. AN EXISTING GOD
a. He is the power behind every thought of our brain, behind every beat of our heart, and breath of air we breathe.
b. Testimony of Nature
c. Testimony of Man
d. Testimony of Jesus
2. AN EMINENT GOD

3. AN EMBRACING GOD verse 27
a. “He is not far from every one of us” verse 27
b. God’s love changed John Newton

4. AN EXPECTING GOD verses 30-33
a. God as loving as He is still demands a choice be made between Him and sin
b. We are given opportunity to repent or perish. Luke 13:5 Jesus said except Ye repent ye will all likewise perish.
c. Look at the response the people gave
(1) Some rejected
(2) Some procrastinated

Acts 17:23 THE UNKNOWN GOD
Acts 17:23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
REASONS GOD IS UNKNOWN:
A) SO BUSY WITH OUR PLANS UNTIL WE MISS GOD: Jacob at Bethel- Gen 28:16 17 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not. And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
B) SIN IN OUR LIFE: Samson didn’t realize that the Spirit of the Lord had departed. Judges 16:19 20 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.
We are in the world and sometimes we allow the spirit of the world to seduce us. We continue to try to do God’s work without God’s power and end up grinding for the enemy. If you don’t know God is missing you are headed for Defeat: Deut 1:42 And the Lord said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.
C) UNBELIEF HIDES GOD: Disciples on the road to Emmasus did not recognize the Lord–even when he walked and talked with them!! Luke 24:15 16 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
D) “SCIENCE” HIDES GOD: John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR US TO KNOW GOD?
A. God is seeking people to have a RELATIONSHIP with Him. Sin must be dealt with because it hinders that relationship but handling the sin is not the only thing God is trying to do- He wants us to KNOW Him and Fellowship with Him. John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
B. Knowing Him helps us OVERCOME TEMPTATION: II Pet 1:3 4 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
HOW CAN WE COME TO KNOW GOD?
A) Allow the Spirit to Reveal Him to Us- I Cor 2:11 12 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. I Cor 2: 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
B) Listen to the Man of God and the Word of God- I Cor 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
C) Make it our CHIEF GOAL in life to Know Him- The Apostle Paul: Phil 3:8,10 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus:… That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; Paul wanted to know (1) His Person, (2) His Power, and (3) His Pain.
Sin is “Missing the Mark” of God’s Plan for our Life. Jesus was the only human who did not “miss the Mark”. If we are to know God then we must learn to be like the one who “always hit the Bulls Eye”- Jesus
Acts 18:24-28; 19:1-7 THE APOLLOS PROBLEM
One of the most often quoted letters in the New Testament is the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. It talks about our Standing In Christ, The Basis of our Salvation, The “Body Principle” of the Church, The Filling with the Holy Spirit, and the Spiritual Warfare in which Christians are engaged. It’s hard to believe that such a Church had its beginning amidst controversy and confusion.
Because Christians today are faced with the same Controversies and Confusions, I want to see WHAT causes the Problems, HOW God dealt with the difficulties, and WHY this makes it so vitally important that Christians today become active in Church attendance so they can learn the Basics of their Beliefs.
Some BACKGROUND- Paul had been forbidden to go to Ephesus on his second Missionary Journey. He had a great desire to go there but the Holy Spirit wanted him to begin the spread of Christianity in Europe by preaching (and being jailed!) in Philippi. But now, on his third Missionary Journey, Paul is making a bee line to Ephesus. As he does, the Holy Spirit reveals part of the Reason behind the delay- The Apollos Problem.
Before we explain the Problem it is good to note the IMPORTANCE OF STAYING ON GOD’S TIME TABLE. Often in our lives, God will work situations and circumstances beyond our understanding. That’s because we are looking at the wrong clock! We look at the clock that ticks with our Pain, or Persecution, or Patience and wonder why God has forgotten us. It’s important that we realize that God’s clock is Straight instead of Round- God sees all of time at one instance, we only see the day or hour in which we are struggling.
I. THE MINISTRY OF APOLLOS 18:24 28 19:1
A) His Character Eloquent: A good Speaker
Learned in the Scripture: Alexandria, Egypt was a center of Jewish study
Feverent in Spirit: desired to do God’s Will
B) His Fault He was instructed in the way of the Lord, but only as far as John the Baptist’s Preaching (Repentance without Resurrection. Service without Salvation).
C) His Helpers Aquila and Priscilla taught him the Gospel of the Grace of God thru Christ and he became a great preacher
D) His Preaching was so much more eloquent than Paul’s until it eventually caused problems in the Corinthian Church when members looked at men instead of the message. Shows that the ability to speak and the desire to speak must be coupled with the right thing to speak!!
II. THE MANIFESTATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT 19:1 8
Paul finds twelve disciples (of Apollos’ Preaching??) who had been baptized unto John’s Baptism but had never received Christ as Savior. When they were baptized in the name of Jesus and Paul laid hands on them they began to speak in various languages. This was a sign to the large Jewish Population at Ephesus that Jesus was indeed the Messiah (See I Cor 14:21 22). Paul used this as a basis to begin preaching to the Jews in the synagogue the things concerning the Kingdom of God.
Be careful that you don’t take God’s Plan for someone else and apply it to yourself. The Christian today receives the Holy Spirit as soon as he is converted and tongues are not necessary.
III. THE MIRACLES OF PAUL 19:9 20
A) Some of the Jews hardened their hearts and would not believe Paul’s Preaching so he took the Church and met in the school of Tyrannus for 2 years. The preaching, teaching, and changed lives spread the Gospel all over that part of the Country. (Is our Community affected by our Church??)
B) God worked SPECIAL miracles by the hands of Paul which included healing by touching Paul’s handkerchiefs or apron (See Mk 5:27 30) and the casting out of evil spirits. The key word is Special. This was an unusual happening and should not be used to build doctrine.
C) The Exorcist Jews decided to imitate Paul to show that they could do the same things. The 7 sons of Sceva (a chief Priest in the Ephesus Synagogue) attempted to cast out demons but were overcome and sent naked from the house. Be careful how you Play with the Serious. They were religious and knew what to say but they were defeated because they didn’t have the Person of Jesus to grant them Authority or the Power of the Holy Spirit to fight for them.
D) This defeat caused other people of Ephesus to realize the folly of following the occult and many believed on Jesus, confessed their deeds, and burnt their books They made a clean break with sin.
Intellect is not always Inspiration. Zeal must be properly directed.
Faith comes by Hearing but you must hear the right message! Popular Messengers are not always right- Apollos
John’s baptism was anticipation of the Spirit’s coming. Believers today are baptized in realization that the Spirit has come to live in us.

Acts 19 THE NAMES OF GOD
One of the most embarrassing situations a person gets into is not knowing someone’s name. In some ways that insinuates that you don’t value the person. Flip the Coin, the most beautiful music to most people is the sound of their name being recognized and honored.
Then what a joy it is to get to know a person so well until you can call them by their “pet” name or their “nick” name. That’s when you feel like you are their friend- John 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. That’s what I want us to do today, get to know God’s name so well until we feel comfortable in talking with Him. As Christians, we spend much of our time in this life, and all of our time in eternity, fellowshipping with God. That means we need to become familiar with His names.
God has 3 PRIMARY NAMES:
1- God– El, Elah, Elohim (The Strong One- used around 2500 times). In its COMBINATION FORMS it shows us much of the character of Elohim:
A> El Shaddai (Gen 17:1- Almighty God). “Shaddai” literally means “The breasted one”. It is used to show that God is our Nourisher and Satisfier. It is also interesting to note that it first occurs when God is promising seed to a 99 year old man.
B> El Elyon (Gen 14:18- Most High God). First used by Melchizedek to describe God as “Possessor of heaven and earth”. It so impressed Abraham until he gave him tithe of all. The “Most High God” confirms to us that God is in control of Heavenly and earthly situations.
C> El Olam (Gen 21:33- Everlasting God). First used by Abraham after his covenant with Abimelech. It showed that God knew about the covenant that Abraham made and God confirmed it as an everlasting covenant. It is interesting to note that immediately after Abraham called God by this name he was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac (Child of the covenant Promise). He could do so knowing that the “Everlasting God” would somehow raise us his son in order to keep covenant.
2- LORD– Jehovah (The Self Existent One who reveals himself) [ALL letter capital in King James Version]
Jehovah Elohim- LORD God (The self existent one who is strong)
Jehovah Sabaoth- LORD of Hosts (I Sam 1:3) (Heavenly Host who help
God’s people during time of need)
Jehovah Tsidkenu- The LORD our Righteousness (Jer 23:6)
Jehovah M’kaddesh- The LORD Sanctifies
Jehovah Shalom- The LORD is Peace (Jud 6:24)
Jehovah Shammah- The LORD is There (Present) (Ezek 48:35)
Jehovah Rapha- The LORD that Heals (Ex 15:26)
Jehovah Jireh- The LORD will Provide (Gen 22:13-14)
Jehovah Nissi- The LORD our Banner (Ex 17:8-15)
Jehovah Rohi (Raah)- The LORD our Shepherd (Ps 23:1)
3- Lord (Adon or Adonai– Master. The same word is used for man and God. The Bible distinguished the difference by capitalizing the word when it is used for God. Sarah called Abraham “lord”).
Adonai Jehovah- Lord God (Gen 15:2- Abraham talking with God about the covenant that existed between them.)
Make God’s name part of your communication every day. Let Him be your Friend as well as Father
Acts 19:8 20 Playing with the Serious
If you saw a youngster playing with a LOADED PISTOL as if it were a toy gun you’d take it from him lest he harm himself and others. In the same way God is showing us in today’s text about some that are PLAYING when they should be serious.
I. THOSE THAT PLAYED AT BEING CHRISTIANS vs 13 16
A) Self Appointed and not Spirit Anointed. They “Took upon them” to do the Lord’s work. They were Energized by the Flesh instead of being sent by the Spirit. (People decide to start to Church, to do Better, etc. without being Born Again)
B) Religious without the reality of the Religion. They were the “Sons of the Chief Priest”. They represent good moral people raised in the Church who know the answers but they don’t know the Questions. They could tell you about Jonah and Moses and people like that but they didn’t know what they meant.
C) Language without the Life to back it up. “We adjure you by Jesus”. They knew the Talk but didn’t have the Walk. (“Religious” jewelry on indecent dressed people. People who claim to be “Born Again” but still sing in night clubs, etc.). To these people Jesus was a “magic potion” they could use to get their way.
D) Profession without Power “Jesus I know and Paul I know but who are you?”. They had no Power because they :
1. Were Prayerless: The Disciples found that the Demon possessed lad at the Mount of Transfiguration could not be cleansed because they had failed in their Prayer life. Mk 9:14 29
2. Had no Passion for souls not interested in the man. Simply wanted an “experience”.
3. Had no Perseverance Ran when things got rough.
Note their PERIL 1 man defeated these 7, exposing their nakedness and showing the world what they really were. Matt 7:22 23 many will say to me in that day, lord, lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? and then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
One day a doctor put something in my heart so he could see if there was anything there that shouldn’t be. In much the same way, God looks inside our Spiritual heart and determines if we are a Sham or Serious
II. THE SERIOUS SAVED vs 18 20
A) Saved by Faith in Christ “They Believed” and as a result were Born Again. They didn’t just talk it, they followed up.
B) Honest Confession They “Shewed their deeds”. They confessed their sin to be SIN.
C) Totally abandoned old way of life They “Burned the Books” on the way they used to live. Determined to live different.
D) Allowed the Word of God to prevail in their life. vs 20 “So mightily grew the Word of God and prevailed”. They Grew in the Grace and Knowledge of Christ as they studied and applied God’s word.
YOU CAN LIVE THE LIFE OF AN IMITATOR AND BE PREVAILED AGAINST. vs 16
OR YOU CAN SUBMIT TO GOD AND PREVAIL VS 20 Don’t play “Russian Roulette” with your soul.
Acts 20:21 REPENTANCE FAITH
Ac 20:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Heb 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Mr 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
The person who believes repents and the person who repents believes.
God saves us from hell in order that we might glorify His Son, Jesus Christ- not just so we can escape Hell.- Ro 14:8-9 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.
Acts 20:35 THE JOY OF GIVING?
Theme Verse: Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? (Psalms 85:6)
When questioned about His health here is what God might say, “Spiritually I am doing great but my body is giving me some problems. My Hands are not working very well, My eyes are looking at things that hurt my heart, my mouth is talking about people instead of sharing about Jesus, My feet are always too tired to go where I need them to go, and my heart is sad instead of rejoicing.
I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35)
- It brings Joy to God when we Give Our Resources as we should. Guidelines for Giving: As Christians distribute to the necessities of saints (Rom. 12:13) they are to do it:
- Cheerfully- Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7) There are three kinds of givers ‑‑ the flint, the sponge and the honeycomb. To get anything out of a flint you must hammer it. And then you get only chips and sparks. To get water out of a sponge you must squeeze it, and the more you use pressure, the more you will get. But the honeycomb just overflows with its own sweetness. Which kind of giver are you?
- With simplicity- he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. (Romans 12:8). But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:3-4)
- Regularly: Money is to be set aside on the first day of the week as God has prospered us- Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. (1 Corinthians 16:2)
- Faithfully: Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. (1 Corinthians 4:2). A tenth is a tenth no matter if it comes from ten dollars or of ten million dollars. A man received a sharp letter from one of his creditors demanding payment. He wrote back to the firm and said, “Dear Sir. Every month I take all the bills I have and put them on the table, shuffle them, and pick out six, which I pay. Now, if I have any more trouble out of you, next month you’ll be out of the shuffle entirely.” Have you shuffled God out of your giving?
In the United States, for example, of every $100 earned:
$40 for Home
$20 for Taxes
$22 for Food
$6.60 is spent on recreation and amusement
$5.80 buys clothes
$2.40 buys alcohol
$2.50 buys tobacco
$1.30 is given for religious and charitable uses, and only a small part of that goes outside the U.S.
A faithful Christians use of his possessions, time and talents is governed by New Testament principles. The central passage is 2 Cor. 8, 9, which sets forth Christ as the believers example in giving. Extraordinary promises are given to those who give
- Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, Luke 6:38.
- He who soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully, 2 Cor. 9:6.
- God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, Heb. 6:10.
- Giving of Our self: Think of this Example- A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. (Proverbs 15:13).
What costs nothing but creates much?
What enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give it?
What happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.
None are so rich that they can get along without it and none are so poor but they are richer for it.
It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business and is the mark of friends.
It is rest to the weary, uplifting to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad and nature’s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away! It is a simple Smile.
And if it ever happens that some people should be too tired to give you a smile, why not leave one of yours? For nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give.
‑‑ Leonard Turner, The Union Express.
The Gift of Sacrifice: (Remember it is more blessed to give than to receive) A woman missionary in the South Pacific Islands was explaining to a group of children the custom and significance of giving gifts at Christmas. “Giving gifts,” she said, “expresses love and reminds us of the perfect gift of love we received from God: Jesus.” Later that week, a young native boy came to the missionary’s side and said, “I love you and want you to have this.” He pulled from a straw basket the most beautiful shell the missionary had ever seen. As she admired its beauty, she recognized it as a special shell only found on the far side of the island, a half day’s walk from the village. When confronted by this, the boy smiled and said, “Long walk part of gift!” God “walked” 2000 years with his people before sending the gift of Jesus. And he has walked 2000 more years expressing the significance of Him!
It Brings Joy to God when we Give Him our Heart– Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. (Luke 15:10)
Acts 20:35 THE GIFT OF GIVING
Acts 20:35 I have showed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
Someone once said the most sensitive nerve in the human body is the one that leads to the pocketbook! It is true that Money is a touchy subject with many people and one they think the Church should stay away from (That’s why we don’t normally receive offerings during Revivals and we don’t sell items as a Church). But the handling of money is taught about extensively in the Word of God; and Giving is one of the Gifts that is imparted to help the work of the Body of Christ (Rom 12:8).
It is important to note that EVERYONE IS COMMANDED TO GIVE TO THE WORK OF GOD. People under the law were required to give a TITHE (10% of your income). Living under Grace simply means that the tithe should be surpassed. This kind of normal Giving is NOT the Gift of Giving. It is the normal expected part of Christian living- 1 Cor 16:2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
The GIFT OF GIVING is a special ability, given by the Holy Spirit, that allows an individual to see and meet needs. It normally involves the dispensing of financial funds to the work of God or to those in need.
Romans 12:8 says that the Gift of Giving involves giving with SIMPLICITY- “Simplicity” literally means “without folds” [A treasurer once told me that they could tell the spiritually of the congregation by the way the money looked. If it was flat then they were in a giving mood. If it was all folded and creased then they had been struggling with giving!]. We take the word today to mean “uncomplicated” or “without added strings”.
The person with the gift of giving will give with singleness of mind. No ulterior motive will cause them to fold the money in two. He will not give to salve a conscience nor will he give to gain something in return. He also will not give for public display (As the Pharisees who blew a trumpet so everyone would know that they were giving). Much of the giving will involve Secrecy as well as Simplicity- Mat 6:3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:).
To Sum it up, the person with the Gift of Giving will give Liberally, without regard for Praise or Repayment, and in such a way as to make the person who receives from them feel good about the gift. The gift of giving involves giving Freely, with delight, and with love
Here are some principles that should be followed by those with the Gift of Giving; and by anyone who gives:
1) Be a Cheerful giver- 2 Cor 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. The Greek word “Cheerful” is translated “Hilarious” in English. The gift of Giving will make the offering a happy occasion, an opportunity to give back Cheerfully to God a portion of that He has given you.
2) Give Liberally from a heart of Love. The bare minimum is alright for a tip but not a gift for God. Don’t look at how much you are giving, look at how much God has blessed you. Giving is not based on your INCOME but on your heart. I know some people who give greatly out of their poverty while others hardly give out of their plenty- 2 Cor 8:1-2 Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; 2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.
3) Give Correctly- Giving should make sure that God’s work will be helped. We must not give carelessly and indiscriminately, scattering to every person or group who begs. Giving is not in response to emotional or sentimental appeals; it is based on the knowledge that the ministry or need is using the money to advance the work of God (If I were to attend a Cult service of some kind, I would not feel obligated to, or desirous of, giving to their ministry. I also feel no need to give to help cripple boys when the money is actually building air conditioned dog houses).
Giving is a grace that can be cultivated. As you advance from victory to victory in your stewardship God will provide you the ability to give more and the joy of giving will energize your life.
Just be aware that Money can Trap as well as Bless- 1 Tim 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Acts 22:1-16 SHARING YOUR FAITH
KNOW SOME THINGS ABOUT YOUR SALVATION BEFORE YOU SHARE YOUR SALVATION.
BEFORE YOU WERE SAVED:
1. What was the deep inner need in your life that caused you to recognize your need of a change?
2. Give some examples of how you tried to find satisfaction apart from God.
HOW YOU WERE SAVED:
1. Describe the circumstances that caused you to consider coming to Christ.
2. State how you trusted Christ (Make sure to include the Gospel)
AFTER YOU WERE SAVED:
1. Give an example of how Christ is meeting your inner needs now.
2. End with a positive statement about the assurance of Salvation you have in Christ.
CONVERSION CONVERSATIONS:
1. “Warm up” the conversation
2. Look for expressed needs by the person you are talking too
3. Try to relate your past problems to these needs
4. Find general areas of concern to begin discussing- drugs, war, unsure future, etc
5. Build a relationship with the person- You aren’t trying to Sell them, you’re trying to get them SAVED.
6. Don’t condemn them because they don’t act like Christians; THEY AREN’T.
7. Avoid making Promises God cannot keep- Becoming a Christian will save your marriage.
8. Bring the conversation to a place for the person to respond- “Has anything like this ever happened to you?” “Do you know for certain where you will spend eternity?” “Are you looking for some way to bring stability to your future?” “Can I help you understand more about becoming a Christians?” “Would you like to talk more about this later?”
Acts 26:28 BEING A CHRISTIAN
Acts 26: 28, 11:26, 1Pet 4:16
The most important decision you’ll ever make is your decision about your relationship to Jesus Christ. This is what we mean when we ask people to be Born Again- we ask them to accept by Faith Jesus Christ as Savior and become a Christian. But many people have misunderstood what it means to be a Christian (Example of mountain climber who fell to his death because he thought a bunch of spider webs was a rock) and they will go to Hell when they die because they’re holding to the wrong thing.
There are only 3 times in the Bible that the word Christian is used and they tell us what it means to be a Christian.
I. THE PERSUASION INVOLVED Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian (Acts 26:28). Agrippa believed the Bible (vs 27) and knew about Christ (vs 26), but he was not willing to make the step of commitment. There are 2 things we must be persuaded about if we’re to become a Christian:
1. Persuaded about our Sinfulness- We must be persuaded that all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God (Rom 3:23) and that there is none righteous, no, not one (Rom 3:10). We must face the fact of our sin (Not mistakes, nor human fragilities; but rebellion against a Holy God and his plans for our life.). Too many people are like the Beauty contest for women over 40- anyone pretty enough to enter was unwilling to admit she was over 40!! Do you know YOU are a sinner and that that sin separates you from God???
2. Persuaded about the Savior- Jesus Christ
A) Faith in His shed Blood as the only way to Heaven (Ep 2:8-9). If you trust in works it’s like trusting in a steel chain of 1000 links; all of steel except one that is of paper!!
B) Faith in His ability to save- We must be persuaded He CAN save us and He WILL save us. When we stand before God in Christ we must believe that He will stand in our shoes and we will stand in His-For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Don’t be Almost Persuaded- But Lost!!
II. THE PRACTICE NEEDED And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch (Acts 11:26). Christianity is not just Believing the Gospel, It is Behaving the Gospel.
A) We Practice His Person- Christ lives in us thru the Holy Spirit. God does not rework the old man, He makes us new creatures in Christ. It is no longer my life to live but the Christ life. We Joy in doing the Father’s will as He did. We sorrow over Sin as He did.
B) We Practice His Pattern- The World takes knowledge that we have been with Christ because it sees Christ in our lives. We deny ourselves, take up our Cross, and follow God’s Plan for our lives.
The world learns of Christ as they see His light shine thru us.
C) We Practice His Purpose- As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. (John 17:18).WHAT IS HIS PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE?? We realize HIS Main Purpose is to make the Gospel available to all: This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief (1 Timothy 1:15). A Christian not interested in soul winning better check his salvation
III. THE PERSECUTION THAT COMES Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf (1 Peter 4:16). It has been truly said that God had One Son without Sin but no Sons without suffering. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake (Philippians 1:29).
There are 3 types of Suffering:
1. Natural Suffering: Result of being a person (Aches, Hunger, etc.)
2. “Earned” Suffering (See I Pet 4:15)- Result of Sin. (Example of boy Who complained about eating Peanut Butter sandwiches every day but he was the one who made them!
3. Christian Suffering: Result of being for Christ and against the World. If the world is your friend and never persecutes you then you are the enemy of God (James 4: 4) . (Example of “Christian” logger who lived in woods for a year without persecution because he didn’t tell anyone he was a Christian!).
Peter gives us 3 helps in Persecution in verses 12-14
A) The Purpose of Persecution- “Trial which is to try you”. To see if you will serve God in spite of circumstances.
B) The Partnership in Persecution- “Partakers of Christ’s sufferings”. It allows us to know the Fellowship of His Suffering (Phil 3:10) which brings us into His heart.
C) The Power to withstand Persecution- “The Spirit of Glory and of God rests on you” We can overcome because greater is he that is within us than he that is in the World (1John 4:4)
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? (1 Peter 4:17-18).
ARE YOU PERSUADED ABOUT YOUR SIN AND THE SAVIOR???
ARE YOU PRACTICING THE CHRIST LIFE????
ARE YOU SUFFERING PERSECUTION BECAUSE YOU HAVE ACCEPTED CHRIST
AND REJECTED THE WORLD???
ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN???
Acts 27:9 14 THINGS THAT LEAD MEN ASTRAY
If God spends a lot of time describing a certain thing then we know that He wants us to pay special attention to the details He gives. This account of Paul’s shipwreck shows us how men get into trouble and what happens as a result.
I. THE REASON FOR THE TROUBLES
A) Expert Opinion Believed the master of the ship more than Paul [See vs 25 as compared to vs 11]. Hast not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
EXAMPLE Peter was the “Expert fishermen” who said it was no use to fish but he obeyed God and caught a boat full. There is a way that seemeth right to man but the end thereof are the ways of death.
B) Desire for immediate comfort The haven was not commodious to winter in. Not willing to sacrifice now in order to get future reward (No wood in summer, cold in winter).
C) Popular Opinion The more part advised them. The Broad Way leads to destruction. “Everyone else is doing it!!”
D) Favorable circumstances A soft south wind blew. It is riches, goods, and pleasant circumstances that made the Laodician Christians lukewarm.
II. THE RESULTS (Any time you disobey God you get into trouble)
A) They were hit by a storm Remember Jonah and his disobedience
B) They had loss of:
1. Direction (Control) no sails, at the mercy of the storm. [God has a plan for your life. You need to get in it if you want to have Abundant Life]
2. Purpose threw out tackle, threw out cargo. Unable to do work they were supposed to do as they just tried to stay afloat.
3. Hope All hope was gone. Destruction was the only end they could see…….BUT GOD
III. THE REMEDY (God hadn’t forgotten or forsaken them)
A) Listen to God Paul had been praying and seeking God.
B) Abide in the Ship Except ye abide in Christ you can’t bring fruit. The “Life boat” may look like it’s the best but it will sink in the storm. Do it God’s way. (God many times delivers IN the storm instead of FROM it.)
C) Do Your Part Don’t expect God to eat for you. You need to get refreshment.
D) Trust God’s Work even when the ship breaks up!! God does not do things your way. HE HAS A PLAN. (By staying in the Ship until it broke up they could use the pieces of the ship to get to shore!!)
Has your sin and willful way gotten you into trouble?? You can try to fix it and make it worse and worse or you can look to the Lord and let Him show you how to handle it. HE can take your life and make something out of it If you will let Him!
Acts 27:29 4 ANCHORS IN LIFE’S STORMS
Because Men would not listen to God they had gotten themselves into trouble. A storm had tossed them and how they were in danger. They found they needed to cast out 4 anchors to hold them. As we face a new year we may find ourselves in some storms also. These 4 “anchors” will help hold us when it seems our “ship will sink”.
I. KNOW YOU’RE SAVED II Tim 1:12 For which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
A) Positive Assurance: “I Know”
1. Certainty based on the Word of God not on expert opinion: (I John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. See Jn 1:12 13)
2. Certainty based on the witness of the Spirit: The spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. (Not a “funny” feeling but an abiding joy. He will show you the sign post along the way, as you grow in the Lord. Fruit, answered prayer, Word of God explained, etc.)
B) Personal Relationship: “Whom I have believed”. Not saved because of what I do but because of Who I trust!! Not my goodness but His grace. Jesus said, I know my sheep and am known of mine (Jn 10:14)
C) Persuaded about Future: “Able to keep that which I have committed”. Not Eternal Security but Eternal Assurance. I know He will never leave me not forsake me. Job could say, “I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though after my skin worms destroy my body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.” (Job 19:25)
II. KNOW GOD LOVES YOU I John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
A) The Example of that Love: I John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
B) The Experience of that Love: Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are the called according to his purpose. When we are completely confident that God REALLY Loves us then we can rest in that love NO MATTER WHAT COMES OUR WAY!!
III. KNOW THERE IS A JUDGMENT COMING: Ecc 11:9 Rejoice, O young men; in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
A) Sinners will be “payed” for Sin
B) Righteous will be rewarded
4. KNOW HEAVEN IS REAL: II Cor 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
A) This world is not our home. The storms of life may buffet us but we have a Harbor of Refuge!!
B) Death is a gateway to Glory Heb 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast…
When you find yourself in the midst of the storm anchor yourself in: The PEACE of God (Know you’re saved), The LOVE of God (Know God Loves You), The FEAR of God (Know there is a Judgment to come), and the HOPE of God (Heaven is in the Future for Child of God).
